This book, in light of the fractures within the United Church of Christ (UCC), encourages the members of the UCC to have meaningful discussions about the word "covenant". It is the author's hope that her resource will bring people together around this one word and show that, even with a diversity of views, people have more things in common than not in common. It contains nine thought-provoking sessions that explore the concept of covenant as it relates to the Hebrew Testament; Jesus Christ; God; our UCC heritage; the wider UCC; autonomy; and more.

From the earliest days of recorded history, conflict has been an integral part of human life. Although conflict and crisis are painful, they are visible and vital signs of the perpetual work of the church and society. Viewed in this light, they become sources of growth and gifts to be pressed into service. The trouble with Jesus was--and is--that he stands in the midst of conflict, and allows the conflict actually to live in him even though it tears him apart, in order that new life might be born. The trouble with Jesus was--and is--that he invites us to follow where he has led. Newly revised and expanded, this book is not a how-to manual for problem-solving, but a hopeful and creative reflection on the positive aspects of conflict in our relationships and institutions, as demonstrated throughout scripture in the life and ministry of Jesus, the early church, the church today, and within ourselves. For those willing to embrace conflict and the work that it requires, the result is a celebration of the community that God has given us. Conflict is frightening. It threatens our sense of control and upsets our notions of order. It touches our vulnerability and reveals uncomfortable realities. Therefore, we tend to deny conflict, or we try to manage it, tame it. In fantasies of ultimate control, we banish conflict altogether. . . . But the ways of God in the real and quite tangible world in which I live are obviously not the same as my ways. In this world, I am rarely in agreement with others and God obviously tolerates much more untidiness than I find comfortable. This conflict, which is with me every hour and becomes quite apparent hundreds of times a day, arouses fear within me. I want to be in control, and yet I cannot be in control. from Conflict and a Christian Life This edition features a study guide designed by educator Amanda Millay Hughes, making it a valuable resource for group study by vestries, parish staffs, adult education groups, and anyone wishing to gain greater facility in negotiati

The relationship between the church and Israel has been the source of passionate debate among Christians throughout much of church history. In recent years the traditional pro-Israel stance of evangelicals has come under fire by those who support the Palestinian cause, calling for a new perspective and more nuanced approach by Christians who believe that the land of Israel belongs to the Jewish people by virtue of God’s covenants and promises. Israel, the Church, and the Middle East challenges the supersessionist drift of the modern church, showing that God retains a plan and purpose for the Jewish people while also addressing a number of the divisive issues raised by authors critical both of Israel and of those who affirm Israel's right to the land. The book explores the hermeneutics and wider effects of the conflict, such as the growing antipathy within the church toward the evangelization of the Jewish people. It provides readers with an objective and interdisciplinary treatment, which is irenic and respectful in tone. The book is directed toward pastors, global Christian leaders, theological students, and well-read lay Christians who are actively seeking guidance and resources regarding the Middle East conflict. The contributors represent a broad evangelical spectrum.

The Bloody Covenant written by Ronald Ireland and has been published by The History Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-11-08 with History categories.

It was theology against politics. Ordinary men against changing systems of government and belief, fighting for what they believed was right. " The Bloody Covenant" tells the story of a period in which two rival forms of the same belief jostled to become the dominant theology in Scotland, and of how the Presbyterian covenants drove its followers into a century and a half of discrimination, violence and destruction. Of how the government of Great Britain and Ireland dealt with the northern threat of divided religious thought and the real danger of revolution. Ronald Ireland's account of the bloody history of the era is brought to life by following one ordinary man from one ordinary burgh of Scotland. An authoritative guide to how the big decisions made by some of most important people in the land affected individuals as well as the country as a whole, it is an essential and accessible read for anyone interested in the British civil wars of the seventeenth century.

A collection of essays, articles, and article reviews that arise directly or indirectly out of Torrance's involvement in the ecumenical movement. ÒOurs must be the task of learning together again how to confess, like the early Church, faith in Jesus Christ as Saviour and God in all its breadth and length and height and depth, and therefore in the overflowing love of God. Only in glorification of God the Son and in actual encouragement of the Gospel can we produce, as a paragon, a doctrine of the Church in which our differences are lost sight of because they are destroyed from behind by a masterful faith in the Saviour of men.Ó - From the Introduction

In the 20th century the Dutch Reformed Churches experienced conflict over the doctrine of the divine covenants. This conflict is evidence of the importance of covenant theology to the Reformed churches. Klaas Schilder reacted to the covenant theology of Abraham Kuyper and Herman Bavinck. Herman Hoeksema rejected the formulations of William Heyns and Schilder. Differences in covenant theology led to church splits in the GKN in the Netherlands and in the Protestant Reformed Churches in North America. The author argues that contemporary conflicts connected to the New Perspective on Paul and Federal Vision help to shed light on weaknesses in the covenant formulations of Herman Hoeksema and Klaas Schilder.
