Based on an insider's knowledge of weaponry and of actual Israeli and Egyptian battle strategies, this book examines how two of the strongest regional militaries would likely fight a high intensity war in the Middle East. The book examines how the various factors in play - the battle for air superiority, air-ground bombardment, armor, and infantry collisions - would shape the outcome of the conflict, discussing each factor separately in order to highlight its importance. The analysis draws on previous (mainly Arab-Israeli) conflicts, and also on the author's 20 years of experience in studying and doing research on Israel's national strategy and military doctrine. Fascinating new issues are looked at, such as the demilitarization of the Sinai Peninsula and both armies being largely equipped with US military hardware. How would the lack of military infrastructure in the Peninsula dictate the course of the conflict? What issues of identification and friendly fire would the similarity of equipment bring? The book also examines the variety of confrontations that Israel might face - such as high intensity, hybrid, and low intensity wars - and the corresponding responses and strategies it might choose in defense. This will be essential reading for anyone interested in modern high intensity warfare, the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the possible future of the Middle East. *** 'Eilam presents a very cogent, judicious and compelling analysis of what the future military confrontation between Israel and Egypt in Sinai could look like.' -- Hillel Frisch, Professor of Political and Middle East Studies, Bar-Ilan University [Subject: Israeli studies, Middle East Studies, Military Studies, Politics]

Golani, a historian at the Department of Israeli Studies at the U. of Haifa and a revisionist "new" Israeli historian, uses recently released secret papers to argue that, contrary to conventional wisdom, the 1956 war was not imposed on Israel by its enemies but deliberately sought by Israel in pursuit of other objectives, including the consolidation of the alliance with France, territorial expansion, the overthrow of Gamal Abdel Nasser, and the establishment of a new political order in the Middle East. The Yom Kippur War pitted Israel against Syria in the north and Egypt in the south in October 1973. Caught by surprise and surrounded by enemies, Israel relied on the flexibility and creative thinking of its senior field commanders. After Israeli forces halted the Egyptian troops on the Sinai Peninsula, Major General Ariel Sharon seized the opportunity to counterattack. He split the Egyptian army and cut off its supply lines in a maneuver known as Operation Stouthearted Men. Sharon's audacious, controversial decision defied his superiors and produced a major victory, which many believe helped win the war for Israel. This book is a firsthand account of the Yom Kippur War's most intense engagement by key leaders in Sharon's division.

Scholars of international relations generally consider that under conditions of violent conflict and war, smuggling and trans-border crime are likely to thrive. In contrast, this book argues that in fact it is globalisation and peaceful borders that have enabled transnational illicit flows conducted by violent non-state actors, including transnational criminal organizations, drug trafficking organizations, and terrorist cells, who exploit the looseness and demilitarization of borderlands. Empirically, the book draws on case studies from the Americas, compared with other regions of the world experiencing similar phenomena, including the European Union and Southeast Europe (the Western Balkans), Southern Africa, and Southeast Asia. To explain the phenomenon in itself, the authors examine the type of peaceful borders and regimes involved in each case; how strong each country is in the governance of their borderlands; their political willingness to control their peaceful borders; and the prevailing socio-economic conditions across the borderlands.

Not By Omission written by Amnon Kapeliouk and has been published by Verso Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-07-26 with History categories.

In this book, first published in Hebrew in 1975 and now available in English for the first time with an introduction by Noam Chomsky, Amnon Kapeliouk traces the policies and attitudes that led to the 1973 Arab-Israel war. He describes the multiple diplomatic overtures from Egyptian presidents Nasser and Sadat after 1967 that Israel ignored or contemptuously rejected, as well as the complacent attitude that had become fully entrenched in the Israeli military establishment. On the political level, the triumvirate of Golda Meir, Moshe Dayan and Israel Galili feature prominently as a study in arrogance and incompetence. Kapeliouk also notes the protest movement that arose among active-duty soldiers as well as veterans in the wake of the war demanding political accountability for the failures of the war. Finally, the book examines Israel's policy of colonizing the territories occupied in 1967, starting with the Golan Heights and later spreading to the West Bank ("Judaea and Samaria") and the Sinai - a policy that did much to convince the leaders of Arab states that war was their only option. Introduced by Noam Chomsky and Irene Gendzier.
