Excerpt from The Development of American Nationality The authors hope that this "Short History of the American People" may serve the purposes of two classes of readers. They have aimed, in the first instance, to provide for college undergraduates pursuing an introductory course in American history, a general manual which will embody, in some measure at least, the enlarged knowledge and the new points of view made possible by the results of research in recent years. They believe also that this history will meet the requirements of the general reader who desires a comprehensive view of the subject within reasonable compass. For the student and the general reader alike, it is hoped that the bibliographical notes may point the way to more extended studies. The aim of the authors is not so much to present a balanced narrative of events, as to describe those movements and forces which have left their permanent impress upon the national character and institutions. The first volume (The Foundations of American Nationality, 1492 to 1789) deals with the molding of the varied European nationalities and the several detached colonies into an independent and united nation; the second (The Development of American Nationality, 1783 to the Present Time) deals with the development of the nation so formed. While any division of the subject matter of history occasions perplexity and disagreement, the authors believe that the character of the problems confronting the people of the time, and the character of the materials which the historian must employ, permanently differentiate the colonial period from the national, and that the two can best be treated by different men. In order, however, that each author might have full liberty to express his views, the volumes overlap for the period 1783 to 1789. Excerpt from The History of North America It has been the constant aim of the author to preserve a careful impartiality in dealing with matters of difference of view, and to give no judgment for which he has not been able to offer a sanctioning fact for its source. The men of those times were, like the men of the present, serious and in the main sincere, and faced complex problems for whose solutions they could not furnish the needed wisdom. The new day which Jefferson introduced, and to which Madison fell heir, was indeed unique. While it grew out of the old and was organically part of the early life of the nation, it was very properly regarded by many as in a true sense another era. The story of the period might well be entitled: How democracy interpreted nationality. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Canadian Nationality: Its Growth and Development We take the day of Confederation as the period when there appeared as a living power in America, a Canadian National sentiment. Prior to that event, the feeling of attachment to the individual provinces had been of the most feeble nature, excepting among the French and the United Empire Loyalists. It was not choice that brought most of the old countrymen to British America. Going to a colony was regarded as going into exile, and, mainly, they remained in the colonies because they could not help themselves, or with the view of acquiring means whereby to live in comfort at home, in civilized Europe I' The life, then, of the individual British American Colonies may be regarded as a period of incubation, which resulted in the production of the Dominion of Canada. Excerpt from The Story of the American Indian: His Origin, Development, Decline and Destiny The popular opinion of the American Indian has for generations been based upon prejudice and ignorance as thoughtless as it is unreasoning and unjust. The red man Of America may be no saint, but he is at least a man and should not be condemned unheard. He has his Side of the story quite as much as has his white conqueror. Excerpt from Causes and Effects in American History: The Story of the Origin and Development of the Nation Few things are drier or duller than the bare facts of his tory. Few things are more interesting than the reasons why great events happened as they did and why the con sequences of these happenings were what they were. Few things are more difficult than to prevent a multiplicity of details from crowding into an historical picture and from obscuring what is essential, significant, important. This narrative ignores details. It deals not so much with facts as with causes and effects - with the large cur rents of thought, feeling, and action which from generation to generation, especially through the economic and intel lectual influences of each period, have modified and shaped the destinies of the American people. The purpose of the book is thus to supply to the imagination a key to the real meaning of the evolutions, often complex and apparently confusing, of the historical pageant as it passes across the stage. Excerpt from The Italian in America The design of "The Italian in America" is to present clearly the contribution of Italy to American development and citizenship. The work is one of a series reviewing the influx of the various racial strains and nationalities that are making up the composite American. The authors have in view simply the recital of facts for impartial consideration, for no concern of this country is more momentous and urgent than the national dealing with the problems of immigration, congestion, distribution and education for American standards of living and citizenship. To exclude what is essentially bad or unfusible from any source - to welcome and utilize what is essentially good and helpful, even if yet imperfectly developed, is in the judgment of the authors the true American policy. Excerpt from American Citizenship: Yale Lectures In May, 1900, Honorable William E. Dodge, of New York, made provision for lectures before the students of Yale University, to be known as the "Yale Lectures on the Responsibilities of Citizenship" and to be on a "topic whose understanding will contribute to the formation of an intelligent public sentiment, of high standards of the duty of a Christian citizen, and of habits of action to give effect to these sentiments and these standards." Having been honored by selection to deliver the first course of these lectures I have felt that it was fitting to present a few plain, simple, commonplace truths in respect to those responsibilities, thus laying, as it were, a foundation upon which succeeding lecturers might in a more ambitious way develop some particular form of responsibility, or some particular appeal to noble action. With this in view I have prepared the following lectures. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
