Excerpt from The Crime Club As he did so, the captain experienced a painful sensation. He felt a little cold ring of steel pressed against his right temple, and from past experience, both Objective and subjective, he knew that a Colt cartridge was held, so to speak, in leash within five inches of his head. It was very still on board the Gigantic. The liner rose and fell easily on the long, oily Atlantic swell of the Bay of Biscay. Moreover, there was upon the entire vessel that peace which comes be tween the post-prandial exercises, such as deck quoits, of Atlantic passengers and the comparative bustle which arrives with tea-time. In short, the hour was half-past three o'clock. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In 1928, the publishing house Doubleday, Doran formed a separate division to publish mystery and detective stories exclusively. The Crime Club, Inc. became an industry phenomenon, publishing nearly 2,500 books over the next 63 years. It was home to many of the genre's most famous characters, including The Saint, Bulldog Drummond, Hildegarde Withers, and the insidious Dr. Fu Manchu. It introduced American readers to the works of many prominent British crime-fiction authors, among them Margery Allingham, H. C. Bailey, Anthony Berkeley, and Philip MacDonald. A significant number of Crime Club books attained best-seller status, and many were licensed by Hollywood studios for adaptation to the silver screen. Few mystery readers failed to recognize the Club's modernistic trademark, which appeared on every volume and was affectionately known as "the Little Gunman." In this monograph, pop-culture historian Ed Hulse (The Blood 'n' Thunder Guide to Pulp Fiction, The Art of Pulp Fiction, etc.) meticulously chronicles the Crime Club's Golden Age-1928 to 1940-in extensive detail, reporting on the imprint's corporate structure, personnel changes, and marketing strategies. He discusses its most notable books and authors and places the Club in its proper historical context. Hulse also presents the first complete chronological list of Crime Club releases, identifying the monthly "Selections" sent to subscribing members during this period. He lists the Crime Club movies made between 1928 and 1940 and extensively covers the eight 1937-39 Crime Club adaptations produced by Universal Pictures. Finally, Old Time Radio researcher Karl Schadow weighs in on early broadcasts that adapted Crime Club mysteries for thrill-hungry listeners. The monograph is profusely illustrated with reproductions of dust jackets, photographs from film versions, and advertisements from publishing-industry trade journals.

On 17 July 1904, an intimate group of like-minded gentlemen sat down to dinner in London's Great Central Hotel. They were united by one shared interest: a fascination with crime and the workings of the criminal mind. This meeting, occurring in the golden age of literary dinners and good fellowship, marked the birth of the Crimes Club, a concept that quickly developed into a professional and academic society boasting members of the legal and literary elite, with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes, and gregarious bon viveur at its heart. Until now, the exclusive nature of the club meant that little has been divulged about these aficionados of murder, but Conan Doyle and the Crimes Clubgives readers a thrilling insight into the previously veiled lives of these celebrated men of the time. Recounting their detective investigations, spying escapades, and 'criminous' journalism that no doubt inspired Doyle’s own literary feats, Stephen Wade explores all manner of criminal activities that were examined and discussed by the club, ranging from wives buried in basements, to bodies cast into the River Thames, and lovers poisoned with arsenic. A lively and compelling read, Conan Doyle and the Crimes Club provides a unique window into the Edwardian clique of criminologists and gentleman sleuths. Welcome to the club.
