Hogyan lehetne biztonságosabban használni az LSD-t kutatási, terápiás és önismereti célokra? 1943-ban Albert Hofmann svájci vegyész egy véletlen folytán felismerte az általa megalkotott vegyület hallucinogén potenciálját. A „bajkeverő csodagyereket”, az LSD-t hamarosan széles körben kezdték el használni: a pszichiáterek alkoholista, depressziós és skizofrén betegeket kezeltek vele, végső stádiumban lévő rákos betegek fájdalmát csillapította; a CIA önkéntesek, elítéltek és gyanútlan civilek ezrein kísérletezve kereste az ideális vallatószérumot; a művészek pedig alkotóképességük fokozását remélték tőle. Az 1960-as évek első felében az LSD eljutott a tömegekhez: szakrális drogként és a társadalmat forradalmasító csodaszerként tekintettek rá. A korszak olyan meghatározó alakjai, mint Aldous Huxley, Allen Ginsberg, Ken Kesey, Timothy Leary, John Lennon vagy éppen Steve Jobs kezdték el használni és többnyire dicsőíteni a „savat”. Az LSD és más „csodaszerek” az első magyar nyelvű összefoglalója a nyugati világ tudatmódosító anyagainak napjainkig bezárólag. Lebilincselő eszme- és kultúrtörténeti munka, amely sorra veszi a pszichedelikumok kulturális, társadalmi, pszichológiai és terápiás aspektusait, és megismertet azokkal a messianisztikus várakozásokkal és irracionális félelmekkel, amelyek a pszichedelikumokhoz mind a mai napig kapcsolódnak. Az LSD az egyik legizgalmasabb, legtöbbet ígérő, s egyben legveszélyesebb a pszichoaktív szerek listáján, amelyet rendkívül intenzív hallucinogén hatása tesz egyszerre vonzóvá és ijesztővé. Hiába telt el több mint hét évtized születése óta, a benne rejlő veszélyeket és lehetőségeket még távolról sem térképezte fel a tudomány kellő alapossággal. Ez a kötet fontos előrelépés az LSD és más hallucinogén szerek pszichológiai és társadalmi hatásainak megismerése terén.
