Excerpt from The Decline of Democratic Politics This task confronts political thought with an inescapable dilemma. What of the tradition is perennially true, and what is but the out growth of particular interests and circumstances? And what in the political experience of the contemporary world is the ephemeral product of historic accident, and what is a manifestation of the eter nal verities of politics? The history of political thought is the story of the gropings with which successive generations have searched for answers to these questions. They had to beware of two temptations which are indeed the horns of the dilemma: either to smother the contemporary world with obsolescent dogma or else to exchange the wisdom of the ages for the innovations of the age. Excerpt from Conditions of Progress in Democratic Government The responsibilities of citizenship must not be regarded as limited to voting, to the use of elec toral machinery, or to participation in political campaigns. These are simply methods to secure the expression of public Opinion which is the final authority. Opportunity and the responsibility which it measures, with respect to citizenship, are to be determined not merely by particular polit ical rights, but by one's relation to the ultimate power which upholds or changes constitutions, makes laws, fixes the quality of administration and assures or prevents progress. Excerpt from The History of Democracy: Considered as a Party Name and as a Political Organization Republicanism as a party name, and some dark stains upon its history. If so, it is the duty of some patriot to point them out. I shall content myself with exposing and commenting upon Democracy as a party name and organization. And I trust it will be by no means difficult to show that the word used as a party name or title has almost invariably proved to be, in practice, as far from the abstract or popular meaning of the word as the east is from the west, or as darkness is from light. It, then, this charge can be established from the history of Democracy, such a party ought not to exist, and cannot exist without endangering free institutions and the representative form of government. But if the charge be not well founded, or if it will apply as well to any other party or party name, then the benefits to arise from its investigation should stimulate patriots to enter upon the work. From such an investigation would likely come a truer estimation and correction of party abuses, and a higher elevation and purification of the means for maintaining free government and equal rights, and consequently greater security and safety for the people. But of all this the reader must judge as we proceed with these historical sketches. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Trading Democracy For Justice written by Traci Burch and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-08-21 with Political Science categories.

The United States imprisons far more people, total and per capita, and at a higher rate than any other country in the world. Among the more than 1.5 million Americans currently incarcerated, minorities and the poor are disproportionately represented. What’s more, they tend to come from just a few of the most disadvantaged neighborhoods in the country. While the political costs of this phenomenon remain poorly understood, it’s become increasingly clear that the effects of this mass incarceration are much more pervasive than previously thought, extending beyond those imprisoned to the neighbors, family, and friends left behind. For Trading Democracy for Justice, Traci Burch has drawn on data from neighborhoods with imprisonment rates up to fourteen times the national average to chart demographic features that include information about imprisonment, probation, and parole, as well as voter turnout and volunteerism. She presents powerful evidence that living in a high-imprisonment neighborhood significantly decreases political participation. Similarly, people living in these neighborhoods are less likely to engage with their communities through volunteer work. What results is the demobilization of entire neighborhoods and the creation of vast inequalities—even among those not directly affected by the criminal justice system. The first book to demonstrate the ways in which the institutional effects of imprisonment undermine already disadvantaged communities, Trading Democracy for Justice speaks to issues at the heart of democracy.

"For the first time since the end of the Cold War, the world is steadily becoming less democratic. Though the true culprits are dictators and counterfeit democrats, the West is often complicit in contributing to the global decline of democracy. In pursuit of short-term economic and political objectives, governments in Washington, London and Brussels ultimately make the world less prosperous and stable. As Brian Klaas argues in this ... new book, this is in nobody's interests, least of all Western democracies--it is time for a rethink. The Despot's Accomplice draws on interviews on the frontlines of the global struggle for democracy, from a poetry-reading, politician-kidnapping general in Madagascar, and Islamist torture victims in Tunisia, to Belarusian activists tailed by the KGB, and tea-sipping members of the Thai junta"--From publisher description.

"Historical accounts of democracy's rise tend to focus on ancient Greece and pre-Renaissance Europe. The Decline and Rise of Democracy draws from global evidence to show that the story is much richer--democratic practices were present in many places, at many other times, from the Americas before European conquest, to ancient Mesopotamia, to precolonial Africa. Delving into the prevalence of early democracy throughout the world, David Stasavage makes the case that understanding how and where these democracies flourished--and when and why they declined--can provide crucial information not just about the history of governance, but also about the ways modern democracies work and where they could manifest in the future."--

Excerpt from The Decline and Rise of the Consumer: A Philosophy of Consumer Cooperation The idea of this self-feeling of all persons is implicit in the concept of democracy and in the gospels of religion. The demo cratic rule that all men are equal is sometimes confused with the quite opposite idea that all men are the same and that any man can be substituted for any other so that his differences make no difference. The two are not at all the same. The demo cratic rule that all men are equal means that men's being dif ferent cannot be made a basis for special privilege or for the invidious advantage of one man over another; equality, under the democratic rule, is the freedom and opportunity of each individual to be fully and completely his different self. De mocracy means the right to be different. The gospels of religion propound the same notion when they say that all men are equal before God and that salvation is open to all alike. The discoveries of science confirm the positions of democracy and religion. To the Nature which the scientist studies, each of her multitudinous components, as it is in itself, apart from every thing else, endeavors on its own power to sustain its identity, to live and to grow. If it perishes it is not because Nature has taken Sides against it; if it survives it is not because Nature has preferred and chosen it. Each succeeds or fails in its own right, and by its own energies. Its world was not made for it; but yet is made by it, as its activities combine or conflict with the activities of other beings, that environ it. Why The Democrats Are Blue written by Mark Stricherz and has been published by Encounter Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Political Science categories.

Stricherz argues that secular, educated elites, using a commission created at the 1968 convention in Chicago, took the Democratic Party away from working class and religious Democrats. This quiet revolution helps explain why six of the last nine Democratic presidential candidates have lost.
