Originally published in 1982, The Concept of Class provides a concise and stimulating guide to the historical development of the concept of ‘class’ and the different ways in which it has been applied in social and political theory. The author begins by determining where and how the word acquired its political sense, and after a short re-examination of its classical background, moves on to consider Marx’s reformulation of the concept and his proposals for making it a fundamental term in the study of society. He traces the different strands of Marxist and non-Marxist use of the term right up to the twentieth century, considers the confusion of ideas that had resulted at the time, and analyses the utility of ‘class’ in assessing the nature of contemporary socialist states and post-industrial capitalist societies. In conclusion, Dr Calvert suggests that class is an ‘essentially contested concept’ – that is, a concept on which agreement is by its nature impossible. Today it can be read in its historical context.

Class And Social Background Discrimination In The Modern Workplace written by Angelo Capuano and has been published by Policy Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-07-15 with Business & Economics categories.

This book exposes how inequalities based on class and social background arise from employment practices in the digital age. It considers instances where social media is used in recruitment to infiltrate private lives and hide job advertisements based on locality; where algorithms assess socio-economic data to filter candidates; where human interviewers are replaced by artificial intelligence with design that disadvantages users of classed language; and where already vulnerable groups become victims of digitalisation and remote work. The author examines whether these practices create risks of discrimination based on certain protected attributes, including ‘social origin’ in international labour law and laws in Australia and South Africa, ‘social condition’ and ‘family status’ in laws within Canada, and others. The book proposes essential law reform and improvements to workplace policy.

This volume contains the papers presented at the 12th Annual Conference on Algorithmic Learning Theory (ALT 2001), which was held in Washington DC, USA, during November 25–28, 2001. The main objective of the conference is to provide an inter-disciplinary forum for the discussion of theoretical foundations of machine learning, as well as their relevance to practical applications. The conference was co-located with the Fourth International Conference on Discovery Science (DS 2001). The volume includes 21 contributed papers. These papers were selected by the program committee from 42 submissions based on clarity, signi?cance, o- ginality, and relevance to theory and practice of machine learning. Additionally, the volume contains the invited talks of ALT 2001 presented by Dana Angluin of Yale University, USA, Paul R. Cohen of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, USA, and the joint invited talk for ALT 2001 and DS 2001 presented by Setsuo Arikawa of Kyushu University, Japan. Furthermore, this volume includes abstracts of the invited talks for DS 2001 presented by Lindley Darden and Ben Shneiderman both of the University of Maryland at College Park, USA. The complete versions of these papers are published in the DS 2001 proceedings (Lecture Notes in Arti?cial Intelligence Vol. 2226).

Computational Learning Theory presents the theoretical issues in machine learning and computational models of learning. This book covers a wide range of problems in concept learning, inductive inference, and pattern recognition. Organized into three parts encompassing 32 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the inductive principle based on weak convergence of probability measures. This text then examines the framework for constructing learning algorithms. Other chapters consider the formal theory of learning, which is learning in the sense of improving computational efficiency as opposed to concept learning. This book discusses as well the informed parsimonious (IP) inference that generalizes the compatibility and weighted parsimony techniques, which are most commonly applied in biology. The final chapter deals with the construction of prediction algorithms in a situation in which a learner faces a sequence of trials, with a prediction to be given in each and the goal of the learner is to make some mistakes. This book is a valuable resource for students and teachers.

These proceedings are a record of the Multiple Classi?er Systems Workshop, MCS 2009, held at the University of Iceland, Reykjavik, Iceland in June 2009. Being the eighth in a well-established series of meetings providing an inter- tional forum for the discussion of issues in multiple classi?er system design, the workshop achieved its objective of bringing together researchers from diverse communities (neural networks, pattern recognition, machine learning and stat- tics) concerned with this research topic. From more than 70 submissions, the Program Committee selected 54 papers to create an interesting scienti?c program. The special focus of MCS 2009 was on the application of multiple classi?er systems in remote sensing. This part- ular application uses multiple classi?ers for raw data fusion, feature level fusion and decision level fusion. In addition to the excellent regular submission in the technical program, outstanding contributions were made by invited speakers Melba Crawford from Purdue University and Zhi-Hua Zhou of Nanjing Univ- sity. Papers of these talks are included in these workshop proceedings. With the workshop’sapplicationfocusbeingonremotesensing,Prof.Crawford’sexpertise in the use of multiple classi?cation systems in this context made the discussions on this topic at MCS 2009 particularly fruitful.
