This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1841 edition. Excerpt: ... Minto. The memorial has the features of Buchanan's other pieces--a good deal of truth, ability, indiscretion, and offensive language. He is come home, and I have told him something of the effect of his writings. My dear Sir, Ever affectionately yours, Charles Grant. W. WILBERFORCE, ESQ. TO LORD MUNCASTER. East-Bourne, Sept. 7, 1808. My dear Muncaster, I see you know this coast; that is, all about it probably in the state in which it was before it was made an iron frontier to resist the attacks of our opposite neighbour. Yet, ironed as we are, two or three shabby little privateers, who, as far as we know, had not one cannon among them, came off the coast about a week ago, took four or five vessels close to the land, so near that when one was captured even musketry would have reached them, and hovered for ten or twelve hours so near as would have forfeited them to the Crown under the smuggling acts; yet though we have above 1500 troops, a corps of engineers, a fort that must have cost 200,000 or 300,000, flying artillery, &c. not the hair of the head of a Frenchman was injured, or a feather in his wing discomposed. Where there was a cannon there was no ammunition, where a favourable situation no cannon: the officers were all out of the way, though the affair lasted so long; and as for a ship of war, it was a nondescript. I must say I seldom have been more provoked, than to have thirty or forty poor fellows carried into a French gaol, when the slightest preparation for resistance by those who are paid and maintained for the sole purpose of resistance, would have prevented all the mischief. But what a gratifying transition across the Bay of Biscay! Most cordially do I congratulate you, my dear Muncaster, on the happy change of affairs...

Excerpt from The Correspondence of William Wilberforce, Vol. 1 of 2 No apology can be necessary for presenting to the notice of the American public an edition of the Correspondence of Mr. Wilber force. Living at the most eventful period of modern times, and intimately associated with all the actors in the mighty and fearful drama of which Europe was the theatre, during the latter part of' the past and the beginning of the present century - participating in the counsels of the successive ministries by which the government of Great Britain was conducted during the period in which that nation exercised an unequalled control over the destinies of the civilized world - representing the interests of one-tenth of that kingdom in the House of Commons, and possessing an influence in his talents and character paramount even to that he derived from this position, an interest is attached to all his actions and thoughts, such as few other men could awaken. This interest is felt equally by the statesman, the philanthropist, and the Christian, and each will find, in these volumes, sufficient to repay him for their perusal. The correspondence of such men as Pitt, Fox, Canning, Eldon, Wellesley, and Brougham, men of enlarged minds, and occupying the highest stations in the British government, cannot be devoid of interest to any. Never descending to the petty details of pri vate scandal, or even public gossip, there are still numerous traits of character displayed in their letters, which serve to introduce the reader to a more intimate acquaintance with them than general history affords. Not illustrated. 1841 edition. Excerpt: ...neighbourhood, when he was called suddenly away by the illness of a friend. "In how different a congregation," he writes to his family on the first Sunday he now spent at Bath, "have I been from that of Pakefield! It reminded me of the difference between the twelve poor fishermen, (I did not till now recollect that yours are literally such, ) who constituted the first assemblages of Christians, and the welldressed and well-mannered meetings of the high and the literary, who used to congregate for their various purposes of devotion or instruction. Though I make it an invariable rule not to write letters on a Sunday, except in cases of necessity and charity, yet on the principle of charity I may send you a few friendly lines. I need not assure you that on this day you are all much in my thoughts. I hope you all feel grateful for being brought at once into so friendly an intimacy with so excellent a family as that at Earlham. For my part I am still full of Earlham, or rather of its inhabitants. One of our great astronomers has stated it as probable that there may be stars whose light has been travelling to us from the creation, and has not yet reached our little planet; and thus some have accounted for new stars first observed by more recent astronomers. In this Earlham family a new constellation has broke upon us, for which you must invent a name as you are fond of star-gazing; 1816. Mrs. Stephen's Death. 173 and if it indicate a little monstrosity, (as they are apt to give the collections of stars the names of strange creatures, dragons, and bears, &c.) the various parts of which the Earlham assemblage is made up, may justify some name indicative of queer combinations; only let it include also all that is to be esteemed, ...
