"Beth Brinkmann is not a little girl anymore, but not quite a young woman. Raised in a good home by loving parents in a comfortable little southern town where everyone knows everyone else, she realizes she has a good life. But there are growing pains. Some are small, like trying to adapt to waves of new kids at a different junior high. Others are deeply moving, such as watching the mother of a close friend suffer from multiple sclerosis. Beth, however, has the moxie of her father. She overcomes her fear of dogs, finds the courage to serve as mascot of the Mimosa High School football team, and learns to make friends of all ages (including an unlikely one who encourages her budding talent as an artist). And as the bond between father and daughter deepens, Beth is even able to provide Max with some much-needed insight into the difficult relationship he continues to have with his own elderly father, Josef."--Taken from front flap of book cover.

“An astonishingly beautiful book. The best gay novel written by anyone of our generation.”—Harper’s “Through the sweat and haze of longing come piercing insights – about the closeness of gay male friendship, about the vanity and imperfections of men. The more one reads the novel, we realise that what Holleran has given us is our very own queer (queerer?) Great Gatsby: its decadence, its fear, its violence, its ecstasy, its transience.”—The Guardian Andrew Holleran’s landmark novel of a young man's search for love and companionship in New York’s emerging gay world in the 1970s, with a new introduction by Garth Greenwell. Young, astonishingly beautiful, and tired of living a lie, Anthony Malone trades life as a seemingly straight small-town lawyer for the decadence of New York’s emerging gay scene—an odyssey that takes him from Manhattan’s Everard baths and after hour discos, to lavish orgies on Fire Island and parks after dark. Rescuing Malone from a possessive lover and shepherding him through his immersion in this life of fierce joys and cheap truths is the flamboyant Sutherland, a high-camp quintessential queen. But for Malone, the endless city nights and Fire Island days are close to burning out, and despite Sutherland’s abundant attentiveness and glittering world-weary wisdom, Malone soon realizes what he is truly looking for may not be found in these beautiful places, where life is crowded, and people are forever outrunning their own desires and death.

The Dance Between written by Susan Ioannou and has been published by Opal Editions this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-27 with Poetry categories.

The Dance Between is a suite of spare and striking poems about women, in various stages of life’s rhythms. Susan Ioannou’s epigram speaks of the moment between “what you once were, / and what you are now becoming” as being that dance. The poems span women’s lives, past and present, following common threads that are both personal and universal. The three sections group poems according to women in history and in the poets’ personal history. In the first section, “Out Front”, Ioannou sketches many profiles of women artists who have influenced the narrator. Part 2, “The Fallen”, follows tragic narratives of women’s loss and loneliness. The third part, “The Stars Wait”, comprises poems about women’s rites of passage, epiphanies, and coming of age. Many poems are collages of female figures, mosaics of memories, word portraits, and personal sketches. Poetic portraits range from landlord to sculptor, Latin dancer to war bride, babies to grandmas. Often sculpture is a metaphor—for women’s lives and bodies, sculpted by history, by others, by time and culture. “An acre of earth / or inside our heads / where do we wander, describe what is real?” There are portraits of domestic artistry, communing with nature, and making something out of nothing. These poems reflect on how some things change and some are timeless in the lives of women. There is simplicity of image and setting; poems are spare and paint pictures with brushstrokes. “We look through illusion, / permit time’s brush its stroke.” Often poems are seen through the artists’ perspective, and are shot through with light—light within people and in the memorable glints of brightness of place. “Between our words, warmth / hovers thick with light.” There are tragic stories of survivors and war brides, of prejudice and powerful suppressive practices, with hints of tragedy and loss, yet balanced with tragedy and loss are poems of new beginnings: fledgling ballerinas and a golf lesson, first writing workshops and first connections, as well as resilience. Despite dark images, the narrator “uncurls poems towards the light.” In the final section, women move towards empowerment and self-realization. In the end, each woman creates “a revised ending for herself.” Ioannou moves from specific to the general, from personal to the universal, from loss to learning. Like the mentioned cross-stitch samplers and quilts of the pioneer days, these poems weave images and samples of women in Canadian life. “Loneliness, she knows / can thicken drop by drop, / and choke the spirit down.” Domestic scenes are often warm, in contrast to nature scenes often fierce, struggling “to wed you with old earth.” Often there is the undertone of longing and yearning, yet resilience and light shine through overall. The poet explores opposites, and not just the tension between them, but, as the title suggests, the lively dance between, “never to be known, and so, / unable to be forgotten. -- Review by Kate Marshall Flaherty, published in Verse Afire, January 2021

Dance and Light examines the interconnected relationship between movement and design, the fluid partnership that exists between the two disciplines, and the approaches that designers can take to enhance dance performances through lighting design. The book demystifies lighting for the dancer and helps designers understand how the dancer/choreographer thinks about their art form, providing insight into the choreographer’s process and exploring how designers can make the most of their resources. The author shares anecdotes and ideas from an almost 50-year career as a lighting designer, along with practical examples and insights from colleagues, and stresses the importance of clear communication between designers, choreographers, and dancers. Attention is also given to the choreographer who wants to learn what light can do to help enhance their work on stage. Written in short, stand-alone chapters that allow readers to quickly navigate to areas of interest, Dance and Light is a valuable resource for lighting design classes wishing to add a section on dance lighting, as well as for choreography classes who want to better equip young artists for a significant collaborative partnership.

Dance With Demons written by Greg Lawrence and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-05-07 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

The first biography of the celebrated Broadway and Hollywood choreographer and director—a complex man of extraordinary genius and overwhelming demons. His work on such legendary shows as The King and I, West Side Story, Gypsy, Funny Girl, and Fiddler on the Roof made him one of the most influential and creative forces in the history of American theater. His collaborators, friends, and enemies were among the greatest celebrities of stage and screen, including Barbra Streisand, Bette Davis, Stephen Sondheim, Natalie Wood, Montgomery Clift, and Mary Martin. His brilliant contribution to the American Ballet Theater and the New York City Ballet established him as one of the century’s great choreographic masters of the form. But in 1998, Jerome Robbins died a haunted man. All of his life, he was tortured by private demons: his conflicted feelings about his bisexuality and his Judaism; his bitter relationship with his parents; his betrayals of others during the McCarthy hearings; and a demanding perfectionism that bordered on the sadistic. Now, this groundbreaking biography, based on hundreds of interviews with friends, family, and colleagues, provides the first complete portrait of the man and the artist—a harrowing, heartbreaking, and triumphant work as complicated and fascinating as the legend himself.

Stephen and Mark leave their homes in the country to begin their university studies. One becomes absorbed in his books, and in his relationship with the beautiful Anna; the other's focus in on more distracting pursuits. Further pressure on their friendship comes from the expectations of their long-settled immigrant families. The recurring themes of Hilde Knörr's writing are here: the subtleties of human relationships and the equally subtle and unpredictable workings of destiny; reconciliation with others and with oneself. Intertwined among these is Knorr's love of music and art and of the natural environment. This book completes Knorr's three-part chronicle of four generations of Melbourne-based and country-living families.
