In this exciting and thought-provoking book, military historian Geoffrey Regan has selected fifty of the most decisive battles of world history. As the author explains, the decisiveness of these battles lies not only in the completeness of victory or defeat for either side, but also in the longer-term impact they have had on the course of history. The scope of the book is majestic. It starts with Salamis, where the Greeks put an end to Persian attempts to overwhelm their country. Other battles of the Ancient World include Zama, where Carthaginian power was finally crushed; Actium, which ushered in the Rome of the emperors; and Adrianople, which first demonstrated the potential of the mounted warrior to defeat the legions of Rome. Moving onto the Medieval World, famous battlessuch as Hastings and the fall of Constantinople - are set beside less well-known but equally crucial encounters such as Lechfeld and Ain Jalut. Then there are the great conflicts of the colonial age, from Plassey to Quebec, and battles such as Saratoga and Sedan that witnessed the birth of nations. From the present century, key engagements of the World Wars - including the Marne, Midway, El Alamein and Stalingrad - are featured, as are more recent conflicts whose reverberations are still very much with us - Dien Bien Phu, the Six Days War, and Operation Desert Storm. Geoffrey Regan not only examines the strategic context and long-term outcome of each battle, but also vividly brings to life the course of the fighting, the commanders and participants, and the significance of innovations in weaponry. Numerous maps help to explain tactics and strategy, while the many illustrations add a further dramatic dimension to this stimulating book.

Excerpt from Decisive Battles Since Waterloo: The Most Important Military Events In 1852 Professor (afterwards Sir Edward) Creasy published a book, which is well described by its title, "The Fifteen Decisive Battles of the World, from Marathon to Waterloo." Professor Creasy's work has passed through many editions, and has long since become a standard authority among historical students. In the belief that the decisive battles since Waterloo are worthy of record in a similar form, the author has ventured to prepare the volume, of which these lines are the preface. Creasy justly says: "It is probable, indeed, that no two historical inquirers would entirely agree in their lists of the decisive battles of the world," and it is of course still less likely that any unanimity of opinion could be found among historical students of the present day in the selection of the decisive battles since 1815. There is a wide difference of opinion concerning the battles which assured English supremacy in India; the battles which decided the result of the civil war in America; and concerning those which have repeatedly changed the political map of the valley of the Danube and the regions contiguous to it. Several of the twenty-five battles which are described in this volume could hardly be included if the list were subjected to the crucial test of Hallam in his comments upon the victory of Charles Martel, between Tours and Poictiers, over the Saracens. In speaking of that battle Hallam says: "It may justly be reckoned among those few battles of which a contrary event would have essentially varied the drama of the world in all its subsequent scenes." Newly illustrated throughout with contemporary maps, paintings and engravings, this is G. B. Malleson's best-selling book about how the British Empire won the jewel in its crown. Each chapter covers a decisive battle from 1746 to 1849, which finally led to the gradual annexation of India to the British Empire. The Battle of St Thome in 1746, between the French and the Nawab of the Carnatic, opened the infinite possibilities of trade and treasure in the Indian sub-continent to the Europeans. It also brought the military genius of Robert Clive of the British East India Company and Joseph-Francois Dupleix face to face, and from there followed over a decade of conflict between the French and the British, until Clive's decisive victory over the French at the Battle of Plassey in 1757. Also included, among others, is the Battle of Assaye in 1803 where Arthur Wellesley learnt his trade, the Battle of Bharatpur in 1805 between the British and the Maharaja Ranjit Singh, and the Battle of Sobraon in 1846, the final battle of the First Anglo-Sikh War. This excellent Victorian history of these decisive battles describes the causes, the complicated political alliances behind each encounter, the main protagonists, the strategies and tactics, and the final consequences of each conflict."

The British Raj at its height measured almost 2 million square miles of territory and counted more than 200 million people among its citizens. This land was truly the ‘Jewel’ of the British Empire, however the path to this dominance was punctuated by fierce and bloody fighting by the British and her Indian allies against numerous, native Nawabs, Princes and leaders across the patchwork kingdoms of India. These battles most often featured small numbers of British and sepoy troops facing off against huge numbers of Indian troops, where the fate of the Empire hung in the balance. Colonel Malleson uses his expert knowledge of India and his long military career there to survey and recounts the battles that shaped what would become the British Raj. The author obtained a cadetship in the Bengal infantry at the tender age of 17 in 1842, he served in India for over three decades in both military and civil appointments. He wrote many famous volumes on India and the country’s history; perhaps most famous of which were History of the Indian Mutiny, 1857-8, Akbar And The Rise Of The Mughals and History of the French in India.
