Der Autor verschränkt drei, für die Geschichte der Kompositionstheorie bedeutende Themenkreise: die Musiktheorie Jean-Philippe Rameaus, die Theorie der Oktavregel in der Lesart von Johann David Heinichen sowie »jene deutsche musiktheoretische Tradition, auf die Rameaus basse fondamentale traf und von der sie rezipiert wurde«. Dabei stellt er Rameaus Musiktheorie stärker in ihrem historischen Wandel dar, als es bisher üblich war. Nur so lässt sich verstehen, wie sie von der deutschen Musiktheorie rezipiert wurde. Mit Heinichens Theorie der Oktavregel widmet er sich einem bedeutenden alternativen Versuch zu Rameaus basse fondamentale, harmonische Prozessualität systematisch zu erklären. Zur deutschen musiktheoretischen Tradition, auf welche die Theorie Rameaus stieß, gehört auch ein bislang nicht angemessen gewürdigter Autor: Georg Andreas Sorge. Sorges Akkordlehre steht derjenigen Rameaus an Komplexität und Ausdifferenzierung in nichts nach, und bei Sorge tritt zum ersten Mal die sogenannte Stufentheorie in Erscheinung. Der Autor gelangt schließlich zu der These, dass Rameaus Einfluss auf den deutschsprachigen musiktheoretischen Diskurs geringer und vor allem weniger konsistent war als bislang angenommen. Mit ihrem historischen Weitblick, ihren prägnanten Thesen und überraschenden Entdeckungen erscheint Holtmeiers Schrift Rameaus langer Schatten als überaus anregende Arbeit. The author interweaves three significant thematic areas in the history of compositional theory: Jean-Philippe Rameau’s musical theory, the rule of the octave in Johann David Heinichen’s interpretation, and “the German tradition of music theory which was affected by and adopted Rameau’s basse fondamentale.” The author finally arrives at the thesis that Rameau’s influence on the discourse of musical theory in the German-speaking world was smaller and less consistent than previously assumed. With its broad historical perspective, incisive propositions and surprising discoveries, Holtmeier’s study of ‘Rameau’s long shadow’ is an extremely stimulating work.
