Susan was born to a mother cold and pretentious, and a father distant and, as she recalls, "most likely borderline autistic." Not the best nurturing environment for a gifted child, so she rebelled: flunking out of school; befriending those her mother would have considered "undesirables;" basically, living a life completely at odds to the one that would have ordinarily been "expected."But it was those early experiences that showed Susan how difficult life was for so many; it instilled in her a passionate zeal to help "the marginalized, the forgotten and the disenfranchised." And this interest in social justice has been "present" throughout her entire adult life.It is no wonder Susan as the choreographer, the painter, the writer, the dancer, has consistently used all her art forms as instruments to promote human rights and the concept of equality.Nowhere has that combination of creativity and activism been more compelling, and more successful, than with her teaching modern dance for the past 20 years to men imprisoned within the NYS correctional system. Her dance company, named "Figures In Flight," has garnered much critical and professional acclaim. A documentary about her work, entitled "The Game Changer," won Best Documentary Short at both the Harlem and Cannes film festivals. But the ultimate award for Susan's lifetime work must be how those men felt, aloft and moving, dancing to Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come." We can only "Imagine." But Susan knows.

The volume also contains Crouch's seminal review of Reconstruction historiography, "Unmanacling Texas Reconstruction: A Twenty-Year Perspective." The introductory pieces by Arnoldo De Leon and Larry Madaras recapitulate Barry Crouch's scholarly career and pay tribute to his stature in the field of Reconstruction history.

Freedom to Dance is the story of a remarkable Dutch dance teacher, Boukje van Zon, whose influence is still felt throughout New Zealand more than 50 years after starting Van Zon School of Creative Dancing in West Auckland. As a teenager in Friesland, the Netherlands, Boukje discovered that dance and movement could reach deep into a person's being and bring about personal growth. She was part of a European movement where pre-conceived ways of thinking in arts and teaching were being overturned. Boukje brought these innovations with her when she migrated to New Zealand with husband Maurice in the 1950s. From her new home in Titirangi, she established a dance school with a difference. Children did not begin with steps, rather they explored the freedom of movement. Soon their mothers asked for a class of their own so they could explore space, time and movement; then as her reputation spread, adult students established a performance group and produced avant garde works. And so the Van Zon School of Creative Dancing expanded exponentially across Auckland. Boukje was ahead of her time. She embraced all realms of the dance voice and drew out and nurtured the creative impulses of each student. She was also part of her time and rode the crest of social change that was transforming New Zealand from a deeply conservative society to a liberal, open one. Boukje's story embraces the turbulence of 20th century political conflict, nationhood, cultural identity and creative endeavour. It offers snapshots of Europe in the 1930s and 1940s, and New Zealand in the 1950s and 1960s as seen through the lens of a Dutch migrant. Freedom to Dance explores a time and place through the creative lens of a woman of her time, whose voice transcends time.

"Winner of the National Bestseller and Book of the Year prizes in Russia, The Dancer from Khiva, is the unflinchingly honest, deceptively plainspoken memoir of Bibish, a Central Asian woman who came of age in a rigidly Islamic village in Uzbekistan. In a narrative that flows like a late-night confession, Bibish recounts her story. Born into an impoverished family, she was named 'Hadjarbibi' in honor of her grandfather's pilgrimage to Mecca. The holy name, however, did not protect her from unspeakable abuse at the hands of the men in her village. She knew instinctively to keep her experience a secret rather than risk further punishment, but soon her love for Uzbeki dancing - prohibited by Islamic custom - caused her to be beaten by her brothers and ostracized from her community. Dreaming of freedom, Bibish fled. The Dancer from Khiva is a testament to her fierce will and courage: the searing, fast-paced tale of a woman who risked everything to follow her dreams, break her culture's silence, and tell her shocking story."--BOOK JACKET.
