Humans may be the most important beings on the planet, but they are also the most complex. This statement is true in more ways than one, humans are not the only living things on earth, but they are on top of the food chain because they embody intellectual prowess higher than other living things. As a human being, you think beyond eating and sleeping; you are always overwhelmed by so many other issues that must be dealt with daily, for you to experience the best out of life. However, dealing with these issues doesn't mean you get to escape the "complex" idea of your humanity. If you are going to deal with complexities all your life, the best thing you can do is understand them, and see how you can make the most out of the situation. The objective of this book is to share some of the most factual aspects of human complexity, so you are equipped with information that will help you live your best life now and understand your surroundings. We live in a world that is filled with diversity in many aspects, and these are the basic centre point of human nature. There is so much to learn on the issue of complexity, in fact, you will be amazed at the depths we will unravel, but I promise it will be fun all the way. "Humans had always been a complex mystery".

This book provides an innovative interdisciplinary approach to understanding the principles of human thinking and offers techniques concerning the solution of abstract problems and predictions based on those principles. Utilizing the concepts of complexity science, the book explains the emergence and structural elements of cognitive models underlying such diverse human behaviors as abstract thought, kindness, and selfishness. Such cognitive models allow humans to react to their present environments and make accurate and useful predictions of their futures. Those who might find this book of interest are primarily academics or professionals interested in a unique and interdisciplinary approach to cognition based on complexity science. The book may also be utilized as a supplemental class text in programs on complexity science, life science, and cognition.

This book provides the first systematic assessment from a human rights law perspective of the landmark contributions of the renowned legal anthropologist, Sally Engle Merry. What impact does over-simplification have on human rights debates? The understandable tendency to present them as a single, universal, and immutable concept ignores their complexity and by extension only serves to weaken them. Merry and her colleagues transformed human rights thinking by highlighting the process of 'vernacularization', which sees rights discourse as being unavoidably dependent upon translation and interpretation. She also warned of the pitfalls of excessive reliance upon statistical and other indicators, through the process of quantification. Here the leading voices in the field assess the significance of these contributions.

Human Current, the complexity podcast, emerged from the belief that the world will be a better place if more people learn about complexity-as a scientific theory and way of understanding the world. Our Human Current is a story of listening and learning, and of the power of mentorship, inspired by our own mentor, Douglas Drane. We conducted more than 125 thoughtful interviews with scientists, influencers, and practitioners in the fields of complexity science and systems thinking. Let us take you on a 365-day journey through the stories, research, anecdotes, and advice from Doug and our conversations with guests including: Stephen Wolfram, a founding father of complexity science; Yaneer Bar-Yam, president of the New England Complex Systems Institute; Jean Boulton, co-author of Embracing Complexity; Melanie Mitchell, professor at the Santa Fe Institute; Margaret Wheatley, best-selling author; Dean Radin, chief scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences; Albert-László Barabási, author; and so many more!

The sequencing of the human genome has brought human genetics into a new era of study resulting in the generation of an explosive amount of information. Application of genomic, proteomic, and bioinformatics technologies to the study of human genetics has made it possible for human genetic diseases to be studied on an unprecedented scale, both in silico and in the wet lab. This volume provides up-to-date coverage of the broad range of research topics in this fascinating area. In the first part of the book, a whole spectrum of approaches to human genetics research is reviewed for both background and the latest progress. In the second, important topics related to genetic research of various complex human diseases are discussed. The robust content and diverse array of subjects allow the book to serve as both a concise “encyclopedia” that introduces basic and essential concepts of human genetics and an in-depth review of the current understanding of genetic research in human diseases.

Despite its increasing importance, the verification and validation of the human-machine interface is perhaps the most overlooked aspect of system development. Although much has been written about the design and developmentprocess, very little organized information is available on how to verifyand validate highly complex and highly coupled dynamic systems. Inability toevaluate such systems adequately may become the limiting factor in our ability to employ systems that our technology and knowledge allow us to design. This volume, based on a NATO Advanced Science Institute held in 1992, is designed to provide guidance for the verification and validation of all highly complex and coupled systems. Air traffic control isused an an example to ensure that the theory is described in terms that will allow its implementation, but the results can be applied to all complex and coupled systems. The volume presents the knowledge and theory ina format that will allow readers from a wide variety of backgrounds to apply it to the systems for which they are responsible. The emphasis is on domains where significant advances have been made in the methods of identifying potential problems and in new testing methods and tools. Also emphasized are techniques to identify the assumptions on which a system is built and to spot their weaknesses.

Learning from Demonstration (LfD) explores techniques for learning a task policy from examples provided by a human teacher. The field of LfD has grown into an extensive body of literature over the past 30 years, with a wide variety of approaches for encoding human demonstrations and modeling skills and tasks. Additionally, we have recently seen a focus on gathering data from non-expert human teachers (i.e., domain experts but not robotics experts). In this book, we provide an introduction to the field with a focus on the unique technical challenges associated with designing robots that learn from naive human teachers. We begin, in the introduction, with a unification of the various terminology seen in the literature as well as an outline of the design choices one has in designing an LfD system. Chapter 2 gives a brief survey of the psychology literature that provides insights from human social learning that are relevant to designing robotic social learners. Chapter 3 walks through an LfD interaction, surveying the design choices one makes and state of the art approaches in prior work. First, is the choice of input, how the human teacher interacts with the robot to provide demonstrations. Next, is the choice of modeling technique. Currently, there is a dichotomy in the field between approaches that model low-level motor skills and those that model high-level tasks composed of primitive actions. We devote a chapter to each of these. Chapter 7 is devoted to interactive and active learning approaches that allow the robot to refine an existing task model. And finally, Chapter 8 provides best practices for evaluation of LfD systems, with a focus on how to approach experiments with human subjects in this domain.

Geoff Boyce offers an exploration of one of the urgent challenges of our time, how are we all going to get along together despite our differences? He develops an insight by Henri Nouwen, 'the creation of free space for the other', applying this concept to the personal, interpersonal and organisational. He draws on personal insights and experiences, and the contributions of scholars and public figures.
