If a civic education is the essential foundation for a functioning, discursive democracy, how should it be taught? This book offers an innovative solution, arguing that far from abandoning the often- grand promise of civic education as a means of cultivating reasoning skills and democratic character, we should embrace it, and proposes a reimagined civic education based on teaching students in primary and secondary school law and legal reasoning. This is the first book dedicated exclusively to the question of the relationships between sustainability and the capability approach. It is rather astonishing that the issue of sustainability first posed by the Brundtland commission in 1987 has gained so little attention from capability scholars despite the approach’s focus on human well-being. This book starts with a seminal contribution by Sen on the "Ends and Means of Sustainability" delivered as a keynote in 2000. All contributions to the book focus on the difficulties that arise from a freedom-oriented view of sustainability: they argue for taking note of the impact of human life on nature, they question the meaning of intergenerational justice when measured in the currency of "substantive freedoms" (capabilities), they raise the issue of collective responsibility and suggest ways to model and operationalize the capability approach to sustainable development. The conditions in which 'development'--the process by which people, individually and collectively, enhance their capacities to improve their lives according to their values and interests--operates have significantly changed in the global information age, a period characterized by the technological revolution in information and communication, the rise of the networking form of social organization, and the global interdependence of economies and societies. This volume aims to redefine the means and goals of development in this new context: first, by characterizing the specific mode of development, informational development, that the authors consider to be the driver of the creation of material wealth in the twenty-first century; secondly, by reconceptualizing human development as the fulfilment of human wellbeing in the multidimensionality of the human experience, ultimately affirming dignity as the supreme value of development; thirdly, by examining the relationship between informational development and human development. Transnational law currently appears fragmented and captured by self-interested corporate actors. Good faith is at the heart of this fragmentation. To defend transnational law thus requires an account of good faith. Good Faith in Transnational Law explains and recasts fragmentation and capture as something valuable, and casts good faith as an obligation of other-regarding communicative conduct. Frédéric Gilles Sourgens argues that the fragmentation we experience is a virtue: for communication across vastly different commercial, economic, social, cultural and linguistic contexts to remain legally meaningful, we must translate our different expectations into a shared, context-bound idiom. He argues that law harnesses stress of such translations through stress fields that reintegrate the different experiences in a shared transnational discourse.

This book offers an inquiry into the ethics of ‘human needs capture’ for design purposes by drawing upon ethical theories and narratives. Designers have historically relied upon the satisfaction of human needs as a moral justification for their profession. This volume offers an alternative critique to challenge this perspective, arguing that seeking to satisfy needs doesn't offer sufficient moral justification on its own. It presents an extensive ethical analysis of the notion of need and develops a thought-provoking case for a plural reconceptualisation of the notion of ‘need’ as user-based knowledge about product and service improvement opportunities.
