This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1912 edition. Excerpt: ...volitional Spirit of the central power. Man is sent to the "lilies" to-learn, since their perfect concurrence in gravitational law is superior to lawless reason. The embryo is awakened by the sun's attracting power, but there is in the bosom of the little seed that which is superior to sun, moon, and stars; superior we say, but not independent of, since life rejoices in and feeds upon all that ministers to its abundance, and is itself life in a lower stage of progression. If one thing could be more wonderful than another it would be the infinite variety of equilibria and swiftness of motion--" the speed of ether particles," Le Bon tells us, "is 300,000 times greater than that of a cannon ball"--of the ether particles charged with power that compose the constituent atoms of the embodiment in which every positive entity clothes itself. We know that this variety of equilibria or impact and compact of the positive and negative elements, initiative from the spirit of the central power and response, makes the infinite variety of substances, physical, mental, and psychical. WE KNOW, TOO, THAT ETHER IS THE MEDIUM OF CAUSAL LAW; IN ITS INFINITELY FINE PULSATIONS IT CARRIES SENSIBLE CONTROL AS AIR CONVEYS THE AUDIBLE COMMAND OF A MASTER. In man there are three distinct varieties of equilibria, and of consequent impact and compact of the electronic systems, and so closely are they related and correlated that the body reveals the mind, and the activities of both body and mind reveal the spirit of the man. The individual which these, soul, body, and mind constitute, is an aggregation of gravitational energy; that energy manifests itself in three ways. The positive element spirit organizes or creates, and...

Excerpt from The Composition of Matter and the Evolution of Mind: Immortality a Scientific Certainty This little book is not a philosophical speculation, nor is it a theory. It is a brief statement of fundamental facts corroborated by every development of Science. It presents the structural unity of the Design and the relations and inter-relations of the Infinite diversity of its manifestations in their common relationship to and dependence upon the Central Power, the Source; especially its aim is to make plain the cause of evolutionary transformations that culminated in the mind of man, which was, and is, capable of aspiration for renewal, "dominion," and, individually of progress and immortality. Sir James Crichton Browne, the English specialist, has said of physicians: "Whatever theoretical tenets they may embrace, whatever physiological system they may adopt, they will, when they find themselves medical practitioners at the bedside, become ardent vitalists." Vitalists are those who see in life more than can be accounted for on any known physical basis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Evolving The Mind written by A. Graham Cairns-Smith and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-04-02 with Philosophy categories.

Evolving the Mind has two main themes: how ideas about the mind evolved in science; and how the mind itself evolved in nature. The mind came into physical science when it was realised, first, that it is the activity of a physical object, a brain, which makes a mind; and secondly, that our theories of nature are largely mental constructions, artificial extensions of an inner model of the world which we inherited from our distant ancestors. From both of these perspectives, consciousness is the great enigma. If consciousness evolved, however, it is in some sense a material thing whatever else may be said of it. Physics, chemistry, molecular biology, brain function and evolutionary biology - almost the whole of science - is involved, and there can be no expert in all these fields. So the style of the book is simple, almost conversational. The excitement is that we seem to be close to a scientific theory of consciousness.

Excerpt from Creation; Or the Power Behind Evolution: Disclosing the Unity of Matter and Force The book that is herewith placed in your hands "was not made but grew." It has come into its place as an unexpected visitant, to author as well as to reader, and the only apology for its appearance is that it could not be kept back because of an impulse in the mind of the author urging to self assertion. The voice of truth coming to his own mind with unlooked for messages, and guiding his mind in new paths of thought, said "Write," and he has written. At first a single lecture was prepared, but this only served to make others necessary, and so the body of the work was written. This will account for the peculiar style of composition, for some repetitions of thoughts and of quotations from authors. As he pressed lines of thought into unexplored fields it seemed necessary that he should reach ultimates of thought by several different paths - that he should strive to make his positions fully understood by giving "line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little." Great care has been taken to allow advanced thinkers and experimenters in science to give expression to their latest discoveries, and it was desired that no important facts should be excluded from the list of experimental truths. How Matter Becomes Conscious written by Jan Faye and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-04-11 with Science categories.

This innovative book proposes a unique and original perspective on the nature of the mind and how phenomenal consciousness may arise in a physical world. From simple sentient organisms to complex self-reflective systems, Faye argues for a naturalistic-evolutionary approach to philosophy of mind and consciousness. Drawing on substantial literature in evolutionary biology and cognitive science, this book offers a promising alternative to the major theories of the mind-body problem: the quality of our experiences should not, as some philosophers have claimed, be associated with subjectivity that is not open for scientific explanation, nor should it be associated with intrinsic properties of the brain. Instead, Faye argues that mental properties are extrinsic properties of the brain caused by the organism’s interaction with its environment. Taking on the explanatory gap, and rejecting the ontological pluralism of present naturalist theories of the mind, Faye thus proposes a unified view of reality in which it is possible to explain qualitative mental presentations as part of the physical world.
