These exciting studies on the first five books of the Bible cover a wide range of topics, challenging the reader to confront the issues of faithfulness, responsibility, and justice in an ever-changing world. Brueggemann sets the issues of praise and lament, grace and duty, truth and power in new frames of reference that call for a response. He demonstrates that the Christian reader of the Bible cannot blithely pass over the Pentateuch as simply pre-Christian and without relevance. His creative use of metaphor and imagination invite the reader to encounter freshly in these biblical texts God's call and the work of justice.

Many Christians will be familiar with the idea that Christ fulfills the Old Testament prophecies and promises concerning God's people in the Old Testament. But when we begin to see this, too, in terms of covenant, then we begin to more fully understand precisely what it was that Christ fulfilled and what the implications of this are for those of us who are what the Bible calls "in Christ." Not only did Jesus meet all the requirements of the overarching theme of the Old Testament in general terms, but he filled out to their fullest potential all the intricacies of detail of each of the separate divine covenants that we find there.

American, European, political, and theological histories intersect in this important new exploration of the founding of the United States. The Covenant Connection examines the way in which the Protestant Reformation and federal covenant theology, which lay at the foundation of Reformed Protestantism in its Calvinist version, played a major role in shaping the political life and ideas of the colonies of British North America and ultimately the new United States of America. Contributors to the volume look at the most critical facets of this connection over nearly three centuries, from the beginning of the Reformation in sixteenth-century Zurich to the declaration of American independence and the writing of the U.S. Constitution. Individual chapters show how federal theology led to a revival of Biblical republicanism in Reformation Europe; how it was applied and modified in countries such as Switzerland, the Netherlands, Scotland, and England; and how it was carried across the Atlantic by the early settlers of North Americamost particularly the Puritans but also other groups such as the Dutch and the Scottishto form the matrix for American constitutionalism, democratic republicanism, and federalism. As a collection, The Covenant Connection provides an irrefutable analysis of the profound biblical and Reformation influences on the founding of America.

In Reviewing the Covenant, six Jewish philosophers—and one Christian colleague—respond to the work of the renowned Jewish theologian Eugene B. Borowitz, one of the leading figures in the movement of "postmodern" Jewish philosophy and theology. The title recalls Borowitz's earlier book, Renewing the Covenant: A Theology for the Postmodern Jew, in which he lent this movement a theological agenda, and the essays in this book respond to Borowitz's call: to revitalize contemporary Judaism by renewing the covenant that binds modern Jews to re-live and re-interpret the traditions of Judaism's past. Together with the introductory and responsive essays by Peter Ochs and Borowitz himself, the essays offer a community of dialogue, an attempt to reason-out how Jewish faith is possible after the Holocaust and how reason itself is possible after the failings of the great "-isms" of the modern world. This dialogue is conducted under the banner of "postmodern Judaism," a daunting term that by the end of the book receives a surprisingly direct meaning, namely, the condition of disillusionment and loss out of which Jews can and must find a third way out of the modern impasse between arrogant rationalism and arrogant religion. Representing a major intellectual response to the leading theologian of liberal Judaism, the book provides a significant indication of future directions in Jewish religious thought. Contributors include Eugene B. Borowitz, Yudit Kornberg Greenberg, Susan Handelman, David Novak, Peter Ochs, Thomas W. Ogletree, Norbert M. Samuelson, and Edith Wyschogrod.

This twelve week study shows how the historic understanding of Covenant helps us build a love-for-a-lifetime Marriage. Marriage is not what our culture—or we— say it is. What is the one flesh relationship that was designed by God?

When two enter a Covenant, the identity of each party enters the other. This produces a bond of shared identity between the two and alters the nature of each—“what God has joined together.” God’s instructions are logical consequences of these realities. We love the other as we love ourselves because the other is now part of us. Our hearts want to love, but we do not love consistently. Why? Because our guidance systemour old sense of self-interest—pulls in other directions.

Covenant is not just a tie that binds. It is also a plan that teaches us what to do, why we do these things, and how we become able to do them. Our married self is a new self. Obedience does not oppose our nature; it authentically expresses our new self and new bond. Shifting our guidance system to follow God’s plan and building this new life is the path to the best Marriage.

The Covenant Retreat affirms that each of us is called into a covenant with God. Through this retreat experience, high school seniors begin to identify their unique relationship with God, as an individual and as part of the larger Church. The leader's guide includes material to help teachers and leaders bring the experience into the classroom for weeks before and after the retreat. Leaders will find detailed directions for implementing the retreat; lesson plans, prayers, and handouts; material to help use the student component, Answering God's Call to Covenant, after the retreat; and suggested models for liturgical celebrations to bring the retreat to a close. It also includes suggestions on how to celebrate the retreat with the entire school through graduation and other activities. Answering God's Call to Covenant helps older adolescents consider where they want to go in life before they encounter the crossroads of young adulthood. Students address seven key questions and write their own covenant statements, which will help guide them through life's many challenges. The student text also helps seniors reflect, pray, and discern on their own after graduation.
