In recent years, hands-on lean simulation games have been introduced as an effective educational tool. Among them, role-playing simulation games in face-to-face classroom setting are capable of demonstrating effects of lean tools at system's level. Many newly developed games with different lean tools and different settings have been reported in literature. However, literature reveals that there are some limitations (such as ineffective design of the game, fixed number of players, time constraints) that resists the expected outcomes of lean simulation games. Moreover, dynamics of the simulated system was also less discussed in the literature. Without analyzing the system's behavior in advance, simulation games developed by trials might not be able to show the impacts of lean tools effectively or timely, and thus the trainees may not learn the concept in limited amount of time. This thesis investigates the design aspects affecting the efficiency and effectiveness of simulation games. The analysis of design aspects is followed by a framework to guide the effort of development of new designs or evaluation of current game designs. Furthermore, the framework proposed above was demonstrated on selected lean tools and their dynamics of the performance metrics was illustrated. Dynamics of the system actually helps in determining if a lean tool can be demonstrated within a reasonable timeframe or amount of effort. Eventually, this research will support lean educators to develop more effective and efficient hands-on activities for teaching process improvement concepts in the future.

Although you cannot learn about Lean without 'Gemba' experience, games allow the next best thing by fostering a richness of understanding, discussion, participation, and decision making that are essential elements for successful Lean implementation. This book is the second edition of a compendium of participative games to be used by trainers and facilitators to assist them in implementing Lean, Six Sigma and Operational Excellence programs. The book is relevant to both manufacturing and service. A total of 47 games are included, each with full description, player and instructor notes, and game sheets. No special equipment is required other than dice and household items such as scissors. The games range from basic to advanced. Several of the games are arranged in sets, allowing greater in depth exploration of issues. The appendix contains game sheets that are copied and distributed to players. There are approximately 40% more games in this edition, and many of the games in the first edition have been revised and improved.

This book presents a series of high performance product design (PD) and development best practices that can create or improve product development organization. In contrast to other books that focus only on Toyota or other individual companies applying lean IPD, this book explains the lean philosophy more broadly and includes discussions of systems engineering, design for X (DFX), agile development, integrated product development, and project management. The “Lean Journey” proposed here takes a value-centric approach, where the lean principles are applied to PD to allow the tools and methods selected to emerge from observation of the individual characteristics of each enterprise. This means that understanding lean product development (LPD) is not about knowing which tools are available but knowing how to apply the philosophy. The book comes with an accompanying manual with problems and solutions available on Springer Extras.

This final year project is about Lean Production System (LPS) Simulation Game that had been applied at WSA Engineering Sdn Bhd. LPS simulation game is a tool for education and training purpose for the employees at WSA Engineering Sdn Bhd in improving their knowledge in Lean Production System. As LPS will be widely used in Malaysia, so there is need a tool in smoothing the LPS implementation. Before implement this LPS, the industry need to develop the LPS skills among the employees. So this step are taken by WSA Engineering Sdn Bhd by implementing this LPS Simulation Game in their company. Therefore, objectives of this project is to train all of the employees to achieve standard in doing work, follow the standard operation procedure (SOP). Besides, to acquire the skills to build optimal quality in the manufacturing processes, secure required volume and pursue cost reduction. The problem statement of this project is LPS or Kaizen team at WSA Engineering Sdn Bhd had difficulties to implement and develop the LPS knowledge among the employees. For the previous condition, the Production team had been run the training but it is the theory only not expose with the simulation game. Through teory, the the employees not really understand and cannot relate with the real condition at the work environment. Then, WSA LPS team had been setup one simulation games which are Kanban Simulation Game. After running the training, the achievement of the employees is increase which are the percentage of rejection is decrease. So, for the current condition the training had been run but with the difference strategies where the idea of this project is come out, which is lump sum the three simulation game which are Kanban Simulation Game, Majaico Tower Simulation Game and Restaurant Game to become LPS Simulation Game. In order to reinforce the learning process and measure the effectiveness of this game in teaching items of LPS, surveys to test pre-game knowledge and post-game knowledge are administered before and after the game to the WSA employees. So, from this the level of LPS knowledge between pre-training and post-training can be evaluated. Besides, during the simulation game running, each group will be evaluated based on the parameters measured through them. That parameters are shipped quantity, cost per piece, profit and customer satisfaction and through that, they will realized about the relationship between shipped quantity, company profit and customer satisfaction, and for the other side is between processing cost and cost per piece. Through the finding of this project, this simulation game enhanced the learning and understanding of basic concepts of lean because of during the simulation game all of the participants have been exposed with all of the LPS items.

Aside from the human and managerial skills necessary to propel any business, the right Lean deployment can play a big role in reducing waste and maximizing efficiency. Capturing these benefits is highly dependent on adequate Lean techniques integration. One of the major hurdles companies face is the difficulty to choose the Lean tools that best fit their contexts and that are best tailored towards reaching their objectives. In this study, we proposed an HLA based Co-Simulation framework with a Java-based digital platform to allow different federates (discrete event simulations), representing the operational Lean tools, running simultaneously in parallel. Time management mechanisms of HLA are required for regulating the advancement of the federates during the simulation run. An example of an Aeronautic company is used to demonstrate the usefulness of this co-simulation framework. Six Lean configuration models are investigated under market fluctuation, demand diversification, and uncertainty of resources contexts compared with an actual model simulated as a Lean free scenario.

"Global competition and customer demands are pressing modern industry operations to become leaner. The race among the global corporations to "go lean" demands engineers with an in-depth understanding of lean philosophies. An overview of current methods for teaching lean shows that they include small scale hands-on projects, presentations, and guest lectures. There is a need to incorporate a more immersive virtual simulation to further inspire students. Many lean simulation games are available in the market; however, they lack simplicity, ability to store the results, and modeling power. The goal of this research is to develop a virtual simulation platform, enabling students to perform various experiments by applying lean concepts, while addressing the above-mentioned difficulties. Assignments addressing the implementation of various lean tools are developed as a mode of utilizing the virtual simulation model in a lean course. In order to make the simulation more interesting, attractive, and learner friendly, the VE-Suite design includes user-friendly dialogue boxes, graphical models of machines, and an editable layout. The simulation platform enables students to implement various lean concepts such as just-in-time (JIT), standard work, takt time, single minute exchange of dies (SMED), kaizen, kanban, and U-layout by modifying the process parameters such as process times, setup times, layout, and demand rates. The simulation starts with a traditional push type mass production line consisting four work stations. The students interact with the production line and apply lean tools to improve it. By providing a more immersive learning experience for the students the research hopes to improve understanding and retention of lean concepts"--Abstract, leaf iii.
