"The Cutter's Practical Guide" being the present acknowledged Standard System of Cutting at the Tailor and Cutter Office and the System taught to the Students at our Academy, it has, in a variety of forms and adaptations, been laid before the members of the tailoring trade. The cordial reception it has met has induced us to develop both the System and its applications, and prepare these for publication in more permanent form. Part One has already appeared, in which the System is adapted more particularly to Youths' and Juvenile Garments. A promise was then made that Part Two, embracing every Style and Class of Gents' Body Coats, would ultimately be published. The present work will be valued, not only for its application to ordinary coats, but by many more because it embraces many garments which in most trades are regarded special and unusual. Among these we may reckon Military, Naval, and Livery garments, with other classes of official and non-official dress, which the head of every respectable firm is liable to be called upon to make. The work throughout will be found thoroughly practical in its mode of representing and dealing with the various styles and classes of garments. Everything superfluous is studiously avoided. The work is prepared for practical Cutters and for everyday use, which will be greatly facilitated by the large clear type and equally clear engraving of the Plates. We feel confidence in placing it in the hands of our many patrons.

The work we have now completed, which will be placed before the members of an intelligent profession, is essentially the outcome of practical experience in the high-class livery trade. But as the experience of one on so wide a topic as all kinds of Liveries must, of necessity, be of a limited nature, we have gladly availed ourselves of a large circle of trade friends, many of whom are engaged in some of the most noted Livery trades in this great City of London. Many of these have materially helped in the preparation of this work, for which we extend to them our hearty thanks, feeling assured that the ideas and hints gained from such sources have such a practical bearing on the subject of Liveries, that the value of the work has been largely enhanced thereby. We have spared neither trouble nor pains to make this work as complete as possible, and trust it will supply a feeling of want in tailoring establishments.

The importance and necessity of just such a work as this on Economy in Cutting has found ample proof in the disposal of the First Edition in less than one month, in a Second Edition being again exhausted, and in our now being called upon to introduce a Third. Such a work is bound to be popular, its advantages come so closely home to every cutter, and we are pleased to record that the efforts of both Author and Publisher have been so fully appreciated. From no other publishing firm has emanated so many works relating to cutting, fitting, and practical tailoring, and so much is the time and attention of cutters devoted to these features of their profession, that the matter of Economy in Cutting is, in many cases, perhaps, comparatively a secondary consideration. Tis true, that in the cutting of a garment, saving a quarter of material is of small importance when compared with its good or bad fit. But where, from experience, or the use of our Tailor and Cutter Reliable Model and Special Patterns, the fit may be pretty well assured, even a quarter of material on each coat cut would very soon bulk to a tolerably large amount. At the present time, when competition runs so high and prices must be cut so fine, it became forcibly impressed upon us that a work might very advantageously be entirely devoted to ECONOMY IN CUTTING. We had little difficulty in selecting an author of thorough practical experience for this work: Mr. Falconer, having devoted special attention to the matter of Economy. The completeness with which Mr. Falconer has done his work, will be found in the fact of its containing no less than thirty-six Plates illustrating different lays, ranging from one to four garments on each lay or illustration. The Tables describe the Plates; giving the garment or garments, their sizes, and the quantities of material from which they can very comfortably be cut.

The confidence with which this work was first introduced has been well justified by the result - a very large edition having been disposed of. Very rarely, if ever, has a work so comprehensive been published in connection with the art of cutting. Though nominally a work on Juvenile Cutting, it embraces nearly every garment made by tailors. Besides systems for and treatises on Trousers and Veats, systems for Morning Coats and Dress Coats, it also deals with Military Garments, Liveries, and many other garments, all worked out by a system which has now become well-nigh universally popular, a unique feature of the work being its beautifully engraved illustrations and diagrams. We have had very many indications that the work is highly appreciated by all who have procured it, and many testimonies might be recorded if that were necessary. This Third Edition has been prepared in all its original completeness. With such a work in their possession, neither the inexperienced student nor the cutter in full practice should have any difficulty producing any of the garments treated and illustrated in this work.

It is now about three years since we added a new part to "The Cutter's Practical Guide Systems" in the form of a Work on ladies' tailor-made garments. Not only has a large Edition been disposed of, but a number of the styles which were then popular are now out of date. In preparing this new Edition, a number of what are now regarded as old styles are deleted, and the new and popular styles of the period take their place. The Work is based on the "Guide" System, and was originally prepared to meet a two-fold want or demand - an instructor and guide to the production of all the new and popular styles in tailor-made garments; and also the demand for such a work by the Practical Guide System. The Work itself will bear testimony to its scope, and the way in which every current, as well as new style of Ladies' Tailor-made Garment is treated and illustrated. Here we have the systems for producing the garments, each illustrated by beautifully engraved diagrams; and there is, further, the finished garments, illustrated upon artistically engraved figures. The Work thus presents a completeness which renders it an invaluable acquisition to the ladies' cutter. We doubt not but this new and latest Work will fully sustain the character we have already attained by the Works now being published at the TAILOR AND CUTTER Office.

