As far as Colin Berry's family were concerned, he'd gone to Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban to market low-cost modular housing. The truth was much more complicated. In fact, Berry, a former soldier, had been recruited by British intelligence to secretly buy back weapons systems which had been delivered to the Mujahideen during their struggle against the Soviets. His work involved reconnaissance missions to remote mountain villages where he was able to see first hand the ravaging effects of decades of warfare. Back in Kabul, his attempts to train local men to fight the Taliban came to a horrific end when their mission was compromised and they were massacred before they could reach their target. In February 2003, disillusioned with the work he was doing and concerned for his own security, Berry made preparations to leave the country. He was packing his bags when two armed Afghans showed up at his hotel room. He agreed to a final meeting but by the time it had finished both Afghans were dead and Berry himself was seriously wounded. In The Deniable Agent, Colin Berry gives a riveting insight into the covert world of intelligence. He also finally reveals the truth about what happened in the Intercontinental Hotel that night and how he spent nearly a year in a stinking Afghan jail.

How do you set about training a secret agent? What kind of people were recruited and trained to kill and sabotage so they could be dropped into Nazi occupied territory in World War Two? And what happened to them after their active service was over? The Special Operations Executive (SOE) was a clandestine Allied organisation set up by Winston Churchill in the Second World War to carry out sabotage and encourage resistance behind enemy lines in Europe, the Balkans and the Far East. Warfare of this type was unconventional, solitary and dangerous. By the end of the war, the SOE had recruited and trained more than 9,000 operatives - men and women of multiple nationalities - who were expected to endure, for prolonged periods, conditions of extreme physical and psychological difficulty and threat, where the consequences of failure could be catastrophic.Drawing on pioneering research, sponsored by the Wellcome Trust, among previously untapped sources, ranging from declassified SOE files to psychiatric records and interviews with survivors, The Making of a Secret Agent reveals how the SOE addressed the impact of the psychological stresses to which its operatives were exposed. It unearths the processes by which candidates were selected for clandestine operations, including the contributions of professional psychologists and psychiatrists and the application of pioneering methods of testing and assessment.Through vivid personal testimony of the agents and those who worked with them, this book illuminates the degree to which those processes were effective in identifying people capable of coping and working well in the field. And it reveals for the first time the support forthcoming for SOE operatives who returned from their harrowing missions in enemy territory.

The New Spymasters written by Stephen Grey and has been published by St. Martin's Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-14 with Political Science categories.

The old world of spying-dead-letter boxes, microfilm cameras, an enemy reporting to the Moscow Center, and a hint of sexual blackmail-is history. The spymaster's technique has changed and the enemy has, too. He or she now frequently comes from a culture far removed from Western understanding and is part of a less well-organized group. The new enemy is constantly evolving and prepared to kill the innocent. In the face of this new threat, the spymasters of the world shunned human intelligence as the primary way to glean clandestine information and replaced it with an obsession that focuses on the technical methods of spying ranging from the use of high-definition satellite photography to the global interception of communications. However, this obsession with technology has failed, most spectacularly, with the devastation of the 9/11 attacks. In this searing modern history of espionage, Stephen Grey takes us from the CIA's Cold War legends, to the agents who betrayed the IRA, through to the spooks inside Al-Qaeda and ISIS. Techniques and technologies have evolved, but the old motivations for betrayal-patriotism, greed, revenge, compromise-endure. Based on years of research and interviews with hundreds of secret sources, Stephen Grey's The New Spymasters is an up-to-date exposé that shows how spycraft's human factor is once again being used to combat the world's deadliest enemies.

The Art Of Betrayal written by Gordon Corera and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-08-11 with History categories.

The secret history of MI6 - from the Cold War to the present day. The British Secret Service has been cloaked in secrecy and shrouded in myth since it was created a hundred years ago. Our understanding of what it is to be a spy has been largely defined by the fictional worlds of James Bond and John le Carre. THE ART OF BETRAYAL provides a unique and unprecedented insight into this secret world and the reality that lies behind the fiction. It tells the story of how the secret service has changed since the end of World War II and by focusing on the people and the relationships that lie at the heart of espionage, revealing the danger, the drama, the intrigue, the moral ambiguities and the occasional comedy that comes with working for British intelligence. From the defining period of the early Cold War through to the modern day, MI6 has undergone a dramatic transformation from a gung-ho, amateurish organisation to its modern, no less controversial, incarnation. Gordon Corera reveals the triumphs and disasters along the way. The grand dramas of the Cold War and after - the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the 11 September 2001 attacks and the Iraq war - are the backdrop for the human stories of the individual spies whose stories form the centrepiece of the narrative. But some of the individuals featured here, in turn, helped shape the course of those events. Corera draws on the first-hand accounts of those who have spied, lied and in some cases nearly died in service of the state. They range from the spymasters to the agents they ran to their sworn enemies. Many of these accounts are based on exclusive interviews and access. From Afghanistan to the Congo, from Moscow to the back streets of London, these are the voices of those who have worked on the front line of Britain's secret wars. And the truth is often more remarkable than the fiction.
