Few treatments of the death of Jesus Christ have made a point of accounting for the gruesome, degrading, public manner of his death by crucifixion, a mode of execution so loathsome that the ancient Romans never spoke of it in polite society. Rutledge probes all the various themes and motifs used by the New Testament evangelists and apostolic writers to explain the meaning of the cross of Christ. She shows how each of the biblical themes contributes to the whole, with the Christus Victor motif and the concept of substitution sharing pride of place along with Irenaeus's recapitulation model.

Many Christians seek the meaning behind the death of Jesus Christ. In The Vicarious, Sacrificial, Atoning Death of Jesus Christ, author Fr. Steven Scherrer explores the impact of Jesus crucifixion and the benefits that we receive from his death. This collection of Biblical essays, garnered from sermon messages, looks at the mystery of the crucifixion from a variety of scripturally based points of view. These essays reflect on many aspects: [How Christs death establishes, upholds, and fulfills Gods law [How Christs death differs from that of all the martyrs [How profoundly Christ suffered [How Christ suffered the just punishment due to our sins [How Christs death ransoms us from death The Vicarious, Sacrificial, Atoning Death of Jesus Christ seeks to integrate Jesus atoning death into a personalistic understanding of the Trinity and explore its benefits to us. It comes as an affirmation of the New Testament doctrine that Jesus death was both vicarious and sacrificial, and that it saves those who believe in him from their sins, justifying, and making them into a new creation, resplendent in Gods sight.

The Death Of Christ written by John Knox and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-29 with Religion categories.

At the very center of the Christian faith stands the Cross. In order to believe in life as we want to live it, we may deny or forget or ignore the fact that the Cross happened. Or we may acknowledge it, but be so overwhelmed by its cruelty that we deny that life has meaning. Or we may accept both the Cross and life, thereby recognizing a higher and deeper dimension in human life than law can define or reason grasp. This third alternative is the theme of this study of the central event of the Cross - the death of Christ. Dr. Knox begins with a consideration of the Crucifixion in its historical setting. Then, in Part II, he considers its significance to Jesus himself, and in Part III he explores its significance to the Church. Examining the two New Testament views of the Atonement (victory and sacrifice) Dr. Knox concludes that although they are logically contradictory, both are actually necessary. We must regard these interpretations, he says, as the work of the One who moved through the ancient event to bring the Church itself into being. The final chapter is a powerful application of this view of the Cross to our lives today. All those who seek to find the meaning of life in terms of the Christian faith will find this discussion of the Cross both intellectually stimulating and spiritually satisfying.
