Hong Kong's impressive skyline and staggering infrastructure bear witness to the success of its construction industry. The aim of this book is to express the nature and significance of this industry. To illustrate how corporate strength, managerial abilities and technical skills play essential roles in the construction of technologically demanding projects, the book also features profiles of eight of Hong Kong's foremost contractors. As the Hong Kong Construction Association celebrates its 75th Anniversary in 1995, this publication is an appropriate tribute to the many contracting companies that have served Hong Kong with distinction.

Matt Doyle belongs to a relatively unknown government department which specialises in setting up surveillance operations and of course the odd breaking and entering. The field operatives have seen active service in post-Berlin and Northern Ireland and are collectively known as The Contractors. Matt Doyle was on a routine undercover operation but one in which he was told to take with him a civilian expert to help recover stolen data. However, the operation takes a turn for the worst as both the civilian expert and the stolen data disappear. Matt is also attracting a lot of attention from his masters. When another surveillance operation goes wrong, Matt decides that this is more than just a coincidence.

Excerpt from The Contractors and Builders' Handbook The Contractors' and Builders' Handbook is divided into three parts. The first deals with the Contractor as a Business Man; the second, with the Contractor as a Constructor, which is not a trained architect, by any means; and the third, with the Contractor as a Citizen and Taxpayer. The titles of the chapters show what subjects are considered to be of most value to him in his various spheres. The business affairs gone over in the first book have to be attended to by every contractor. He has to deal with architects and owners; he has to buy from supply men; to keep at least some record of his work in books; and to pay for insurance and bonds. After reading the part on liability insurance he is more apt than ever to attend carefully to this branch, for here neglect may be ruinous, no matter how carefully other arrangements are made, and other parts of a business carried through. In the second book the contractor can find certainty, instead of what he often makes guesswork, on plain construction. It is written in a way to be easily understood. There are many books with formulas that might as well be written in Latin as English, so far as average contractors are concerned. Yet such men have done a great amount of plan drawing and building independent of tin architect, and will go on doing so for quite a long while to come. It is believed that Book II is of much value to constructors of this kind. It is true that we have more than 30,000 architects, draftsmen, and designers; but there are between 600,000 and 700,000 carpenters; 250,000 saw-mill, planing-mill, and other wood-workers; 17,000 masons; 40,000 plasterers; and 300,000 iron and steel workers. Thousands of these men make plans; and probably half of the active builders do so at one time or another. By following the instructions in Book II they will put up at least safe buildings. The plans for the artistic ones will continue to be made by the "regulars." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Contractor written by Raymond Davis and has been published by BenBella Books, Inc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-06-27 with Political Science categories.

A lot has been written about the time contractor Raymond Davis spent in a Pakistani jail in 2011. Unfortunately, much of it is misleading—or downright false—information. Now, the man at the center of the controversy tells his side of the story for the very first time. In The Contractor: How I Landed in a Pakistani Prison and Ignited a Diplomatic Crisis, Davis offers an up-close and personal look at the 2011 incident in Lahore, Pakistan, that led to his imprisonment and the events that took place as diplomats on both sides of the bargaining table scrambled to get him out. How did a routine drive turn into front-page news? Davis dissects the incident before taking readers on the same journey he endured while trapped in the Kafkaesque Pakistani legal system. As a veteran security contractor, Davis had come to terms with the prospect of dying long before the January 27, 2011 shooting, but nothing could prepare him for being a political pawn in a game with the highest stakes imaginable. An eye-opening memoir, The Contractor takes the veil off Raymond Davis's story and offers a sober reflection on the true cost of the War on Terror.
