Over time his works have influenced such major creative forces as the French poets Charles Baudelaire and Andre Gide, filmmaker D.W. Griffith and modern literary legend Allen Ginsberg. Best known for his poems and short fiction, Poe perfected the psychological thriller, invented the detective story, and rarely missed transporting the reader to his own supernatural realm. He has also been hailed posthumously as one of the finest literary critics of the nineteenth century. In Complete Poems And Tales by Edgar Allan Poe fans may indulge in all of Poe's most imaginative short-stories, including The Fall of the House of Usher, The Murders in Rue Morgue, The Tell-Tale Heart, Ligeia and Ms. In a Bottle. This book is carefully illustrated by the famous illustrator and cartoonist William Heath Robinson. William Heath Robinson (1872-1944) is an artist whose work, whether in his well known humorous drawings or his illustrations for Kipling, Shakespeare or children's stories, is integral to British cultural heritage. Famous for his horror stories and brooding poetry, Poe is often considered to be the inventor of the modern detective story, as well. Now, this one marvelously illustrated and popularly priced volume makes it possible to appreciate the full genius of this master of the mysterious and brilliant literary talent. Images, reproduced from a variety of sources (including Aubrey Beardsley, Edouard Manet, and Arthur Rackham) enhance the mood of such favorites as The Pit and the Pendulum, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Cask of Amontillado, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Purloined Letter, A Descent into the Maelström and The Masque of the Red Death. In addition to those "Tales of Mystery and Imagination"--70 chronicles of terror and fantasy that established Poe as the supreme craftsman of the short story--there is The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, Poe's only full-length work and a masterful blending of science and romance. Finally, a section devoted to "The Raven and Other Poems" reflects Poe's obsession with the macabre.

The Complete Poems of Edgar Allan Poe Illustrated and Decorated by W. Heath Robinson About this Edition 71 Poems including; Silence (1839) The Haunted Palace (1839) Eulalie (1843) Lenore (1843) The Conqueror Worm (1843) Lines on Joe Locke (1843) Dream-Land (1844) Epigram for Wall Street (1845) Impromptu. To Kate Carol (1845) The Divine Right of Kings (1845) The Raven (1845) This work is a completely new edition of Poe's poems. Unlike previous editions, the poems are presented in chronological order. A short note, derived from Wikipedia, has been added to each poem. Following the poems are three essays written by Poe on the subject of Poetry and composition. This edition also incorporates the illustrations and ornaments by W. Heath Robinson from "The Poems of Edgar Allan Poe", published by George Bell in 1900. This is not, however, intended as a facsimile of that edition. This is a completely new edition. Believing only a portion of my former volume to be worthy a second edition -- that small portion I thought it as well to include in the present book as to republish by itself. I have, therefore, herein combined Al Aaraaf and Tamerlane with other Poems hitherto unprinted. Nor have I hesitated to insert from the "Minor Poems," now omitted, whole lines, and even passages, to the end that being placed in a fairer light, and the trash shaken from them in which they were imbedded, they may have some chance of being seen by posterity. It has been said, that a good critique on a poem may be written by one who is no poet himself. This, according to your idea and mine of poetry, I feel to be false -- the less poetical the critic, the less just the critique, and the converse. On this account, and because there are but few B----s in the world, I would be as much ashamed of the world's good opinion as proud of your own. Another than yourself might here observe "Shakspeare is in possession of the world's good opinion, and yet Shakspeare is the greatest of poets.

Original Illustrated Collector's Edition. The Complete Poems of Edgar Allan Poe. Illustrated and Decorated by W. Heath Robinson. Edgar Allan Poe (born Edgar Poe; January 19, 1809 – October 7, 1849) was an American author, poet, editor, and literary critic, considered part of the American Romantic Movement. Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, Poe was one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story, and is generally considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre. He is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career. Born in Boston, he was the second child of two actors. His father abandoned the family in 1810, and his mother died the following year. Thus orphaned, the child was taken in by John and Frances Allan, of Richmond, Virginia. Although they never formally adopted him, Poe was with them well into young adulthood. Tension developed later as John Allan and Edgar repeatedly clashed over debts, including those incurred by gambling, and the cost of secondary education for the young man. Poe attended the University of Virginia for one semester but left due to lack of money. Poe quarreled with Allan over the funds for his education and enlisted in the Army in 1827 under an assumed name. It was at this time his publishing career began, albeit humbly, with an anonymous collection of poems, Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827), credited only to "a Bostonian". With the death of Frances Allan in 1829, Poe and Allan reached a temporary rapprochement. Later failing as an officer's cadet at West Point and declaring a firm wish to be a poet and writer, Poe parted ways with John Allan.
