Building structures to house the logistical and manufacturing processes of industry is one of the largest and most widespread architectural assignments. The complex functional requirements are often fulfilled by typifies or modular solutions. The organization of industrial processes together with the wide range of designs and building methods are clearly and practically treated in this design atlas. A systematic section presents the typology, the technical and logistical elements of industrial building. In the subsequent section, some 70 designs are described and analysed. Special emphasis is placed on those functions and procedures that inform the design such as production, montage, storage and distribution. Jürgen Adam is Director of the Institute for Design and Construction at the University of Stuttgart. As an architect and teacher he has followed closely developments in international industrial building, as have the contributing authors, among others Gunther Henn, Klaus Daniels and Fritz Haller.

Industrialized open building has the potential to radically cut building costs and construction time. This book focuses on product and production systematics and information systematics, and begins with an extensive survey of the field by the editor. The second part consists of a series of descriptions of the experience of different countries, and chapters on particular themes. The book presents new material developed from Commission W24 of the CIB (the International Council for Building Research Studies and Documentation).

Excerpt from A Treatise on the Design and Construction of Mill Buildings: And Other Industrial Plants This book is the outcome of a smaller one entitled Mill Build ing Construction, written in 1896 and given to the publishers in 1900. These books are based on the personal experience of the writer, covering a period of twenty years in designing and esti mating buildings, bridges and other structural work, and most of their contents is from his private notes and records. A separate part on The Theory of Economic Design was included in the present work because of the large amount of capi tal being invested in manufacturing plants. A knowledge of the possibilities and requirements should precede the design, and it is only by the exercise of such knowledge that the best results are Obtained. The introduction of Part I has caused some repetition, as subjects discussed generally in this part are treated more fully in Parts III and IV on details. The repetition, however, seems necessary for clearness, as the whole contents of one part would be out of place in the other. This is particularly the case in the chapters on framing of northern light and other roofs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
