Imaginative and creative thought is what distinguishes humans from animals. It is what defines us as Homo sapiens. What it means to have thoughts, and what gives us the remarkable capacity to think, have been subjects of debate for centuries. In The Cradle of Thought, Peter Hobson presents a new and provocative theory about the nature and origins of uniquely human thinking. A prevailing opinion on the acquisition of thought and language is that babies are born with pre-programmed modules in the brain. But this is too narrow and too simplistic an explanation. Professor Hobson's radical view is that what gives us the capacity to think is the quality of a baby's exchanges with other people over the first 18 months of life. As part and parcel of an intellectual revolution in the second year, the child achieves new insight into the minds of itself and others. Human thought, language, and self-awareness are developed in the cradle of emotional engagement between infant and caregiver; social contact has vital significance for mental development. Professor Hobson draws on 20 years of clinical experience and academic research as a developmental psychologist, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. He follows the thread of mental development over the first 18 months of ababy's life to describe and to explain the emergence of thinking; he shares startling insights into mental development gained from his studies of autism; and he shows how, from infancy to adulthood, disturbances of thinking may be rooted in troubled early relationships. Finally, he pinpoints tiny but momentus changes in the social relations of pre-human primates from which human thought sprang. In this fascinating and thought-provoking book, Peter Hobson shows how very early engagement with others fosters the child's growth out of the cradle of infancy and into the realm of human thought and culture.

Peter Hobson, a Professor of Developmental Psychopathology, examines how thought develops in infants, focussing on the subsequent differences in the quality of thinking between individuals and what this suggests about the place of thought in the history of evolution. Hobson firmly refutes the notion that thinking is turned on by biologically pre-determined 'modules' in the brain, arguing instead that it arises from the nature and quality of the relationship between parent and child in the first eighteen months of life. This will be a controversial book not only in scientific circles, but also in its contribution to the wider parenting, IQ and nature/nurture debates. Accessible, authoritative and extremely readable, Cradle of Thought is a major work of popular science.

A manifesto for a radically different philosophy and practice of manufacture and environmentalism "Reduce, reuse, recycle" urge environmentalists; in other words, do more with less in order to minimize damage. But as this provocative, visionary book argues, this approach perpetuates a one-way, "cradle to grave" manufacturing model that dates to the Industrial Revolution and casts off as much as 90 percent of the materials it uses as waste, much of it toxic. Why not challenge the notion that human industry must inevitably damage the natural world? In fact, why not take nature itself as our model? A tree produces thousands of blossoms in order to create another tree, yet we do not consider its abundance wasteful but safe, beautiful, and highly effective; hence, "waste equals food" is the first principle the book sets forth. Products might be designed so that, after their useful life, they provide nourishment for something new-either as "biological nutrients" that safely re-enter the environment or as "technical nutrients" that circulate within closed-loop industrial cycles, without being "downcycled" into low-grade uses (as most "recyclables" now are). Elaborating their principles from experience (re)designing everything from carpeting to corporate campuses, William McDonough and Michael Braungart make an exciting and viable case for change.

Some people thrive off of manipulating people. Now Osama and Saddan were bad but the infamous Charles Manson was a sick genius a master manipulator I think maybe he studied brainwashing techniques and learned how to control people he figured he had to because of his size and he was a criminal and he was afraid someone was going to hurt him. So he learned how to command the attention of men, lured them with drugs or whatever he had and then he gave the orders to go and kill all the people at this particular address because they did not connect him to get into the entertainment industry so he could be a rock star. They was also to leave some type of sign so that they could blame it on black people and in his sick and twisted mind he thought that a whole nation would follow him in his race riot and he even gave it a name that would be remembered down through the generations he called it Helter Skelter and he used psychedelic drugs, psychedelic lights and psychedelic posters to put them in a psychedelic state. For the effect of the drug LSD “Lucy in the sky with diamonds” but it was word play, mind play, and manipulation on a grand scale I don’t blame these notorious individuals. I blame their parents they were never taught not to be manipulated to the point that if they committed the ultimate crime that they would have to pay for it, It is a good case of the things that you were never taught by your parents or the ignorance in life you never imagined that could make you kill. Truly someone drop the ball somewhere.

Dr. Warren is confident that he has succeeded in solving the problem where the human race originated, or where the Garden of Eden was. Not a few will be startled to learn that the cradle of the human race was at the North Pole, but Dr. Warren sustains this theory with a surprising array of evidence, and this in turn throws much light on the most vital of the current problems of biology, terrestrial physics, ancient cosmology, comparative mythology, primeval history, scientific anthropology, and Hebrew and Ethnic tradition. Dr. Warren has given to this work the study of many years, and writes with an enthusiasm and assurance of victory which make his volume exceedingly interesting.
