Excerpt from The Country Life Press: Garden City, New York When the tenth birthday of Doubleday, Page & Company was celebrated on January 1, 1910, the occasion prompted us to consider in what direction the future growth of the business would lead. We realized that our building at Nos. 133-137 East Sixteenth Street, New York, was hopelessly inadequate. It was erected in 1905, and although the floor space was just seven times more than the area occupied at 34 Union Square, where the business was begun in 1900, our needs had so grown that very soon a separate stock room had to be acquired in Twenty-fifth Street, conducted at great inconvenience; and the manufacture of books was carried on in more than a score of different places, at still greater inconvenience. This project contributes to our understanding of rural Midwesterners and farm newspapers at the turn of the century. While cultural historians have mainly focused on readers in town and cities, it examines Midwestern farmers. It also contributes to the "new rural history" by exploring the ideas of Hal Barron and others that country people selectively adapted the advice given to them by reformers. Finally, it furthers our understanding of American farm newspapers themselves and offers suggestions on how to use them as sources.

In a fast-paced, modern Ireland it can be difficult to imagine how different our lives are to those that went before. In this book Olive Sharkey lovingly describes the lives, activities and material possessions of irish people living between 1800 and the 1930s. The implements of the home, the farm, the garden and home-crafts are recounted, with detailed drawings and photographs. These once familiar objects - bittles, butterworkers, noggins and truckle beds - are explored, as we are shown a lifestyle where people made much of their own furniture and clothes, and fed themselves from their own land. Based on Olive Sharkey's Ways of Old, this new addition to the O'Brien 'Heritage Series' will draws the reader back to a time when people were much more tuned into the rhythm of the year and the ground beneath their feet.

These poems are about the dialects of the heart—those we are incapable of parting from, and those that are largely forgotten. Life in a Country Album is a vital book for our times. With this beautiful, epic collection, Nathalie Handal affirms herself as one of our most diverse and important contemporary poets.
