Cement is a powdery substance made by calcining lime and clay. When cement is mixed with water, it forms mortar, and when it is mixed with sand, gravel, and water, it makes concrete. Mortar is used as a bonding agent for plastering, masonry work, and pointing. Concrete is a mixture of aggregates and paste. The aggregates are sand and gravel or crushed stones; and the paste is made from water and portland cement mixture. Concrete is used for laying floors, roofs and constructing lintels, beams, pillars and other masonry structures. Concrete products such as pipes, blocks, bricks, and concrete articles are made using concrete. The cement and concrete products market consists of sales of cement and concrete products and related services by entities (organizations, sole traders and partnerships) that manufacture cement and concrete products such as concrete pipes, bricks, and paving blocks. The cement and concrete products manufacturing industry includes establishments engaged in manufacturing portland cement, pozzolanic cement, ready-mix concrete, concrete blocks, bricks, and pipes and related products. The global cement and concrete products market was valued at $333,255.8 million. The market accounted for 0.40% of the global GDP. In terms of per capita consumption, the market accounted for $43.5. Construction industry is the largest consumer of material resources, of both the natural ones (like stone, sand, clay, lime) and the processed and synthetic ones. Each material which is used in the construction, in one form or the other is known as construction material (engineering material). No material, existing in the universe is useless; every material has its own field of application. Stone, bricks, timber, steel, lime, cement, metals etc. are some commonly used materials by civil engineers. Selection of building material, to be used in a particular construction, is done on the basis of strength, durability, appearance and permeability. The stone which is used in the construction works, in one form or another is always obtained from the rocks. The rocks may be classified in four ways; geological classification, physical classification, chemical classification and classification based on hardness of the stone. Various king of rocks come under these classification for example; igneous rocks, plutonic rocks, sedimentary rocks, silicious rocks, stratified rocks etc. brick is the most commonly used building material which is light, easily available, uniform in shape and size and relatively cheaper except in hilly areas. Bricks are easily moulded from plastic clays, also known as brick clays or brick earth. Bricks can be moulded by any of the three methods; soft mud process, stiff mud process and semi dry process. There are various kinds of bricks; specially shaped bricks, burnt clay bricks, heavy duty bricks, sand lime bricks, sewer bricks, refractory bricks, acid resistant bricks etc. lime is an important building material, it has been used since ancient times. Lime is used as a binding material in mortar and concretes, for plastering, for manufacturing glass, for preparing lime sand bricks, soil stabilization etc. Concrete is a construction material obtained by mixing a binder (such as cement, lime, mud etc.), aggregate (sand and gravel or shingle or crushed aggregate), and water in certain proportions. Based on the binding materials, the common concretes can be classified as; mud concrete, lime concrete, cement concrete and polymer concrete. World demand for cement and concrete additives is projected to increase 8.3 percent annually in next few years. This book basically deals with rock and stone, formation of rocks, classification of rocks, geological classification, metamorphism physical classification of rocks, chemical classification, classification based upon hardness of the stone composition of stone (rock forming minerals), igneous rock forming minerals, sedimentary rock forming minerals, texture of the rocks, types of fractures of rock, uses of stone, natural bed of stone, aluminium and magnesium alloys, mechanical properties of a partially cured resin, DMA characterization, chemical advancement of a partially cured resin, differential scanning calorimeter characterization, chemical mechanical relations, moisture content as a variable, wetability and water repellency of wood, fungal and termite resistance of wood etc. The book provide wide coverage of building materials such as stone, bricks, lime, mortars, concrete, asbestos, gray iron, cast iron, steel castings, aluminium, wood, architectural paints and so many others with their applications in building construction. The book is resourceful for all professionals related to construction field, technocrats, students and libraries. The flexible use of prefabricated concrete products requires a continuously increasing diversity with regard to fresh concrete mix designs and properties, moulding processes, surface finishes and product characteristics. This trend imposes ever-higher requirements on manufacturers of the associated production equipment and on precast plants. The main goal is to implement a flexible production system in all processing stages. The relevant correlations and interactions need to be thoroughly considered and evaluated in order to ensure that concrete products and precast elements are manufactured to the required quality standard. To date, no