It's 1990, and New York soloist April Manning is trying to rebalance her world in the aftermath of her parents' deaths. An offer to join the struggling West Coast Ballet Theatre as a principal dancer seems like the perfect opportunity for a fresh start-a new life in San Francisco, an exciting step up in her career, and the hope of a redefined sense of family. But the other dancers are wary, clannish and tight-lipped, particularly about an incident that hastened the departure of their beloved artistic director, leading to the arrival of his replacement, the young, inexperienced Anders Gunst. And no one wants to talk about Jana, a former company member who defiantly walked out rather than work under Anders. It is Jana herself who offers April hints, and even friendship, where she reveals a loneliness and hunger to belong that newly orphaned April well understands. But there is something troubling about Jana, and what April doesn't know could prove deadly. A prequel to the Ballet Theatre Chronicles, BALLET ORPHANS explores the work and sacrifices required to arrive at the highest tiers of the professional ballet world, coupled with the primal, universal desire to belong, to love and be loved, and the lengths we'll go to protect those we call family.

This book is about K-pop dance and the evolution and presence of its dance fandom on social media. Based on five years of ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, choreography, and participation-observation with 40 amateur and professional K-pop dancers in New York, California, and Seoul, the book traces the evolution of K-pop dance from the 1980s to the 2020s and explains its distinctive feature called ‘gestural point choreography’ – front-driven, two-dimensional, decorative and charming movements of the upper body and face – as an example of what the author theorizes as ‘social media dance.’ It also explores K-pop cover dance as a form of intercultural performance, suggesting that, by imitating and idolizing K-pop dance, fans are eventually ‘fandoming’ themselves and their bodies. Presenting an ethnographic study of K-pop dance and its fandom, this book will be a valuable resource for students and scholars of Media Studies, Korean Studies, Performance Studies, and Dance.

Travel Back to a Time of Innocence and Adventure "Until Kirby Mellen was ten nothing very exciting had ever happened to him or his father or his mother or his little sister Bitsy." All of this changes very suddenly with the death of far-distant Uncle Hiram, who leaves his Florida motel-painted pink-to Kirby's mom. People like the Mellens, from Minnesota, do not paint their buildings pink. And these seven buildings are not just quietly pink-they are outrageously PINK. "It was pinker than Kirby's necktie or Bitsy's hair ribbon. It was pink, pink, PINK." It isn't long after the Mellens arrive at the motel that things go even more off kilter with regulars (and some irregulars) taking up residence in the cottages. There's old Miss Ferry who talks to crabs and other beach creatures, Marvello the magician, the two gangsters Locke and Black, and jolly Mr. Carver, who has a knack for uncovering the secrets left by Uncle Hiram. Carol Ryrie Brink's classic children's tale evokes a time of innocence and adventure in the lives of the Mellen children and their friends. Written long before the introduction of the internet, it speaks of people solving problems through understanding and coming together. With delightful illustrations by Sheila Greenwald, this story will capture the imagination of children of all ages.

Fiona Garvey, ballet dancer and recent college graduate, joins the Peace Corps to escape a painful family situation and ends up in Gabon, an African country she's never heard of, hoping its wild beauty will speak to her artist's soul. Instead Fiona quickly realizes she¿s in over her head. Her job teaching English, executed in breezy Western style, crashes hard into Africa's complicated reality. One of her older students becomes menacingly fixated on Fiona, until her former trainer, Christophe, a charismatic, philandering Gabonese man she¿s incapable of forgetting, uses his privilege and connections to make the problem go away.Surrounded by the roots of African dance, Fiona¿s abandoned ballet practice gradually morphs into something feral and mystical. This, along with her pale blue eyes, prompts the locals to believe she holds the power to access the spirit world. And when her former student returns, bent on confronting Fiona one last time, it is not Christophe but Fiona who can¿and must¿reach inside herself to find her own personal power and fight back.Blending humor and pathos, A DANCER¿S GUIDE TO AFRICA takes the reader along on a suspenseful, sensual journey through Africa¿s complex beauty, mystery and mysticism.
