The Phenomenology of Spirit was Hegel's first major philosophical work and is considered by many to be his masterpiece. Its several hundred pages treat topics as diverse as Greek drama, religion, medieval court culture, natural science, Romanticism, and the Enlightenment. Hegel regarded it as the introduction to his philosophical system as a whole, and it is often thought to be the most accessible work in his otherwise difficult philosophical corpus. This anthology represents the most complete collection of essays on the Phenomenology in any language. It follows Hegel's table of contents, and all of the major sections of the work are covered. The main goal guiding the selection of essays was to collect the best articles written on the Phenomenology by distinguished international Hegel scholars and at the same time to provide systematic coverage. Although the essays are all by leading Hegel scholars, none of them presupposes any particular in-depth knowledge of Hegel or German philosophy. The object of the book is thus to make the Phenomenology more accessible for students while serving as an impetus for further Anglo-American Hegel research. Among the contributors to the book are Howard Adelman, John W. Burbidge, Martin De Nys, Kenley R. Dove, Katharina Dulckeit, Joseph C. Flay, Moltke S. Gram, Daniel P. Jamros, George Armstrong Kelly, Alasdair MacIntyre, Mitchell H. Miller, Jr., Patricia Jagentowicz Mills, Karlheinz Nusser, David W. Price, John Sallis, Harald Schondorf, Gary Shapiro, Jean-Louis Vieillard-Baron, Kenneth R. Westphal, and Merold Westphal.

Today's growing national concern about education centers on the paramount importance of teaching reading and writing. This volume offers a rigorous examination of reading and the pedagogy of reading critically. The book examines the crucial role of reading in the education of the child for the year 2000 and explores the history of reading and readers in America while surveying the attendant literacy debates. The author examines the historical progress of American reading instruction, demonstrating that how one is taught to read not only determines what one will read, but also what is permissible to read, and how pedagogies of reading define reading publics. An important chapter focuses on reading as a process of identity construction that creates not only a text but shapes the person who reads that text. The book also describes reading as a psychological process in which the creative act of manipulating the text produces the self and the world. A final chapter discusses reading as the center of the educational system and examines methodologies. An index is provided.

The field of reading is a compelling one, characterised by many debates and discussions. It is also amenable to investigations through a range of theories and research studies. In this book, eight leading authorities provide a ‘state-of-the-art’ overview of reading, using perspectives that have informed their work. There are overviews from linguistic, psychological, sociological and literary viewpoints, as well as more hybrid ones from investigations of digital literacy and multi-modality. This book celebrates what has already been achieved by bridging research, scholarship and practice; it also suggests what still needs to be done to bring the positive rewards from reading to greater numbers of young people. It also recognises that the benefits of reading extend beyond the personal. Accomplished reading skills empower people to meet the challenges of everyday life: making decisions, solving problems, and dealing with unexpected events. The need to refresh and renew our knowledge of reading has gained further impetus in the ‘information age’. New technologies for information and communication continually appear: manifestations of ‘fake news’, disinformation and conspiracy theories spread rapidly across the globe. The book underlines the importance not only of reading, but also the fact that reading between and beyond the lines is more important than ever, in print and across multiple media platforms. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Education 3–13: International Journal of Primary, Elementary and Early Years Education.
