Praise for the earlier edition: "Students of modern American literature have for some years turned to Fifteen Modern American Authors (1969) as an indispensable guide to significant scholarship and criticism about twentieth-century American writers. In its new form--Sixteenth Modern American Authors--it will continue to be indispensable. If it is not a desk-book for all Americanists, it is a book to be kept in the forefront of the bibliographical compartment of their brains."--American Studies

A Family Outing In The Atlantic written by Jill Schinas and has been published by Imperator Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-11 with Offshore sailing categories.

When she set off to cross the Atlantic as part of a delivery crew, Jill Dickin Schinas had no idea that she was embarking on a whole new life, but within a week of setting out she and the skipper were making plans for a journey to Cape Horn. One year later the couple were on their way but had detoured up the Amazon to get married. Two years after that they were crossing the Atlantic again, this time from the Caribbean and this time with the ship's company enlarged by the addition of a two year old son and a babe in arms. Together the little family then headed directly for the Falkland Islands and the southern tip of South America - travelling via the Bahamas, the Azores, Portugal, the Canaries, Cape Verde, Senegal, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Sao Tome and Principe, Uruguay, Argentina, and various tenanted and untenanted islets and lumps of rock cast adrift in the Atlantic Ocean. Seven years after setting out, they almost reached their destination... On the face of it, this book is a travelogue, but it is also a portrait of the cruising lifestyle- the hand-to-mouth, alternative lifestyle, not the early-retirement luxury cruise. Yes, we were bound for Cape Horn... in as much as we had a destination, this indeed was it. But we were in no great hurry, and even this goal was viewed as little more than a staging post on our journey, for we meant to journey indefinitely. Truly, it was not a place but a lifestyle which we were setting forth to find. The family's adventures range from fighting gales and battling with immigration officials, to exploring uncharted African waters and abandoning ship to board a chopper via the winch cable. There is much in here that will beof value to other yachtsmen and other travellers, and heaps which will appeal to armchair voyagers and to families seeking to turn away from the nine-to-five motorway and tread a road of their own. Contains 31 pen-and-ink drawings and cartoons. Includes a brief glossary for people not conversant with sailing terminology. By the author of Kids in the Cockpit (a guide to sailing and cruising with children). The Schinas family are talented people. Theres nothing on the planet that Nick cant fix, while Jill is an artist of character. The children are developing in the same mould, but the overriding feature of all their lives and the guiding spirit of this book, is their self-sufficiency and courage to make their own choices, come fair weather or foul. Casting fate to the ocean winds without visible means of support in the third millennium demands a lot more guts than ever it did thirty years ago. Keeping going, despite producing three fine children and surviving a capsize off the Falklands that ended on the winch cable of an RAF helicopter, shows the true spirit of seafaring. TOM CUNLIFFE

By Motor To The Golden Gate written by Emily Post and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-06-28 with Transportation categories.

In 1915, journalist Emily Post set out from New York to investigate whether it was possible to drive comfortably across the country to San Francisco in an automobile. This is a reprint of Post’s only travel book, originally published by Collier’s Weekly seven years before she became famous for her book on etiquette. It describes her travels with her cousin Alice and her Harvard undergraduate son as they played the American tourists from Niagara Falls to cave dwellings near Santa Fe. A first-hand account of elite automotive travel before the process was democratized after World War I, it also shows the history of the southwest, particularly in the myths that made towns such as Santa Fe “authentic” tourist destinations, and provides contemporary comments on class and ethnicity. A new introduction includes a biographical sketch of Post and explains the context of her journey in the heroic age of motoring. Accompanying the text are many original photographs, sketch maps showing the route, and Post’s meticulous daily lists of expenditure, a valuable historical document showing the price of everything from car repairs to tips. New to this addition are explanatory footnotes and an appendix giving the miles Post traveled each day, noting the cities of departure and destination and the hotel for each night.

The Rolling Stones's first fame and the notorious drug busts that led to his enduring image as an outlaw folk hero. Tax exile in France, wildfire tours of the U.S., isolation and addiction. Falling in love with Patti Hansen. Estrangement from Jagger and subsequent reconciliation. This bibliography extends the work of Stanley's first volume, The Foreign Critical Reputation of F. Scott Fitzgerald: An Analysis and Annotated Bibliography, to the final two decades of the 20th century. It includes literature from the former countries of the USSR, Romania, India, and Canada, as well as countries that were covered in the first volume, such as Britain, France, Italy, Germany, and Japan. One of the major findings that emerges is that Fitzgerald's poetic prose is extremely difficult to translate, but new translations continue to appear. The introduction to this volume provides a synthesis of Fitzgerald scholarship abroad at the turn of the 21st century and points to new directions already suggested that may represent challenges to current scholarship. An extended analysis introduces each chapter. Each chapter also includes a chronological list of translations and editions of Fitzgerald's work from his earliest appearances in print to those appearing in 2000. The most substantial section of each chapter features fairly detailed annotations of monographs, collections, book chapters, essays, conference papers, articles, reviews, and school editions. This compilation will intrigue anyone interested the work of F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Although F. Scott Fitzgerald remains one of the most recognizable literary figures of the twentieth century, his legendary life - including his tempestuous romance with his wife and muse Zelda - continues to overshadow his art. However glamorous his image as the poet laureate of the 1920s, he was first and foremost a great writer with a gift for fluid, elegant prose. This introduction reminds readers why Fitzgerald deserves his preeminent place in literary history. It discusses not only his best-known works, The Great Gatsby (1925) and Tender Is the Night (1934), but the full scope of his output, including his other novels and his short stories. This book introduces new readers and students of Fitzgerald to his trademark themes, his memorable characters, his significant plots, the literary modes and genres from which he borrowed, and his inimitable style.
