This guidance is intended for anyone interested in or responsible for the care of war memorials. This might include parish, local and district councils, conservation professionals, contractors, statutory bodies, volunteer groups or private owners. Although the guidance covers the setting of war memorials, more detailed information on landscape issues can be found in the publication The Conservation and Management of War Memorial Landscapes. When it refers to ‘custodians’, the document is addressing anyone who has taken on formal responsibility for a war memorial, whether or not they are its legal owner. The guidance describes current best practice on the understanding, assessment, planning and implementation of conservation work to memorials as well as their ongoing maintenance and protection. It also outlines the legal frameworks and statutory duties that relate to their ownership and care. War memorials have always had a deep emotional resonance with the people of this country. Whether on a national, civic or local level, they act as constant reminders of the ultimate price of war – collective monuments to the many lives lost as well as a means of remembering the names of the individual servicemen and women who paid that price. The majority of war memorials date from the 20th century, and most of those from the years after the First World War. National and city memorials were generally monumental in concept and size but in towns and villages they tended to be more modest in style. Whatever their appearance, they continue to act as focal points for the commemoration of those killed and affected by war and as places for reflection on the effects of their loss on a community and society as a whole. In addition to their continuing commemorative role, many war memorials are of significant architectural, historic or artistic quality and have become key parts of the historic environment; it is therefore important that their physical condition should be safeguarded for the benefit of future generations as well as our own.

War memorials are important features of our cities, towns and villages. In the aftermath of the war many communities, families and individuals also chose to dedicate gardens, parks, playing fields and other open spaces as living and useful memorials or peace tributes. One hundred years on from the First World War, many communities are interested in conserving their war memorials. The memorials are very diverse. This guidance is intended for everyone interested in the care and upkeep of the gardens or setting of war memorials, and also parks and green spaces dedicated as memorials. This guidance focuses on two main types of war memorial landscapes: Gardens and the setting of war memorials The diverse range of gardens, parks, and other designed landscapes dedicated as war memorials and often simplified in the text as ‘parks and green spaces’ Recreation grounds and playing fields may be laid out as simple sites but many do include features like memorial gates, a pavilion, a bench and changing rooms, or trees planted in memory of individual servicemen. Other features like avenues, woodlands, and open countryside may also be dedicated as war memorials. The shared aim for all memorial landscapes projects is to ensure the dedication is honoured and conserved. The guidance provides an overview of how to plan projects. It aims to address queries often raised by volunteers, and draws on the experience of public parks and garden restoration projects. It is one of two Historic England publications on the care of war memorials. Conservation, Repair and Management of War Memorials provides guidance on the assessment, planning and implementation of conservation work and advice on their on-going maintenance and protection. It also provides advice on stone, metal, timber, and brick memorials and inscriptions.

The design of treatments for the conservation of stone in historical buildings and works of art is a challenging task, as a deep understanding of the working properties and performance of the available products and methods is required to tackle complex decay patterns. The chapters in this book illustrate the state of the art on traditional and innovative materials and methods for stone conservation, examining current trends and future perspectives. Each of them is focused on describing the consequent phases that complement the spectrum of the conservation intervention: preliminary investigations, condition assessment, and mapping of the deterioration patterns; surface cleaning, with a specific focus on laser technology; consolidation; protection; repair mortars and grouts; and onsite assessment and monitoring of conservation treatments. The performance of the applied conservation interventions is criticized and discussed with an aim of providing the specialists with specific tools for stone conservation. This book intends to bridge the gap between laboratory studies and conservation interventions, by linking together the diverse scientific areas involved in the preservation of stone heritage. Different case studies are included, highlighting specific conservation challenges and their solutions in order to understand and overcome them. The aim is to guide conservators, conservation scientists and heritage stakeholders in the selection of compatible and sustainable materials and techniques for Conserving Stone Heritage.

There were many memorial books published after the Great War, most dedicated to specific colleges, professions or vocations. A number of them are works of art as well as being most informative and they often contain biographical information not readily found elsewhere. Some include all who served and not just those who perished. In most instances a quality photograph of each casualty is included. Almost all these volumes are long out of print and Naval & Military Press plan to republish selected tomes over the next few years. This volume is rather different to the majority in that it covers more than one war memorial. It is a lavishly illustrated book covering the majority of British Public Schools whose pupils made the supreme sacrifice. In this instance it is the memorials, that are in many guises, from plaques to plinths and crosses to chapels, rather than the fallen, which are featured.
