Love follows on esteem; we love things in proportion; to the value we set upon them. I have just spoken of the worth of crosses, and this little work abounds in motives most capable of making us perceive their value and urging us to love them. But let me say, in one word, what may carry absolute conviction to the mind, as to the obligation that lies upon us of having a love for crosses. Jesus, God-Man, loved them: therefore they are lovable. He loved them with an ardour inconceivable: therefore they ought to be the objects of our greatest affection.
