The Politics Of The Death Penalty In Countries In Transition written by Madoka Futamura and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-08-15 with Law categories.

The increase in the number of countries that have abolished the death penalty since the end of the Second World War shows a steady trend towards worldwide abolition of capital punishment. This book focuses on the political and legal issues raised by the death penalty in "countries in transition", understood as countries that have transitioned or are transitioning from conflict to peace, or from authoritarianism to democracy. In such countries, the politics that surround retaining or abolishing the death penalty are embedded in complex state-building processes. In this context, Madoka Futamura and Nadia Bernaz bring together the work of leading researchers of international law, human rights, transitional justice, and international politics in order to explore the social, political and legal factors that shape decisions on the death penalty, whether this leads to its abolition, reinstatement or perpetuation. Covering a diverse range of transitional processes in Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East, The Politics of the Death Penalty in Countries in Transition offers a broad evaluation of countries whose death penalty policies have rarely been studied. The book would be useful to human rights researchers and international lawyers, in demonstrating how transition and transformation, ‘provide the catalyst for several of interrelated developments of which one is the reduction and elimination of capital punishment’.

Who is Zhao Xun? For those around him, the answer to this question is unclear. In KMT-occupied Kunming, Yunnan Province, a mist of uncertainty has already filled the air, and false names have become the norm. With the city’s liberation at the hands of the Communist Army, this trend only intensifies. My Country, My Blood traces the life story of former KMT officer who spends his entire life living in Yunnan. It relays stories of opera troupes operating behind the frontlines, student groups resisting tyrannical governments, and the reshuffling of the social order that followed the Chinese Civil War. Grand in scope, My Country, My Blood pushes through the period of establishing a new government clear through to the time of healing marked by China’s Opening Up to the world. Along the way, you will slowly piece together the puzzle of shifting pseudonyms, discovering who the characters actually are and the complicated, twisting paths that bring them together amid the throes of war. Painting a vibrant picture of how China came to be what it is today, My Country, My Blood is a story of war, revolution, and healing. As gripping as it is informative, this piece of fiction is truly a gem of modern Chinese literature.

Have You Seen My Country Lately written by Jerry Doyle and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-04-03 with Political Science categories.

"I’ve seen my country lately. Frankly, I don’t like what I see. Nevertheless, it’s not too late to restore the great and unique wonder that is the United States. We are the beacon of hope for the world, and we will remain so as long as we stand up for our principles." In keeping with his no-holds-barred on-air style, conservative radio talk show host Jerry Doyle has the guts to ask the tough questions about the state of our nation today. In this informative, entertaining, and challenging narrative, he urges Americans to take back the things that make our country great, and delivers his hard-hitting and oftentimes humorous spin on: • ECONOMIC FASCISM—the rapid government domination that began with the egregious takedown of GM • BAILOUTS—the missteps, wrong moves, and rules of salary caps, bank buy-ins, and bonuses that changed from day to day • EDUCATION—how our "everybody wins" obsession is destroying teaching and fostering an obnoxious self-entitlement trend • THE OBAMA PRESIDENCY—will American capitalism survive this administration? . . . and much more. If you like your politics straight up, with a commonsense chaser and a shot of dry wit, you’ll be galvanized and enlightened by Jerry Doyle—the man, his story, and his insights into America today.

Looking For My Country written by Robert Macneil and has been published by Nan A. Talese this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-12-18 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Renowned journalist and author of the international bestseller Wordstruck, Robert MacNeil reflects on a life lived between nations, and why he finally decided to call himself an American. Growing up in Halifax during World War II, it seemed to Robert MacNeil that nothing of significance ever happened in Canada. From his mother’s obsession with all things English (even the marmalade) to his own love for American music like Rhapsody in Blue, Canada seemed too small, too parochial for his ambitions. Moving to Britain in his mid-twenties, MacNeil was suddenly exposed to a country with thousands of years of history, extraordinary theatre and culture. But it was in America that MacNeil finally found his country -- America, a land of contrasts and possibilities. A journalist for NBC and later for PBS on the MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour, MacNeil was a witness to many of the current events that shaped the last century: the erection of the Berlin Wall, Kennedy’s election and assassination, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Watergate and finally September 11, 2001. As the well-respected and trenchant news reporter brought world issues to the American public, he discovered that his Canadian values and upbringing allowed him some valuable detachment and perspective. And when MacNeil returned to Nova Scotia after 40 years, he found his country of birth much changed -- multiculturalism and diversity had caused Canadian culture to blossom in his absence. With charm and warmth, but also with a piercing eye on the century, MacNeil looks at the meanings of patriotism, nationalism and home, and explains why he finally made the decision to become an American citizen. Excerpt from Looking for My Country I grew up in a nation trying to build a distinctive culture in an environment that constantly threatens extinction, physical from the north, and political/cultural from the south. Each fear, in its own way, reinforces the other. The inhospitality of the northern climate induces Canadians to drift southwards and the magnet of American material prosperity and opportunity reinforces that urge. Yet the fear of being swallowed, ingested by the American leviathan, makes Canadians draw back, shrinking from the smothering embrace, to find a source of national pride and identity in overcoming the natural human fear of perishing in frozen wastes. Peter Gzowski, the late, beloved CBC radio host, once ran a contest which produced this inspired response, “As Canadian as possible under the circumstances.”
