Among his thirty-three published papers, Ramanujan had only one continued fraction, the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction. However, his notebooks contain over 100 results on continued fractions. At the end of his second notebook are 100 pages of unorganized material, and the third notebook comprises thirty-three pages of disorganized results. In these 133 pages of material are approximately sixty theorems on continued fractions, most of them new results. In this monograph, the authors discuss and prove each of these theorems. Aimed at those interested in Ramanujan and his work, this monograph will be of special interest to those who work in continued fractions, $q$-series, special functions, theta-functions, and combinatorics. The work is likely to be of interest to those in number theory as well. The only required background is some knowledge of continued fractions and a course in complex analysis.

To mark the World Mathematical Year 2000 an International Conference on Number Theory and Discrete Mathematics in honour of the legendary Indian Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanuj~ was held at the centre for Advanced study in Mathematics, Panjab University, Chandigarh, India during October 2-6, 2000. This volume contains the proceedings of that conference. In all there were 82 participants including 14 overseas participants from Austria, France, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Korea, Singapore and the USA. The conference was inaugurated by Prof. K. N. Pathak, Hon. Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh on October 2, 2000. Prof. Bruce C. Berndt of the University of Illinois, Urbana Chaimpaign, USA delivered the key note address entitled "The Life, Notebooks and Mathematical Contributions of Srinivasa Ramanujan". He described Ramanujan--as one of this century's most influential Mathematicians. Quoting Mark K. ac, Prof. George E. Andrews of the Pennsylvania State University, USA, in his message for the conference, described Ramanujan as a "magical genius". During the 5-day deliberations invited speakers gave talks on various topics in number theory and discrete mathematics. We mention here a few of them just as a sampling: • M. Waldschmidt, in his article, provides a very nice introduction to the topic of multiple poly logarithms and their special values. • C.

During the years 1903-1914, Ramanujan recorded most of his mathematical dis coveries without proofs in notebooks. Although many of his results had already been published by others, most had not. Almost a decade after Ramanujan's death in 1920, G. N. Watson and B. M. Wilson began to edit Ramanujan's notebooks, but, despite devoting over ten years to this project, they never completed their task. An unedited photostat edition of the notebooks was published by the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Bombay in 1957. This book is the fifth and final volume devoted to the editing of Ramanujan's notebooks. Parts I-III, published, respectively, in 1985, 1989, and 1991, contain accounts of Chapters 1-21 in the second notebook, a revised enlarged edition of the first. Part IV, published in 1994, contains results from the 100 unorganized pages in the second notebook and the 33 unorganized pages comprising the third notebook. Also examined in Part IV are the 16 organized chapters in the first notebook, which contain very little that is not found in the second notebook. In this fifth volume, we examine the remaining contents from the 133 unorganized pages in the second and third notebooks, and the claims in the 198 unorganized pages of the first notebook that cannot be found in the succeeding notebooks.

Continues documenting Indian mathematician Ramanujan's (1887-1920) life and work by presenting 28 articles, some reprinted from earlier publication. They cover his life, his illness, his wife S. Janaki, S. Narayana Iyer, E. H. Neville, Ramanujan's manuscripts and notebooks, nontechnical articles on his work, and somewhat more technical articles on his work. The four extant photographs of him are also presented. There is no index. c. Book News Inc.

In this paper, we consider general [italic]S1-actions, which may differ on the domain and on the range, with isotropy subspaces with one dimension more on the domain. In the special case of self-maps the [italic]S1-degree is given by the usual degree of the invariant part, while for one parameter [italic]S1-maps one has an integer for each isotropy subgroup different from [italic]S1. In particular we recover all the [italic]S1-degrees introduced in special cases by other authors and we are also able to interpret period doubling results on the basis of our [italic]S1-degree. The applications concern essentially periodic solutions of ordinary differential equations.

This memoir is devoted to the case of constant mean curvature surfaces immersed in [bold]R3. We reduce this geometrical problem to finding certain integrable solutions to the Gauss equation. Many new and interesting examples are presented, including immersed cylinders in [bold]R3 with embedded Delaunay ends and [italic]n-lobes in the middle, and one-parameter families of immersed constant mean curvature tori in [bold]R3. We examine minimal surfaces in hyperbolic three-space, which is in some ways the most complicated case.
