African American Religion offers a provocative historical and philosophical treatment of the religious life of African Americans. Glaude argues that the phrase, African American religion, is meaningful only insofar as it singles out the distinctive ways religion has been leveraged by African Americans to respond to different racial regimes in the United States. If it does not do this, he argues, then it is time we got rid of the phrase.

Black Magic written by Yvonne P. Chireau and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-11-20 with History categories.

Black Magic looks at the origins, meaning, and uses of Conjure—the African American tradition of healing and harming that evolved from African, European, and American elements—from the slavery period to well into the twentieth century. Illuminating a world that is dimly understood by both scholars and the general public, Yvonne P. Chireau describes Conjure and other related traditions, such as Hoodoo and Rootworking, in a beautifully written, richly detailed history that presents the voices and experiences of African Americans and shows how magic has informed their culture. Focusing on the relationship between Conjure and Christianity, Chireau shows how these seemingly contradictory traditions have worked together in a complex and complementary fashion to provide spiritual empowerment for African Americans, both slave and free, living in white America. As she explores the role of Conjure for African Americans and looks at the transformations of Conjure over time, Chireau also rewrites the dichotomy between magic and religion. With its groundbreaking analysis of an often misunderstood tradition, this book adds an important perspective to our understanding of the myriad dimensions of human spirituality.

The Spirit World written by Clarence Larkin and has been published by Ravenio Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1921 with Religion categories.

In this day of the revival of “Spiritism,” when no many, through the loss of loved ones in the “Great World War,” are longing to communicate with the dead, and are sorting to forbidden means to that end; a day in which science is trying to discover whether there is another world than this, and whether men live after death, and if so they can they communicate with the living, it seems timely that a book should be written to show what the Holy Scriptures have revealed of the “World of Spirits.” The Bible has much to say about the “Spirit World,” and if we will carefully search its pages we shall know all there is to be known in this life of the “World to Come.” For if men will not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded though one rose or came back from the dead. Luk 16:31. This book covers all phases of the “Spirit World.” It treats of the “Powers of Good and Evil,” of “The Under-world,” of “Satan,” the “Fallen Angels,” “Demonism,” the “Intermediate State,” and of Heaven and Hell, as well as the “Resurrection of the Body,” and the “Judgments” of the Righteous and Wicked. The prayer of the Author is that the Holy Spirit will use the book to free those who are entrapped in the net of “Spiritism,” and cause the curious and sorrowing to turn to the “Word of God” for help, and the answer to their questioning. This classic includes the following chapters: I. The Spirit World II. The Tri-Unity of God III. Satan IV. The Fallen Angels V. Demonism VI. The Underworld VII. The Spirits in Prison VIII. Natural Law in the Spirit World IX. The Relation of the Spirit World to the Natural World X. Man’s Relation to the Spirit-World XI. Soul Sleep XII. The Intermediate State XIII. Recognition and Relationship in the Spirit World XIV. The Final State XV. The Abolition of Death XVI. Spirit Transformation XVII. The Resurrection XVIII. The Resurrection Body XIX. The Judgments

Tales From The Haunted South written by Tiya Miles and has been published by UNC Press Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-12 with History categories.

In this book Tiya Miles explores the popular yet troubling phenomenon of "ghost tours," frequently promoted and experienced at plantations, urban manor homes, and cemeteries throughout the South. As a staple of the tours, guides entertain paying customers by routinely relying on stories of enslaved black specters. But who are these ghosts? Examining popular sites and stories from these tours, Miles shows that haunted tales routinely appropriate and skew African American history to produce representations of slavery for commercial gain. "Dark tourism" often highlights the most sensationalist and macabre aspects of slavery, from salacious sexual ties between white masters and black women slaves to the physical abuse and torture of black bodies to the supposedly exotic nature of African spiritual practices. Because the realities of slavery are largely absent from these tours, Miles reveals how they continue to feed problematic "Old South" narratives and erase the hard truths of the Civil War era. In an incisive and engaging work, Miles uses these troubling cases to shine light on how we feel about the Civil War and race, and how the ghosts of the past are still with us.

“Ruiz Zafón’s visionary storytelling prowess is a genre unto itself.”—USA Today Return to the mythical Barcelona library known as the Cemetery of Forgotten Books in this posthumous collection of stories from the New York Times bestselling author of The Shadow of the Wind and The Labyrinth of the Spirits. Bestselling author Carlos Ruiz Zafón conceived of this collection of stories as an appreciation to the countless readers who joined him on the extraordinary journey that began with The Shadow of the Wind. Comprising eleven stories, most of them never before published in English, The City of Mist offers the reader compelling characters, unique situations, and a gothic atmosphere reminiscent of his beloved Cemetery of Forgotten Books quartet. And a brilliant Catalan architect named Antoni Gaudí reluctantly agrees to cross the ocean to New York, a voyage that will determine the fate of an unfinished masterpiece. Imaginative and beguiling, these and other stories in The City of Mist summon up the mesmerizing magic of their brilliant creator and invite us to come dream along with him.

It is a strange fact that the more materialistic the age, the deeper the interest in spiritual questions. The vitality and persistence of the belief in the reality of the spiritual world is evidence of that hunger for the ideal, for God, of which the Psalmist speaks—“As the heart panteth after water brooks so panteth my soul after Thee, O God!” Through the passing centuries, we have come into a larger, nobler conception of the Universal Life, and our relations to that Life, in which we live, move, and have our being. Granting the existence of an “Eternal and Infinite Spirit, the Intellectual Organizer of the mathematical laws which the physical forces obey,” and conceiving ourselves as individualized points of life in the Greater Life, we are constrained to believe that we bear within us the undying spark of divinity and immortality. Evolution points to eternal life as the final goal of self-conscious spirit, else this mighty earth-travail, the long ages of struggle to produce man are utterly without meaning. Speaking of a future life, John Fiske, a leading American exponent of the doctrine of evolution, says (“The Destiny of Man”): “The doctrine of evolution does not allow us to take the atheistic view of the position of man. It is true that modern astronomy shows us giant balls of vapor condensing into fiery suns, cooling down into planets fit for the support of life, and at last growing cold and rigid in death, like the moon. And there are indications of a time when systems of dead planets shall fall in upon their central ember that was once a sun, and the whole lifeless mass, thus regaining heat, shall expand into a nebulous cloud like that with which we started, that the work of condensation and evolution may begin over again. These Titanic events must doubtless seem to our limited vision like an endless and aimless series of cosmical changes. From the first dawning of life we see all things working together toward one mighty goal, the evolution of the most exalted spiritual qualities which characterize Humanity. The body is cast aside and returns to the dust of which it was made. The earth, so marvelously wrought to man’s uses, will also be cast aside. So small is the value which Nature sets upon the perishable forms of matter! The question, then, is reduced to this: Are man’s highest spiritual qualities, into the production of which all this creative energy has gone, to disappear with the rest? Are we to regard the Creator’s work as like that of a child, who builds houses out of blocks, just for the pleasure of knocking them down? For aught that science can tell us, it may be so, but I can see no good reason for believing any such thing.”
