This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1843 edition. Excerpt: ... 179 REMARKS ON THE ORANGE. From Professor Martin. Tue Citrus Aurantium, or orange, has long maintained a very respectable place in the Materia Medica. The sort principally employed in medicine is the Seville orange, the juice of which is well known to be a grateful acid liquor, which, by allaying heat, quenching thirst, and promoting various excretions, proves of considerable use in febrile and inflammatory disorders: it is also considered as a powerful antiseptic, and of great efficacy in preventing and curing the scurvy. The juice of the China orange possesses the same qualities, in an inferior degree. The acid of oranges, by uniting with the bile, is said to take off its bitterness; and hence Dr. Cullen thinks it is probable that acid fruits taken in, are often useful in obviating the disorders that might arise from the redundancy of bile, and perhaps, from the acrid quality of it. On the other hand, if the acids are in greater quantity than can be, or are properly corrected by the bile present, they seem, by some union with that fluid, to acquire a purgative quality that brings on diarrhoea and the cholic pains, that accompany the operation of every purgative. Not only the juice, but the rind or peel of the Seville orange is of considerable efficacy in medicine; since, besides its use as a stomachic, it has been much celebrated in intermittent fevers; and in testimony of its efficacy in the most obstinate agues, we find several authorities cited by Professor Murray. It has also been used as a powerful remedy in Menorrhagia, and in immoderate uterine evacuations; and for its effects in these disorders, we have not only the assertions of foreign physicians, but also those of Drs. Whytt and Hamilton. It gives out its flavour and taste...

The Three Colonies Of Australia New South Wales Victoria South Australia written by Samuel Sidney and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1852 with Australia categories.

"Samuel Sidney developed an interest in the Australian colony after the emigration of his brother John to New South Wales. Samuel and John established the magazine Sidney's Emigrant Journal, and worked together on two books concerning Australian emigration. The present work is an excellent description of Australia's contemporary state, where Samuel Sidney is clearly influenced by both Caroline Chisholm and Alexander Harris. He argues that the Australian colonies are ideal for working class emigration. Already in the introduction it becomes clear that Sidney is very anti-Wakefield, which makes it an important document in the debate between competing proposals for emigration. Apparently Sidney was very well-informed, he had access to otherwise inaccessible primary sources, and the verbatim transcripts add considerably to the book's value. Sidney's work is a full guide, giving excessive and detailed information on one of the most interesting world-regions."--Abebooks website.
