Within nearly every town in the United States, the most prevalent form of pro-life advocacy lives unregulated in strip malls, medical buildings, buses, and small office complexes. The crisis pregnancy center evangelical movement encompasses more volunteers, volunteer hours, and organizations than all other forms of pro-life activism in the United States combined.1 With free pregnancy tests and ultrasounds, in conjunction with free materials and parenting classes, pro-life pregnancy centers are playing an increasingly crucial role in the debate around abortions. Pregnancy centers are regularly affiliated with evangelical Christian networks and national pro-life groups, who advertise services using neutral medical language to the public and images to present themselves as comprehensive health centers. The majority of centers are part of an evangelical pro-life movement, which designed their strategy under the assumption that meeting the material, emotional, and spiritual needs of pregnant people with unwanted pregnancies will convince them to forgo their abortion desires. In many ways, crisis pregnancy centers are the pro-life movement. These pro‐life clinics are an important venue for the debate around reproductive health, yet academic scholars, politicians, doctors, and ordinary people know little about these influential political mechanisms. CPCs do not provide or refer for abortion or contraception; however, they publicize in ways that give the appearance that they provide abortions, without disclosing their biased religious nature and limitations of their family-planning services.

There is more to the pro-life movement than campaigning against abortion. That, at least, is the logic behind a large and growing network of pro-life pregnancy centers offering “help” to pregnant women. As these centers face increasing scrutiny, this book offers the first social-scientific study of the pro-life pregnancy help movement. The work being performed at pro-life pregnancy centers, maternity homes, and other charitable agencies is, Laura S. Hussey suggests, distinguished by several strategic features: it is directed at non-state targets, operates in largely privatized venues, employs service provision as its primary tactic, and aims to address causes popularly associated with its countermovement such as women’s (including poor women’s) wellbeing and empowerment. The motives and nature of the services such pregnancy centers deliver have become the subjects of competing political narratives—but, until now, very little empirical research. A rich, mixed-method study including data from two original national surveys and extensive interviews, Hussey’s book adjudicates these opposing views even as it provides a measured look at the identity, work, history, and impact of pro-life pregnancy centers and related service providers, as well as their relations with the larger American antiabortion movement. To what extent is pro-life pregnancy help work primarily geared to serving women versus “saving babies?” Pursued in these pages, the answer has broad implications for the wider study of social action and the pro-life movement, and for the future of the American abortion conflict.

"Crisis Pregnancy Centres" (CPCs) are anti-choice agencies that present themselves as unbiased medical clinics or counselling centres, and whose ostensible goal is to provide women with non-judgemental information on all their options when faced with an unintended pregnancy. However, CPCs are not medical facilities, most are Christian ministries, they generally will not refer clients for abortion or contraception, and many promote misinformation such as the existence of "Post-abortion Syndrome," which is not a medically recognized condition.