comprehensive description of these correlations has been published in the relevant literature. This richly illustrated book closes the gap by describing the basic principles of the production processes, the fundamentals of materials, the composition of the concrete mix, and the equipment used for concrete production. Clearly arranged chapters detail the production processes and equipment used to manufacture small concrete products, concrete pipes and manholes, and precast elements. The authors have used their many years of experience in the field of precast technology and their close ties to the industry. Their aim was to integrate modern testing and calculation methods from neighbouring disciplines into precast technology. This includes, for instance, modelling and simulation of the workability behaviour of mixes, implementation of the latest advancements in machine dynamics to the design and engineering of production equipment, and the use of stateof-the-art measuring and automation technology for quality control purposes.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1906 edition. Excerpt: ... chapter xviii. qualities of concrete blocks. F1rst in importance of the qualities of concrete blocks is that freedom from cracks, deformation, and disintegration which cannot be better defined than by the comprehensive word " soundness." Whatever be the other qualities of a block, it is valueless without soundness; whatever be its defects, it is good for something if sound. It is scarcely necessary to say that a first requisite of a sound block is a sound cement. Of this matter enough has been said in the chapter on Cement. Of the quantity of cement it may be added, to what has already been stated in the chapter devoted to Proportioning and the chapter on Voids, that the cement must thoroughly coat the aggregate in order to exercise its cementitious or bonding function, which is so essential to a sound concrete block. The matter of mixing also has a direct action upon the ultimate quality, and that in the respect last mentioned. It is in the handling and curing of blocks after manufacture, however, that unsoundness is most often developed. In transferring blocks to the racks, cars, and curing-yard, latent defects and invisible cracks are developed which ultimately cause the loss of the entire block, or, if a rigid inspection of the finished product be omitted, may result in failure of the member in time of need. It should be remembered that a crack in a freshly made block never heals, but rather tends to extend through the block. Hence too much care of green blocks cannot be exercised, and the slightest defect should cause the block to be immediately returned to the mixing-platform, or, if the cement has already set, it should go to the scrap-pile. In curing, lack of uniform conditions of moisture and shade, as well as air-drafts, are...

The environmental aspects involved in the production and use of cement, concrete and other building materials are of growing importance. CO2 emissions are 0.8-1.3 ton/ton of cement production in dry process. SO2 emission is also very high, but is dependent upon the type of fuel used. Energy consumption is also very high at 100-150 KWT/ton of cement produced. It is costly to erect new cement plants. Substitution of waste materials will conserve dwindling resources, and will avoid the environmental and ecological damages caused by quarrying and exploitation of the raw materials for making cement. To some extent, it will help to solve the problem otherwise encountered in disposing of the wastes. Partial replacement of clinker or portland cement by slag, fly ash, silica fume and natural rock minerals illustrates these aspects. Partial replacement by natural materials that require little or no processing, such as pozzolans, calcined clays, etc., saves energy and decreases emission of gases. The output of waste materials suitable as cement replacement (slags, fly ashes, silica fumes, rice husk ash, etc.) is more than double that of cement production. These waste materials can partly be used, or processed, to produce materials suitable as aggregates or fillers in concrete. These can also be used as clinker raw materials, or processed into cementing systems. New grinding and mixing technology will make the use of these secondary materials simpler. Developments in chemical admixtures: superplasticizers, air entraining agents, etc., help in controlling production techniques and, in achieving the desired properties in concrete. Use of waste products is not only a partial solution to environmental and ecological problems; it significantly improves the microstructure, and consequently the durability properties of concrete, which are difficult to achieve by the use of pure portland cement. The aim is not only to make the cements and concrete less expensive, but to provide a blend of tailored properties of waste materials and portland cements suitable for specified purpose. This requires a better understanding of chemistry, and materials science. There is an increasing demand for better understanding of material properties, as well as better control of the microstructure developing in the construction material, to increase durability. The combination of different binders and modifiers to produce cheaper and more durable building materials will solve to some extent the ecological and environmental problems.
