A wargame, at its heart, is a conflict simulation model. Sometimes these conflicts are historical (Twilight Struggle, COIN series, Washington's War) and sometimes they are fictional (War of the Ring, Space Empires 4x). A great wargame will find the right level of abstraction where the conflict is accurately modeled, but rules overhead doesn't render the game unplayable. Sometimes wargames have a reputation of being long and overly complex. Extra rules that add flavor are often called "chrome." Chrome is usually added to model specific aspects of a unit, interactions with the terrain, etc. We'll discuss this issue and the most efficient way to digest rulesets in this book

George Gush is a key contributor to the development of early wargaming. His WRG rules for 1400-1700 were the standard rules in wargaming for that period for many years. This book, first published in 1980, is a lesser known classic from that period. The book traces the history of the wargame, relating the professional development of kriegsspiel to the emerging hobby. Then it includes an interesting discussion of the main issues around developing wargaming rules for table top battles. The section of periods and types of games is fairly comprehensive guide to the state of the hobby by 1980. The book includes three sets of complete rules. Wargame rules for the later nineteenth century 20th Century Skirmish rules Medieval wargaming rules The History of Wargaming Project aims to document the development of wargaming; hobby, professional and the application of wargaming to serious games.

The wargaming rules in this book have been designed by the well-known military historian, Paddy Griffith, and combine simplicity with fun and speed. No less than seven types of wargame are explained: the traditional skirmish and Divisional games, the brigade game and army level game, which all involve the use of model soldiers in battles of varying scales; the generalship game, which is concerned with how a general on campaign divides his time; and finally, a map kriegsspiel and a tactical exerise without troops.

The Craft of Wargaming is designed to support supervisors, planners, and analysts who use wargames to support their organizations' missions. The authors focus on providing analysts and planners with a clear methodology that allows them to initiate, design, develop, conduct and analyze wargames. Although the methodology is built around the analytic wargaming construct, organizations or individuals can easily adapt this methodology to construct educational and experiential wargames. The book breaks the wargame creation process into five distinct phases: Initiate, Design, Develop, Conduct, and Analyze. For each phase, the book discusses the key tasks that a wargaming team must address if it is to have a reasonable chance at designing, developing, conducting, and analyzing a successful wargame. While these five phases are critical in the process of constructing any wargame, it should be understood that wargaming is a craft that is learned through active participation, not by reading or watching. The craft of wargaming must be practiced as part of the learning process and the included practical exercises provide an opportunity to experience the construction of an analytical wargame.

These comparative studies focus on the relationship between war and games in an effort to achieve an understanding of the phenomenon of war, in order ultimately to avoid it. Out of the ten studies on war and games in this volume, the first five are historical, the next two are by anthropologists, and the last three concern modern war games. The purpose of this comparative study is to focus on the relationship between war and games by highlighting their differences and similarities in an effort better to understand the phenomenon of war. Americans and Europeans contribute studies on war and games in ancient Greece, the lack ofmilitary games in Byzantium, jousts in the middle ages, 'flower wars' and the Aztec and Maya ball game, games in pre-industrial societies and their relation to war, and aspects of computer and video games.
