Excerpt from The Design and Construction of Ships, Vol. 1: Vol; 1. Calculation and Strength This book is the written word of many years of lecturing in Glasgow University. As these lectures have never been written as they were delivered, and as new matter was necessarily added to the lectures as it became available, the chapters of this book do not represent any one systematic series of lectures, though there is little in the book but what has been given at some time to the students. The process of writing such a book is very dissimilar to that of writing most books. Much of it at first was collected from lecture notes by one or other of my assistants. These collections were elaborated, modified, rewritten in parts, and finally corrected in the form in which they now appear. In the collecting and correcting process 1 was continually helped by my assistants and students, but the bulk of the assistance was given me by Mr J. G. Johnstone, B. Sc., to whom I am indebted for saving me a great deal of detail work in the collection of what I have given from time to time in my lectures. Some of the calculations were made by students of the Naval Architecture Class. This book cannot possibly lay any large claim to originality. The greater part is necessarily the work of others who went before or who are now working for the advancement of the science of Naval Architecture. Very little attempt has been made to acknowledge the sources of such help. The subject is too wide to attempt to acknowledge all the sources, oven if one were qualified to do so. But there are parts which arc original work given for the first time in the lecture-room, though some has been already published, mostly in the Transactions of the Institution of Naval Architects. The subject is developing year by year, and often so rapidly as to make it very difficult, if not almost impossible, to read all that is published on the subject. There are further stores of knowledge which are never published, and are only accessible to individuals associated with the shipbuilding establishments, in which much expense is incurred in investigations and experiments for the advancement of knowledge of the subject. Throughout the 19th century, the shipbuilding industry in America was both art and craft, one based on tradition, instinct, hand tools, and handmade ship models. Even as mechanization was introduced, the trade supported a system of apprenticeship, master builders, and family dynasties, and aesthetics remained the basis for design. Spanning the transition from wood to iron shipbuilding in America, Thiesen's history tells how practical and nontheoretical methods of shipbuilding began to be discarded by the 1880s in favor of technical and scientific methods. Perceiving that British warships were superior to its own, the United States Navy set out to adopt British design principles and methods. American shipbuilders wanted only to build better warships, but embracing British practices exposed them to new methods and technologies that aided in the transformation of American shipbuilding into an engineering-based industry. American shipbuilders soon improvised ways to turn U.S. shipyards into state-of-the-art facilities and, by the early 20th century, they forged ahead of the British in construction and production methods. The history of shipbuilding in America is a story of culture dictating technology.
