If you’re looking for a good, clean read that combines the setting and mood of a medieval fairytale with the heat of historical romance—you found it! Lady Sabine is harboring a skin blemish that, if revealed, could cause her to be branded as a witch, put her life in danger, and damage her chances of making a good marriage. No nobleman would want to marry a woman so flawed … and a possible witch at that. Sir Bennet is returning home to protect his family from an imminent attack by neighboring lords who seek repayment of debts. Without fortune or means to pay those debts, Sir Bennet realizes his only option is to make a marriage match with a wealthy noblewoman. As a man of honor, he loathes the idea of courting a woman for her money, but with time running out for his family’s safety, what other choice does he have? In high medieval France, men and women saw the world around them as the product of tensions between opposites. Imbued with a Christian culture in which a penniless preacher was also the King of Kings and the last were expected to be first, twelfth-century thinkers brought order to their lives through the creation of opposing categories. In a highly original work, Constance Brittain Bouchard examines this poorly understood component of twelfth-century thought, one responsible, in her view, for the fundamental strangeness of that culture to modern thinking.Scholars have long recognized that dialectical reasoning was the basic approach to philosophical, legal, and theological matters in the high Middle Ages. Bouchard argues that this way of thinking and categorizing--which she terms a "discourse of opposites"--permeated all aspects of medieval thought. She rejects suggestions that it was the result of imprecision, and provides evidence that people of that era sought not to reconcile opposing categories but rather to maintain them. Bouchard scrutinizes the medieval use of opposites in five broad areas: scholasticism, romance, legal disputes, conversion, and the construction of gender. Drawing on research in a series of previously unedited charters and the earliest glossa manuscripts, she demonstrates that this method of constructing reality was a constitutive element of the thought of the period.

The works of William Shakespeare vividly represent for our admiration and study a pageant of souls with longing in whose wake we ceaselessly follow. Through some of his most memorable characters, Shakespeare illuminates the nature and character—as well as consequences—of our distinctively human passions and ambition, in particular our desire for and pursuit of both honor and love. The contributors to this collaborative volume (scholars in English Literature, Political Philosophy, and the Humanities) argue that Shakespeare has much to teach us about our longing for honor and love in particular, and thus about who we are, what we desire, and why. Through sustained reflection on the Shakespearean portraits of honor and love, which are the focus of the chapters in Souls With Longing, we become more keenly aware of our own humanity and come to know ourselves more profoundly. As the abiding popularity of his works aptly demonstrates, Shakespeare’s unforgettable portraits of souls with longing—his representations of honor and love—continue to exert undeniable sway over our political, moral, and romantic imaginations.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Pearl Harbor and Oscar-nominated writer of Braveheart comes an epic historical page-turner: the gripping, unforgettable story of a patriot's secret mission in Russia to save America from certain defeat on the eve of the Revolutionary War. A brilliant soldier and passionate patriot, Virginia cavalryman Kieran Selkirk is summoned to a clandestine meeting in the winter of 1774. There he finds none other than Benjamin Franklin, who reveals that the British have asked Catherine the Great, the ruthless and mysterious ruler of Russia, to provide twenty thousand of her soldiers to help stamp out the revolution brewing in America. Such a force, fresh from brutal warfare with the Turks, would crush all hope of American independence. Selkirk's assignment is straightforward -- and astounding. He is to travel to Russia disguised as a British mercenary, offer his services to the Tsarina in putting down a Cossack rebellion that threatens her throne, and convince her not to join the British in their war with America. To succeed, he must cross savage terrain, battle starving wolves, avoid secret assassins, fight marauding Cossacks, and contend with a court of seductive young women. In a narrative full of passion and peril, of battles on horseback and wars within the human soul, Selkirk's mission meets with thrilling surprises, including a romantic face-off with the legendary Catherine herself. Told with the hand of a master storyteller, Love and Honor is perhaps Wallace's most ambitious project yet, taking readers back to the eighteenth century in a patriotic novel brimming with romance and heroism on the grandest scale. Exotically transporting yet deeply American, Love and Honor captures the fight for good over evil, integrity and compassion over cruelty, and true love over all.
