This book explores the contemporary memory of the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople (now Istanbul) in 1453. It focuses on how the conquest is remembered by Islamist-nationalist imagination in Turkey today and how architecture plays a role in shaping this memory, underscoring its susceptibility to political manipulation. Discussing Islamist-nationalist rhetoric of Istanbul’s conquest through the conceptual framework of melancholy—a significant theme in the history of ideas—the argument posits that this narrative is a politically driven endeavor fueled by paranoia, producing melancholy over the conquest of Istanbul. This book redefines melancholy as ‘a politically manipulated project’, which anchors the imagery of conquest to spatial and architectural symbols of mourning while creating imaginary lost objects. Architecture becomes the book’s subject as the bearer of clues to searching for lost objects and as a spatial-political tool of conquest rhetoric, such as the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul and the Panorama 1453 History Museum. As various groups with differing ideologies and identities continue to feel the impact of the conquest, this book also examines the ‘other’ side of the event—specifically, how the Greeks commemorate the fall of Constantinople, recognizing it as a dark memory from their perspective. This book targets diverse audiences in cultural studies, social sciences, arts, and humanities—including architecture, history, anthropology, and political studies—interested in Southeast Europe and Islamic societies.

Architecture And The Turkish City written by Murat Gül and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-30 with Architecture categories.
Architecture and urban planning have always been used by political regimes to stamp their ideologies upon cities, and this is especially the case in the modern Turkish Republic. By exploring Istanbul's modern architectural and urban history, Murat Gul highlights the dynamics of political and social change in Turkey from the late-Ottoman period until today. Looking beyond pure architectural styles or the physical manifestations of Istanbul's cultural landscape, he offers critical insight into how Turkish attempts to modernise have affected both the city and its population. Charting the diverse forces evident in Istanbul's urban fabric, the book examines late Ottoman reforms, the Turkish Republic's turn westward for inspiration, Cold War alliances and the AK Party's reaffirmation of cultural ties with the Middle East and the Balkans. Telltale signs of these moments - revivalist architecture drawing on Ottoman and Seljuk styles, 1930s Art Deco, post-war International Style buildings and the proliferation of shopping malls, luxurious gated residences and high-rise towers, for example - are analysed and illustrated in extensive detail.Connecting this rich history to present-day Istanbul, whose urban development is characterised anew by intense social stratification, the book will appeal to researchers of Turkey, its architecture and urban planning.

Since precious few architectural drawings and no theoretical treatises on architecture remain from the premodern Islamic world, the Timurid pattern scroll in the collection of the Topkapi Palace Museum Library is an exceedingly rich and valuable source of information. In the course of her in-depth analysis of this scroll dating from the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century, Gülru Necipoğlu throws new light on the conceptualization, recording, and transmission of architectural design in the Islamic world between the tenth and sixteenth centuries. Her text has particularly far-reaching implications for recent discussions on vision, subjectivity, and the semiotics of abstract representation. She also compares the Islamic understanding of geometry with that found in medieval Western art, making this book particularly valuable for all historians and critics of architecture. The scroll, with its 114 individual geometric patterns for wall surfaces and vaulting, is reproduced entirely in color in this elegant, large-format volume. An extensive catalogue includes illustrations showing the underlying geometries (in the form of incised “dead” drawings) from which the individual patterns are generated. An essay by Mohammad al-Asad discusses the geometry of the muqarnas and demonstrates by means of CAD drawings how one of the scroll’s patterns could be used co design a three-dimensional vault.

Urban Ethics written by Moritz Ege and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-05 with Philosophy categories.
This book delves into the ethical dimension of urban life: how should one live in the city? What constitutes a ‘good’ life under urban condition? Whose gets to live a ‘good’ life, and whose ideas of morality, propriety and ‘good’ prevail? What is the connection between the ‘good’ and the ‘just’ in urban life? Rather than philosophizing the ‘good’ and proper life in cities, the book considers what happens when urban conflicts and urban futures are carried out as conflicts over the good and proper life in cities. It offers an understanding of how ethical discourses, ideals and values are harmonized with material interests of different groups, taking up cases studies about environmental protection, co-housing schemes, political protest, heritage preservation, participatory planning, collaborative art production, and other topics from different eras and parts of the globe. This book offers multidisciplinary insights, ethnographic research and conceptual tools and resources to explore and better understand such conflicts. It questions the ways in which urban ethics draw on tacit moral economies of urban life and the ways in which such moral economies become explicit, political and programmatic. Chapters 1 and 11 of this book are freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.
