'In the last decade trade costs have been a subject of intense study in the international trade literature. Richard Pomfret and Patricia Sourdin provide a timely and accessible summary of what we know so far. Their comprehensive review of what we have learned is paired here with important new research in the area of trade facilitation. This is important reading for policymakers interested in international trade and trade-related economic development.' Russell Hillberry, University of Melbourne, Australia 'Few topics are as important in international economics as trade costs. Surprisingly, there are few studies that explicitly address that issue in detail. This makes the book of great value to both professional economists and policy makers worldwide helping them to understand the different concepts of trade costs, their determinants and how to reduce them using trade facilitation measures. The book is very well written and a must read for any person that has an interest in trade costs!' Matthias Busse, Ruhr-University of Bochum, Germany This up-to-date and informative book provides a comprehensive treatment of the costs of trading across borders and of trade facilitation policies. While traditional tariff and non-tariff barriers to trade have been reduced, international trade continues to involve higher costs in money and time than domestic trade. These include not only transport costs, that are determined by distance and commodity characteristics, but also at-the-border and behind-the-border costs which can be reduced by appropriate policies. Research on trade costs has flourished since the turn of the century, and this book by Patricia Sourdin and Richard Pomfret, takes stock of our increased knowledge of the nature and magnitude of trade costs, analysing why they are high and how they can be reduced to increase the gains from trade. Trade Facilitation will appeal to economists and policymakers at the national level and in multinational institutions, researchers and postgraduate students interested in international trade and trade policy, as well as students in international business.

This book focuses on the development of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia based on various primary and secondary field surveys. In doing so, the book provides a regional comparison of countries in Asia- Pacific, covering issues such as employment generation, formation of gross domestic product (GDP), export development, development constraints, productivity, and investment. To achieve this, the book analyzes the role of partnerships between MSMEs such as large companies, banks and government institutions, and the role of cooperatives. It also includes studies on women’s entrepreneurship in Indonesia, and also explores the crisis mitigating measures (CMMs) widely adopted by MSMEs affected by financial crises in the past. Finally, the book also examines the development of financial technology (FinTech), and in particular peer-to-peer (P2P) lending and how this can serve as an alternative source of funding for MSMEs in Indonesia. Aspects of this book would be useful to students, researchers, practitioners, and also those interested in economic-related sustainable development goals (SDGs), given the importance the United Nations (UN) has assigned to MSMEs for taking a lead in employment creation, and poverty eradication.

The report reviews trade facilitation progress in Asia and the Pacific and explores how technology can help bridge trade finance gaps. Trade facilitation initiatives can make an important contribution to economic growth and poverty reduction by lowering trade costs and increasing trade flows. This report reviews trade facilitation progress in the region, including recent trends in paperless trade and transit facilitation and the impact of trade facilitation initiatives on trade costs. It also features a special chapter on how trade finance gaps--especially prevalent for small and medium-sized enterprises--can be bridged by technology, and the supporting policies and actions required to make this happen.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Trade and Distribution, grade: 1, National University of Science & Technology Zimbabwe (National University of Sciences and Techology), course: BACHELOR OF COMMERCE (HONOURS) DEGREE IN FISCAL STUDIES, language: English, abstract: The research was aimed to establish the impact of customs modernisation on trade facilitation initiatives implemented by ZIMRA and the relationship between modernisation of customs procedures and economic growth as well as the challenges being faced by the Customs Administration in its objective. The research seeks to answer the following questions: To what extent does the economic environment have any bearing on the modernisation procedures in Customs Administration? How relevant is the Customs legislation in support of modernisation of customs trade facilitation initiatives? Has ZIMRA achieve its intended goals towards embarking on modernizing its Customs operations? What is the impact on various stakeholders, for instance, importers, exporters and the Zimbabwean government? What are the benefits and costs of trade facilitation? What is the relationship between trade facilitation and economic development? The implementation of customs reforms is a topical issue in the customs modernisation field to the extent that the donor community has been funding the projects in many developing countries. However, the greatest challenge is on to the extent to which they affect trade facilitation initiatives. Modernisation of trade facilitation initiatives has been described as the key to sustainable economic development and thus a poverty reduction tool. Zimbabwe has not been seen to be much committed to trade facilitation, instead, it has been characterised by cumbersome and complicated trade procedures, which have worked against trade facilitation in most third world countries. Some of the modernisation initiatives proposed are not being fully utilised. Thus the researcher seeks to evaluate the consequences of those initiatives if implemented in the Customs Administration. Zimbabwe’s economy is backed up by trade with other countries and is also used as a transiting country which links trade between various other countries.

Trade integration contributes substantially to economic development and poverty alleviation. In recent years much progress was made to liberalize the trade regime, but customs procedures are often still complex, costly and non-transparent. This situation leads to misallocation of resources. 'Customs Modernization Handbook' provides an overview of the key elements of a successful customs modernization strategy and draws lessons from a number of successful customs reforms as well as from customs reform projects that have been undertaken by the World Bank. It describes a number of key import procedures, that have proved particularly troublesome for customs administrations and traders, and provides practical guidelines to enhance their efficiency. The Handbook also reviews the appropriate legal framework for customs operations as well as strategies to combat corruption.

Industrial Development Of Taiwan written by Gee San and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-04-19 with Business & Economics categories.

Before the arrival of the twenty-first century, Taiwan was widely regarded as a successful model of a country which had not only transformed herself from an underdeveloped economy into a high-tech industrialised island, but had also undergone a revolution from an authoritarian regime to a democratic one. Taiwan is now experiencing a significant economic slowdown and facing multifaceted challenges including low productivity, stagnant innovation culture of small and medium-sized enterprises, ageing population, sustainable energy mix, pension reform, upgrading of human resources, devising competition policy to provide incentives for innovation as well as to limit abuses from monopolies, warding off competition from countries with lower labour cost and managing complicated cross-Strait relationship with China. The edited book looks at Taiwan’s past successful development model, summarises Taiwan’s current situation, outlines the future challenges beyond the year 2020 and provides policy recommendations in the aforementioned aspects. The contributors of this volume are accomplished veteran scholars in the fields. Several of them used to be policy-makers at the level of ministers or deputy ministers. The book offers not only academic contribution but policy-relevant insights.
