Excerpt from The Dardanelles Campaign The worst apprehensions of the Central Powers would then have been fulfilled. Blockaded by the Allied fleets in the Adriatic, and by the British fleet in the Channel and the North Sea, they would have found themselves indeed surrounded by an iron ring, and, so far as prophecy was possible, it seemed likely that the terms which our Alliance openly professed as our objects in the war might have been obtained in the spring of 1916. The subsidiary and more immediate consequences of success in the Dardanelles, such as the supply of munitions to Russia, and of Ukrainian wheat to our Alliance, were also to be considered. Excerpt from The Dardanelles The contest for the control of the Dardanelles in 1915 brought about a struggle by sea and land which was in the main conducted quite independently of occurrences in other theatres of the Great War. That being so, it can in a military and naval sense be treated as a distinct incident in the world-wide disturbance. It constituted a campaign by itself. Its course, nevertheless, was appreciably affected by belligerent events elsewhere, by the military. situation in Western Europe on various dates - by the progress of the conflict on the western and south-eastern borders of Russia, for instance, by acute strategical developments in Serbia, and even by martial proceedings in the vicinity of the Nile Delta and in Mesopotamia. Such influence as the conditions in distant regions exerted over the fight for the Straits took, however, almost entirely the form of diverting to other fields military and naval resources which, but for this, might have been profitably employed in and about the Gallipoli Peninsula. It was the Allies who especially suffered in this respect, and they suffered particularly on land. For, lack of troops and munitions was unquestionably one cause of their failure to wrest domination of the Hellespont out of the hands of the Turk. But the inadequacy of the means in respect to men and munitions placed at his disposal, which so shackled Sir I. Hamilton, were primarily - if not indeed wholly - due to the fact that men and munitions were urgently needed in other theatres of war and especially in France and Flanders. Excerpt from With the Fleet in the Dardanelles: Some Impressions of Naval Men and Incidents During the Campaign in the Spring of 1915 I do not recall your presence in the group which, after evening service on the Sunday before the war, watched the Yarmouth, crowded with the comple ments from our river gunboats, leave her moorings off the Bund and slip away through the fading light to meet the Fleet outside. Excerpt from The Dardanelles and Their Story The Significance of the Dardanelles When Turkey, egged on by Germany, blundered into war with the Powers of the Triple Entente, it was obvious that she was staking her continued existence as a nation on the result. It was equally certain that she presented the best object of attack among the hostile nations ranged against the Allied Powers. There was no surprise, therefore, when the official announcement was made in February that the forts of the Dardanelles had been attacked and bombarded by the fleets of the Allies, with the object of forcing a passage through the Straits and reducing Constantinople. Such an attack was possible only because of the remarkable naval strength of Great Britain. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from What of the Dardanelles?: An Analysis Is it odd that they are bewildered? The censorship is responsible for the peculiar and wrong attitude of the people of England towards their army. The fighting force is regarded in the light of a championship football team. It sports the colours and carries the hopes of England, while the great mass of the nation acts the part of audience. The army is treated as a detached organisa tion in which the man in the street has only the remote interest implied in paying taxes. In the present war this is woefully wrong. But the people are not to blame for such a point of view. It is not their fault if they are not alive to their responsibilities. The pernicious result can be laid to the charge of the censorship. Excerpt from Gallipoli Diary The Diary of a man who, like yourself, took part in the historic landing at Gallipoli, and was present on the Peninsula during the subsequent fighting, will, I know, be of interest to many besides myself. There are but few of us who, in those strenuous days, were able to keep diaries, and even fewer were those who had the gift of making of their daily entries a narrative that would be of interest to others. I should like to have time to write a Preface for this book of yours, giving the salient points, of our great adventure and the effect it had both on us and on the enemy. I should also have liked to have shown the influence that you and the Army Service Corps generally had on our operations by the successful manner in which you were able to keep the troops fed and supplied under circumstances of apparently insuperable difficulty. But being, as I am, in command of a big Army Corps on one of the most difficult parts of the Front, it is impossible for me to find any time for writing such a Preface. I can but wish your book the greatest success, and hope that it be widely read. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
