This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1914 edition. Excerpt: ... Chapter VII THE HOOKED RUG IN COTTON AND WOOL WE may safely say that the hooked rug or the pulled rug, as it is sometimes called, is the most important of the handmade rugs. It has been more successfully developed under new conditions of craftsmanship than any other of the old-fashioned rugs. In nearly all the show rooms of the Arts and Crafts Societies there are examples of it in charming colors and appropriate designs. Two village industries have been started to make it; one in the mountains of New Hampshire and one at Cranberry Island, near North East Harbor, Maine. Besides these two industries there are many isolated workers making successful hooked rugs. The larger industries have been placed on a sound financial basis, and the workers who are mostly women are extremely well paid. These women of the New England farms have been associated with this style of rug and its traditions for several generations. They are nearly all familiar with the gentle art of hooking and have therefore helped to revive this branch of craftsmanship in this section of the country. While they are familiar with the technique of hooked rugs, they have not been able to give their products a market value, because they could not plan them from the standard of modern craftsmanship without the knowledge of design and color arrangement. I remember the first time I saw a hooked rug. I at once realized that in its technique were the possibilities for the development of a crafts-manlike rug. Though certainly the appearance of the one I first saw was anything but hopeful. It came from Prince Edward Island, Canada. The maker had evidently been carried away by the enthusiasm for her skill in hooking and had ingenuously and likewise ingeniously, worked in a pattern of...

Excerpt from Antique Rugs From the Near East The interest thus awakened in Oriental rugs and the growing delight in colorful interior decoration, soon brought the attention of the antique trade to truly old specimens. These appeared in different places in the Orient itself, particularly in Turkey and several adjacent countries, and also in Italy, Spain and Portugal. Even earlier, silk carpets were eagerly purchased by several wealthy collectors who laid especial emphasis upon the magnificent and artistic furnishing of their houses. Other rugs, whid1 had usually been discarded by churches and palaces because of their more or less damaged condition; could be secured very dieaply in Spain, southern Germany and especially in Italy. These were gladly purchased by various museums and by artists who used them in furnishing their studios. Thus scholars gradually became interested in Oriental rugs and began to study them, though only incidentally and with hesitation. It became evident that the very numerous specimens which dealers brought to Europe from the East were almost all modern. But on the other hand, old paintings frequently bore reproductions of rugs which were identical with a few in the antique trade. Then the philologists began to study the inscriptions whid1 appeared in many rugs. Such material, as well as existent information from historical sources, were used for the determination of age. The comparison of the decoration of rugs with that of ardiitecture, metal work, pottery, textiles and other manifestations of Oriental art, gave further indi cations. On the other hand, modern rugs made in the different regions of the Near East and Central Asia were used to determine the origin of the antique specimens. This method was especially popular among the large _rug dealers who did buying and manufacturing in those regions. Several exhibitions and subsequent publications particularly furthered the understanding and interest in Oriental rugs-above all, the great Vienna Rug Exhibition of 1891, followed by the important publication devoted to this exhibition and by a supplementary volume in 1907. In 1908 Martin's history of Oriental carpets appeared and finally in 1911 came the publication on the Mohammadan exhibition in Munich. Excerpt from How to Make Rugs The subject of Home Industries is be ginning to attract the attention of those who are interested in political economy and the general welfare of the country, and thoughtful people are asking them selves Why, in all the length and breadth of America, there are no well-established and prosperous domestic manufactures. We have no articles of use or luxury made in homes which are Objects of com mercial interchange or sources Of family profit. To this general statement there are but few exceptions, and curiously enough these are, for the most part, in the work of our native Indians. Excerpt from Oriental Rugs Out of the years spent in the work little time has been devoted to the fanciful or imaginative side of the subject. Its poesy and romance have been in a measure accepted as corollaries, assumed as among the reasons for the book's existence, and, therefore, perhaps neglected in the presenta tion. To those who have already come under the spell of the Eastern weavings this will not be felt as a lack. What of color has been distributed through these pages is of more moment to those who are still groping in the dark belief that rugs are - merely rugs. If too little of tingent has been employed, it is because the fabrics themselves, properly understood, provide it in plenty - far better than can any vocabulary or any thesaurus of poetic imagery. If foundation shall here have been laid for that understanding, the work will have been well done, and the worker will be content.
