This textbook gives a wide-ranging, research-informed introduction to issues in lifelong learning across a variety of educational settings and practices. Its very accessible approach is multi-disciplinary drawing on sociology and psychology in particular. In addition, issues are discussed within an international context. While there has been a proliferation of texts focussing on particular areas of practice such as higher education, there is little in the way of a broad overview. Chapters one to four introduce various conceptions of lifelong learning, the factors that impinge on learning through the life course, and the social and the economic rationale for lifelong learning. Chapters five-ten consider the varied sites of lifelong learning, from the micro to macro (from the home to the region to the virtual). Chapter eleven draws the strands together in the context of turbulence and continuing transition in personal and work roles, and against the background of future technological development. This timely overview will be relevant to education and training professionals, education studies students and the general reader.

The A to Z of Lifelong Learning has been written for anyone involved in the lifelong learning sector, whether as an evening class tutor, trainee FE teacher or college manager. With its glossary format, this book allows students, tutors and practitioners to easily explore the many key themes, issues and debates that shape contemporary practice in the lifelong learning sector. Written in an accessible style the A to Z of Lifelong Learning combines ease of use with a critical perspective, covering a range of important topics relating to learning and teaching in lifelong learning, the people (staff, students and other stakeholders) and the organisation and management of the sector. Each entry provides a succinct and helpful overview for busy students and practitioners, and includes: Introduction: A brief definition of the term, including changes in emphasis/usage over time. Key concepts: An exploration of key concepts and debates within the topic, referenced to both recent literature and seminal works/writers. Practical application: Commentary relating to the application/manifestation of the concept in practice, drawing on real world examples where appropriate. Readable, critical and fully referenced to provide guidelines for further reading and research, the book is aimed at students who are taking a wide variety of lifelong learning qualifications. "This book is an excellent entry point for anyone who wants to know more about lifelong learning and the lifelong learning sector. Each entry provides a clear definition and an introduction to the topic with an overview of the key elements. This is followed by a concise critical review highlighting the key theorists and writers. Each section concludes with a comprehensive guide to further reading. Jonathan Tummons and Ewan Ingleby combine scholarship and experience of the sector with the outcomes of their own research to create a valuable addition to the literature on lifelong learning. If you are unfamiliar with the territory of lifelong learning, this book gives you the map." Pete Scales, Senior Lecturer in Education, University of Derby, UK "In their introduction, Tummons and Ingleby describe the breadth and complexity of the lifelong learning sector with its wide range of educational institutions, programmes of study, contexts and settings and diverse student and teacher populations. That it manages so comprehensively to encompass this sector, from 'Accreditation of Prior Learning' to 'Zone of Proximal Development', is one of the key achievements of this text. Each entry is economically written but any necessary brevity does not prevent the writers from dealing with topics in a critical and scholarly fashion and entries are usefully accompanied by references and further reading. The indices of most textbooks concerned with the sector will usually indicate where, through the text, individual topics are dealt with. A strong feature of A-Z of Lifelong Learning is that readers can go directly to topics which interest them for a clear, comprehensive treatment of them. This text will be invaluable to all those teaching or studying in the sector and will be particularly useful for those outside the sector baffled by the myriad topics, theories, policies, processes which are current within it - indeed, there is even an entry on 'Jargon'!" Andrew Armitage, Head of the Department of Post-Compulsory Education, Canterbury Christ Church University, UK "This is a welcome and timely text. Lifelong learning is characterised by continual revision and radical diversity. This simple A-Z of the sector provides a much needed overview of that complexity. For the novice unfamiliar with the pedagogies, philosophies and policies that define working with adults, this A-Z of Lifelong Learning is an accessible introduction. The seasoned professional familiar with a particular institutional setting will appreciate gaining depth and insight into the workings of an entirely different educational context. Those working in a further education college may know little and understand less about the distinctiveness of the Workers' Educational Association. Each alphabetically listed entry is sharply focussed and accessibly written. The writers somehow manage to stay true to the criticality and contention desired by those seeking depth. They do more than provide factual information; the reader is gently guided through the broad arguments surrounding that particular entry - audit, Ofsted and part-time tutors are three good examples of how contestation is introduced: there is enough here to appreciate the significance of the concept but too little to completely satisfy. The reader is left curious and inspired, wanting to follow up and find out more. Yet, each entry provides just enough detail to stimulate thought and discussion." Carol Azumah Dennis, PCET Programme Director, University of Hull, UK

