2018 Reprint of 1933 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition software. Illustrated with Maps. A leading conservationist in the United States, Madison Grant's preoccupation with biodiversity was not limited to wildlife, but also extended to humans, particularly where that biodiversity intersected with the wider sweep of history, its meaning and interpretation, and government policy. Grant provides here a racial and ethnic history of the European settlement of North America, spanning from the ancient nations of Europe to the United States of his day. His thesis was that the United States was settled mostly by Northwestern Europeans, particularly English and Ulster Scots. To his mind, this relative homogeneity, plus the generally high quality of these enterprising settlers, conferred upon the new nation its prosperity, cohesion, stability, and defining cultural characteristics. Grant was concerned that then recent waves of immigration from poorer parts of Europe would lead to social instability, division, economic decline, and a growing underclass. He also thought that the failure to deal with problems left by slavery stored trouble for the future. Grant's represents today an unfashionable opinion, and his framework of analysis--not to mention his Nordic bias--makes him seem biased and outdated. Yet, he remains historically important. The old arguments have not gone away: as in Europe, they are being updated and revisited in the United States, which is now more socially unstable and more divided than previously thought possible.

Grant (1865-1937) was an American lawyer, writer, and zoologist known primarily for his work as a eugenicist/racist and as a conservationist, being one of the leading thinkers and activists of the Progressive Era. He was responsible for one of the most notorious works of scientific racism, The Passing of the Great Race (1916), and played an active role in crafting strong immigration restriction and anti-miscegenation laws in the US. As a conservationist, he is credited with saving many species of animals, founding numerous environmental and philanthropic organizations and developing much of the discipline of wildlife management. This work first published in 1933 is illustrated with 14 maps and includes an introduction by Henry Fairfield Osborn (1857-1935), the paleontologist and geologist who was president of the American Museum of Natural History for 25 years, of which Grant was a trustee.

This eBook edition of "History of the United States" has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. "History of the United States" is a monumental synthesis of American History subsequently produced by Charles A. Beard and his wife, Mary R. Beard. This book covers a period from the beginning of American Colonization to the establishment of The League of Nations. Charles Austin Beard (1874-1948) was one of the most influential American historians of the 20th century. For a while he was a history professor at Columbia University but his influence came from hundreds of monographs, textbooks and interpretive studies in both history and political science. His works included a radical re-evaluation of the founding fathers of the United States, who he believed were motivated more by economics than by philosophical principles. Mary Ritter Beard (1876-1958) was an American historian and archivist, who played an important role in the women's suffrage movement and was a lifelong advocate of social justice through educational and activist roles in both the labor and woman's rights movements. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1911 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XXVI THE CONQUEST OF THE CASCADE MOUNTAINS Although the first trans-continental railway across the North American continent tapped San Francisco, this was not the route that was advocated in the first instance. Public fancy was inclined rather to the suggestion that the Pacific should be gained more to the north, at the estuary of the Columbia River. This feeling was fostered, no doubt, because that country loomed more prominently in the popular eye, as a result of the famous expedition of Lewis and Clark during the years 1804-6, wherein they trailed across the unknown corner of the continent and gained the Pacific via the Columbia River. The operations of the Hudson Bay Trading Company and its numerous rivals also had served to familiarise the public with this great territory. It is strange to observe how, directly Stephenson had demonstrated the possibilities of the steam locomotive, imaginative minds drew pictures of stupendous railwaybuilding achievements across great continents, broken up by unsealed mountains and unfathomed broad rivers, as if the building of a track for the iron horse was the same as a child building toy houses with wooden bricks. As a result the North American continent became crisscrossed in all directions by railways--on paper--and it was a good thing for the country at the time that these schemes never got any farther than that stage. Since Huntington succeeded in his first great effort, the country has been spanned by a round dozen lines. Four systems, however, stand out pre-eminently. These are the Northern Pacific and the Great Northern, two lines which, in the first instance, were built after the pioneer manner, and the Western Pacific, and the Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Puget Sound roads...
