The Complicit Text: Failures of Witnessing in Postwar Fiction identifies the causes of complicity in the face of unfolding atrocities by examining the works of Albert Camus, Milan Kunera, Kazuo Ishiguro, W. G. Sebald, Thomas Pynchon, and Margaret Atwood. Ivan Stacy argues that complicity often stems from narrative failures to bear witness to wrongdoing. However, literary fiction, he contends, can at once embody and examine forms of complicity on three different levels: as a theme within literary texts, as a narrative form, and also as it implicates readers themselves through empathetic engagement with the text. Furthermore, Stacy questions what forms of non-complicit action are possible and explores the potential for productive forms of compromise. Stacy discusses both individual dilemmas of complicity in the shadow of World War II and collective complicity in the context of contemporary concerns, such as the hegemony of neoliberalism and the climate emergency.

This book explores the concept of complicity with regard to the politics of representation. Over the past decades,complicity critique has evolved and become integral to literary and cultural studies. Perpetration and Complicity under Nazism and Beyond analyses perpetration and complicity under National Socialism and beyond. Using the notion of 'compromised identities' to think about contentious questions relating to empathy and complicity, this inter-disciplinary collection addresses the complex relationships between people's behaviours and self-understandings through and beyond periods of collective violence. Contributors explore the compromises that individuals, states and societies enter into both during and after such violence. Ann Kaplan considers how the mother appears in three related spheres: the historical, in which she charts changing representations of the mother from 1830 to the postmodernist present; the psychoanalytic, which discusses theories of the mother from Freud to Lacan and the French Feminists; and the mother as she is figured in cultural representations: in literary and film texts such as East Lynne, Marnie and the The Handmaid's Tale, as well as in journalism and popular manuals on motherhood. Kaplan's analysis identifies two dominant paradigms of the mother as `Angel' and `Witch', and charts the contesting and often contradictory discourses of the mother in present-day America.

Complicity in American Literature after 1945 offers a literary and intellectual history of the idea of complicity in the United States, proposing a new frame for understanding American literature in the period. The term “complicity” derives etymologically from the Latin complicãre, which means “to fold.” If one is complicit, one is folded into a larger system of social harm over which one has little or no direct control. In the period from 1945 to the early 1970s, complicity with structural racism became a central concern for American writing and thought, as it grappled with the Holocaust, colonialism, the Vietnam War, and racial domination at home in the United States. Writers and thinkers grasped complicity both as a social phenomenon to be represented and as a problem threatening to enfold writing itself. In addressing complicity, intellectuals were obliged to reconsider their social role and to innovate means of literary expression capable of articulating new experiences of guilt and responsibility. Complicity in American Literature after 1945 tells the story of that process as it took place across several genres, from highbrow short stories to crime fiction, and from experimental metafiction to the reportage essays of the New Journalism. It argues that the history of racial complicity is inseparable from the history of liberalism, and shows how we can make sense of our present preoccupations with complicity by studying its origins in the past.