Once again we have written our ideas on Trouser Cutting. The system herein described is so simple that the veriest novice may learn it and cut smart-fitting garments by it after a few hours' study; but at the same time embracing problems so difficult that many of them still remain unsolved. We trust and believe this work will be found an advance on all our previous efforts. The Essay which won the Federation Prize was our first attempt, and of this the Secretary of the Federation wrote: - "The very exhaustive nature of the first part of this elaborate essay is in itself an excellent work upon Trouser Cutting in every shape and from; added to this, the elaborate treatment of objects with so many excellent diagrams completes a work upon cutting that has no rival." As edition after edition was sold out, we revised and enlarged upon the principals there laid down, and now, after a lapse of fourteen years, we have remodelled the system, greatly improving it in certain directions, simplifying it where possible, and illustrating its application to a large number of styles never before treated in this way. If the verdict of the trade on our first effort was a favourable one, we have little doubt it will be equally appreciative of this one, which not only contains the results of the research and experience of our younger years, but also the fruit of the maturer thought of added years and enlarged experience. This work, whilst being complete in itself, and thoroughly exhausting its own theme forms part of a series of books treating of every phase of a cutter's experience, by the aid of which we hope to place in the hands of the young man who aspires to a position in the cutting room, a book which will supply him with information of a practical and helpful character under every circumstance of his professional life.

We now introduce another instalment of our work - "The Cutters' Practical Guide," in which we endeavour to embody the result of experience, observation and careful study. Our emanations in this Series of works may not be perfect - we do not claim they are, but we have the satisfaction of knowing that they are - all of them - beneficial to very many Cutters, who bear willing testimony to the benefits they derive from their use. We trust this work on Overgarments for all sorts and classes of men may be found equally helpful to those who are treading the same path we have trod. We are earnestly desirous of helping such, by placing in their hands materials which will better fit them for the discharge of the duties devolving upon them in their different spheres. Thus we shall help in some measure to raise the status of our trade. Recent developments in the Art and Science of Cutting have rendered it possible to produce garments correct in fit and excellent in style. This Art has, however, yet to be acquired, and it is our ambition to contribute by this Series of works, a medium by which this noblest of all Arts can be acquired. We trust as we doubt not, that the same success will attend this latest Part, as continues to attend the previous ones.

The bravest thing in war is a good retreat, and the cleverest thing in cutting is altering a bad fitting garment in such a way as to make it a good one. Who of us has not felt at a loss what to do when some unexpected difficulty has faced us, and how much at such times we have welcomed the advice of a friend. This work has been got up to prove just such a friend to every cutter in difficulty, and to help him in a practical way to overcome that which stands between him and success. This work is necessarily rather disjointed in its character, as it aims at describing, illustrating, and providing a remedy for most of the defects usually met with; so that if it lacks apparent continuity, we trust the diversity of subjects it treats will meet every necessity. The defects of Trousers are fully dealt with in Part III of the "Cutter's Practical Guide," and these together will, we trust, throw some light on every puzzling defect the cutter usually meets with.

After a historical overview, Seligman approaches his subject chronologically, listing items by century through 1799, then by decade. In this section, he deals with works on flat patterning, draping, grading, and tailoring techniques as well as on such related topics as accessories, armor, civil costumes, clerical costumes, dressmakers’ systems, fur, gloves, leather, military uniforms, and undergarments. Seligman then devotes a section to those American and English journals published for the professional tailor and dressmaker. Here, too, he includes the related areas of fur and undergarments. A section devoted to journal articles features selected articles from costume- and noncostumerelated professional journals and periodicals. The author breaks these articles down into three categories: American, English, and other. Seligman then devotes separate sections to other related areas, providing alphabetical listings of books and professional journals for costume and dance, dolls, folk and national dress, footwear, millinery, and wigmaking and hair. A section devoted to commercial pattern companies, periodicals, and catalogs is followed by an appendix covering pattern companies, publishers, and publications. In addition to full bibliographic notation, Seligman provides a library call number and library location if that information is available. The majority of the listings are annotated. Each listing is coded for identification and cross-referencing. An author index, a title index, a subject index, and a chronological index will guide readers to the material they want. Seligman’s historical review of the development of publications on the sartorial arts, professional journals, and the commercial paper pattern industry puts the bibliographical material into context. An appendix provides a cross-reference guide for research on American and English pattern companies, publishers, and publications. Given the size and scope of the bibliography, there is no other reference work even remotely like it.
