Dio Chrysostom (surname literally means "golden-mouthed") was part of the Second Sophistic school of Greek philosophers which reached its peak in the early 2nd century. He was considered one of the most eminent of the Greek rhetoricians and sophists by the ancients who wrote about him, such as Philostratus, Synesius, and Photius. Eighty of his Discourses are extant, as well as a few Letters and a funny mock essay "In Praise of Hair", as well as a few other fragments. These orations appear to be written versions of his oral teaching, and are like essays on political, moral, and philosophical subjects. Discourses Encomium on hair Fragments

Julian was Roman emperor from 361 to 363, as well as a notable philosopher and author. His promotion of Neoplatonic Hellenism in its place, caused him to be remembered as Julian the Apostate in Christian tradition. Julian wrote several works in Greek, some of which have come down to us. One of the most important of his lost works is his Against the Galileans, intended to refute the Christian religion. The only parts of this work which survive are those excerpted by Cyril of Alexandria, who gives extracts from the three first books in his refutation of Julian, Contra Julianum. A man of unusually complex character, Julian the Apostate was a military commander, philosopher, social reformer and man of letters. He was the last non-Christian ruler of the Roman Empire and it was his wish to bring the Empire back to its ancient Roman values in order to save it from ‘dissolution’. He purged the top-heavy state bureaucracy and attempted to revive traditional Roman religious practices at the expense of Christianity. Philostratus the Athenian was a third century AD sophist, who settled in Rome as a member of the learned circle of the Empress Julia Domna. His celebrated ‘Life of Apollonius of Tyana’ is by far the longest biography to survive from classical times and it became one of the most widely discussed literary works of later antiquity. It employs an engaging style that brings to life its charismatic subject — a teacher and religious reformer that travels across the known world, from the Atlantic to the Ganges. His miracles, which include extraordinary cures and inexplicable disappearances, blended with his apparent triumph over death, resulted in many pagans regarding Apollonius as a rival to Jesus of Nazareth. Delphi’s Ancient Classics series provides eReaders with the wisdom of the Classical world, with both English translations and the original Greek texts. This eBook presents Philostratus’ collected works, with illustrations and the usual Delphi bonus material. (Version 1) * Beautifully illustrated with images relating to Philostratus’ life and works * Features the collected works of Philostratus, in both English translation and the original Greek * Concise introductions to the works * Includes translations previously appearing in the Loeb Classical Library editions of Philostratus * Excellent formatting of the texts * Easily locate the sections you want to read with individual contents tables * Includes Philostratus’ rare letters, first time in digital print * Also includes the two ‘Imagines’ by Philostratus’ relatives, Philostratus of Lemnos, and Philostratus the Younger * Provides a special dual English and Greek text, allowing readers to compare the sections paragraph by paragraph — ideal for students * Features a bonus biography — discover Philostratus’ ancient world * Ordering of texts into chronological order and literary genres Please note: there are no translations available in the public domain of 'Gymnasticus' and 'Heroicus' and so they cannot appear in this edition. The Use Of Sacred Books In The Ancient World written by Leonard Victor Rutgers and has been published by Peeters Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with History categories.

In this volume a number of scholars from Israel, the USA, and England have joined forces with the well-known Utrecht University Research Unit "The Cultural Milieu of Early Christianity" to investigate in an unprecendently interdisciplinary fashion how sacred books functioned in pagan, Jewish, and Christian circles. The 16 essays cover a wide range of topics including a discussion of emergence of canonical scriptures in late antiquity, an investigation of parallels between exegesis of Homer by the Greeks and that of the Bible by the Jews, a study of the rise of Virgil's Aeneid to the status of "canonical" book; a discussion of the use of sacred books as instant oracles; an investigation of the role of the Bible in polemics between Jews and Christians; an analysis of the wide variety of quotation formula's used by New Testament authors, a discussion of the role of biblical interpretation in the thought world of Jesus' brother, James; an investigation of the function of Scripture in the midrash Aggadat Bereshit, and other topics.
