By the time King James VI of Scotland became James I of England at the death of Elizabeth I. in 1603, the Reformed Faith of Presbyterianism was already well-established in Scotland. But James had never really liked Presbyterians. He (and later his son King Charles I.) tried to change the Scottish kirks to the template of the Anglican Church. Scottish Presbyterians vetoed this royal usurpation by signing the National Covenant in 1638, which affirmed religious independence from a state church. They signed the Solemn League and Covenant again in 1643, pledging their loyalty only to the Crown Rights of Jesus Christ. They became known as the Scottish Covenanters. They were in opposition to the theory of the Divine Right of Kings and stated that limitless sovereignty applies only to God. This is an account of the activities of the Covenanters in Northern Scotland.
