Worn to mold the torso to a desired shape for aesthetic purposes, the corset was worn by both men and women up until the early 20th century. Some of the earliest corsets were known to make women faint throughout the day as they were laced so tightly, their respiratory systems suffered. Crinoline is a thick, stiff fabric that was used under women's skirts to achieve a voluminous affect. At their peak of popularity, the crinoline would allow a woman's skirt to reach six feet (180 centimeters) in diameter.
