Far from merely reinvigorating relativism, postmodernism has detected and expressed in our time a powerful nihilating process of which truth and reality itself are the final casualties; and with these morality and religion. Beginning from the theological reaches of philosophy, this book argues that gods played a crucial part in modern philosophy, even when it was most critical of them; that the dominant nihilism of Derrida is really an excessive and misleading outcome of a contemporary philosophy which could otherwise resonate with all that is best in our evolutionary image of the universe; that moralists who turn to art in order to overcome the fact–value version of this deadly dualism do not thereby rule out religion; and that a Christian theology which recognises the evolutionary and historical conditions of faith and revelation is once again producing a theology that builds upon the best of contemporary philosophy and science.

Criticism Of Theological Reason written by Fernando Luis Canale and has been published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-09 with categories.

In the ongoing quest for Christian unity, theological controversies and confessional divisions continue to bar the way. In this work, Fernando Canale attempts to overcome Christianity's theological disagreements by placing theological reason-which unwittingly drives these contentions-under critical investigation. In A Criticism of Theological Reason Canale proposes that theology should undertake this investigation independently from previous philosophical interpretations of reason. Thus, a Criticism of Theological Reason requires a careful examination of (1) the phenomenological structure of reason, (2) its presuppositional conditions, and (3) the interpretation of Being as either time or timelessness, within the philosophical, theological, and biblical contexts. The philosophical context clarifies the function of reason in the construction of meaning and the role of the interpretations of Being in the functioning of reason. The theological context illustrates the way in which the classical and modern philosophical interpretations of reason have shaped the constitution of theological meanings (exegesis, creeds, and dogmatics). Finally, through an epistemological analysis of Exodus 3:14, Canale shows that the biblical interpretation of Being provides the necessary ground to free Christian theology from the philosophically originated Onto-theo-logical interpretations of reason replacing it with a biblically originated Theo-onto-logical interpretation of theological reason. Canale hopes that a clearer understanding of reason's workings in theological discourse-particularly the biblical interpretation of Being and reason-will help Christians surmount current theological controversies and foment the ultimate ecumenical goal of Christian unity.

As the pastor of an inner-city church in New York City, Timothy Keller has compiled a list of the most frequently voiced ‘doubts’ sceptics bring to his church, as well as the most important reasons for faith. In THE REASON FOR GOD, he addresses each doubt and explains each reason.Keller uses literature, philosophy, real-life conversations, and reasoning to explain how faith in a Christian God is a soundly rational belief, held by thoughtful people of intellectual integrity with a deep compassion for those who truly want to know the truth.

Return To Reason written by Kelly James Clark and has been published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990-03-22 with Philosophy categories.

Clark provides a penetrating critique of the Enlightenment assumption of evidentialism--that belief in God requires the support of evidence or arguments to be rational. His assertion is that this demand for evidence is itself both irrelevant and irrational. His work bridges the gap between technical philosopher and educated layperson.

My goal will be to describe the rationality of the Christian faith. Rationality is a contextual concept. Inasmuch as the context of the Christian faith is history, I will specify its rationality by setting the Christian faith in the context of history alone. In pursuing this goal I will necessarily be guided by a great variety of intellectual suggestions. Most refreshing of all to me as theologian is the realization that for probably the first time in the history of the church the formulations of theology must now be instructed by the historiographers more than by the philosophers. I expect to show how it comes about that Christians and non-Christians alike impute to Christianity absurdities which are not really there, and how these absurdities may evaporate and give way to solidly redemptive meaning when the question of Christian understanding is rigorously set within the logic of history. - Introduction.

Faith And Reason written by Steve Wilkens and has been published by InterVarsity Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-10 with Religion categories.

Life confronts us with an endless stream of questions. Some are trivial. But some draw us into the deepest dimensions of human inquiry, a place where our decisions have profound implications for life and faith. Is there a God, and if so, how can I know anything about who or what God is? Is the quest for truth an elusive dream? How should I live and what should I value? What happens at the end of my biological existence? These questions lead people of every creed and belief to consider important existential concepts. But many people wrestle with the relationship between faith and reason as they dig into the roots of this theological and philosophical pursuit. Does a shared interest in a common set of questions indicate that philosophy and theology are close kin and allies, or are they competitors vying for our souls, each requiring a loyalty that excludes the other? In this Spectrum Multiview volume Steve Wilkens edits a debate between three different understandings of the relationship between faith and reason, between theology and philosophy. The first viewpoint, Faith and Philosophy in Tension, proposes faith and reason as hostile, exclusive opposites, each dangerous to the integrity of the other. The second, Faith Seeking Understanding, suggests that faithful Christians are called to make full use of their rational faculties to aid in the understanding and interpretation of what they believe by faith. In the third stance, Thomistic Synthesis, natural reason acts as a handmaiden to theology by actively pointing people toward salvation and deeper knowledge of spiritual truths. Bringing together multiple views on the relationship between faith, philosophy and reason, this introduction to a timeless quandary will help you navigate, with rigor and joy, one of the most significant discussions of the Christian community. Spectrum Multiview Books offer a range of viewpoints on contested topics within Christianity, giving contributors the opportunity to present their position and also respond to others in this dynamic publishing format.

Revelation Reason And Reality written by Joris Geldhof and has been published by Peeters Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Philosophy categories.

This study provides an in-depth analysis of the relationship between modernity and Christianity. The author argues that the notion of revelation is eminently reasonable and indissolubly connected with being and reality. He takes Jaspers' philosophy of religion as representative of the 'classical' modern critique and gives it its due. He then takes a step backward, so to speak, and by means of a consideration of the history of ideas, seeks to rehabilitate the Christian understanding of revelation. To do this, he draws upon Schelling's remarkable philosophy of revelation and Baader's much less familiar speculative dogmatics. However, this study is much more than a profound philosophical and theological account of the thought of Jaspers, Schelling and Baader. It is above all an eloquent defence of the plausibility and intelligibility of what Christians have always believed. In fact, the author makes a compelling case for the claim that revelation is 'that without which Christianity cannot be thought'.