Whether it is earning a GED, a particular skill, or technical topic for a career, taking classes of interest, or even returning to begin a degree program or completing it, adult learning encompasses those beyond the traditional university age seeking out education. This type of education could be considered non-traditional as it goes beyond the typical educational path and develops learners that are self-initiated and focused on personal development in the form of gaining some sort of education. Essentially, it is a voluntary choice of learning throughout life for personal and professional development. While there is often a large focus towards K-12 and higher education, it is important that research also focuses on the developing trends, technologies, and techniques for providing adult education along with understanding lifelong learners’ choices, developments, and needs. The Research Anthology on Adult Education and the Development of Lifelong Learners focuses specifically on adult education and the best practices, services, and educational environments and methods for both the teaching and learning of adults. This spans further into the understanding of what it means to be a lifelong learner and how to develop adults who want to voluntarily contribute to their own development by enhancing their education level or knowledge of certain topics. This book is essential for teachers and professors, course instructors, business professionals, school administrators, practitioners, researchers, academicians, and students interested in the latest advancements in adult education and lifelong learning.

This book offers an international perspective on the growing interest worldwide in lifelong learning, particularly as it relates to learning beyond compulsory education and initial occupational preparation: across working life. Much of this interest is driven by key social and economic imperatives associated with the changing requirements of work and working life, the transformation of many occupations and lengthening working lives. The concerns in lifelong learning are also associated with individuals being able to engage in learning about cultural and social topics and practices that they had not so far. It is important to understand how this learning can be assessed, recognized and certified. Many in workforces across the world learn much of the knowledge that is required to maintain their employability through that work. Yet, that learning and that competency remains without recognition and certification while this could be particularly helpful for individuals seeking to sustain their employability or to extend their work into new occupations or workplaces. The first section of this book sets out the overall project and outlines the key concepts and issues. It illustrates why there is a need for promoting and recognizing lifelong learning and explains some of the terminology, concepts and key considerations. The second section informs about a range of policies and practices that are currently being deployed or have been deployed across a range of countries within Europe, Scandinavia and Asia. The last section comprises of contributions emphasizing the ways in which the assessment of workers learning takes place in different occupational contexts and different cultural contexts. The final chapter outlines how a systemic approach to recognizing lifelong learning might progress for a country which is promoting a continuing education and training system largely outside of tertiary education institutions.

Since the second half of the twentieth century, Lifelong Learning (LLL) has become a fashionable mantra, a political slogan, and an active tool to stimulate economic growth and foster social cohesion. However, where does its dominance lie? According to Rogers (2006) LLLs main success is that it has predominantly achieved to become mainstream, as it provided a convincing rationale for embracing the natural learning process which continues unifying education into a common process, challenging the distinctiveness of educational sectors, and acknowledging that learning takes place in different contexts, thus relocating learning in both formal and informal settings. Thence, recent conceptualisations of LLL, under the universally rising awareness that learning is but an integral part of our everyday lives, and tends to continually expand, accommodating the multitude of types, sites, practices or modes of learning, both intentional and incidental. On these grounds, this book has been conceived to explore contemporary concepts, practices, benefits and challenges associated with LLL at formal, non-formal and informal levels. How LLL is currently perceived? What are the "regimes of truth" LLL is informed by? What are the influences, constraints and impact of the diverse LLL sites and practices? What are the effects on learning and learning outcomes? What are the implications for policy making, as well as for the development and implementation of LLL initiatives? These are some indicative inquiries which guided the structure and the selection of themes in the present volume. Furthermore there has also been an effort to reach for multiple perspectives from different nations around the globe. The book is structured around two principal axes (theory-based and research-based studies) so as to provide in depth insights into debates and challenges that revolve around LLL, whilst combining theory and empirical research in a dialectical fashion. It may thus be of particular interest to a wide range of audiences -- such as researchers, policy makers and practitioners -- who wish to get an international perspective in LLL. This occurs through chapters that prompt reflection, showcase innovative professional practices and provide impressive scopes of field research.
